Subject: The last Sloop Session Barton, UK
From: Oaklet
Date: 20 Jul 03 - 06:20 PM

Just thought I'd post and reflect upon the end of a weekly session that I first attended in 1996, with a violin that I couln't play, listening to tunes I'd never heard.

The Sloop session is moving somewhere else and this coming Tuesday is the last for North Lincolnshire's best-wired boozer with the toilets from hell. Good luck to the Sloop. Sessions are often bigger than the pubs they inhabit, but in this case - I'm not so sure.

I feel been very fortunate to have had this on my doorstep and wondered if the last one could be a kind of lively and well - attended affair. Bulk in the Corner will lavishly accommodate anyone from outside the Barton area. There is a cash machine in Barton that dispenses fivers, only twice the amount needed to secure a pint of Sloop Guinness.

Anyone got like me, fond memories of Tusedays in Waterside Road?

My first experience, and therefore second last, was only last week and what a brilliant session it was. Wonderful musicians who could play along to the tunes I know and another smallpiper as well!

See you all tomorrow night and hope another venue gets sorted out.

As recent white settlers we will miss our Tuesdays amongst nice people who have made us very welcome to our new home I hope a new venue is found asap and look foward to the big send off. Thanks to the attendance last Friday. C.T.

I shall attempt to attend the send off, but this is possibly unlikely as Mrs Rachel DeMister will be celebrating her birthday! If not, hope its a good'un.

The worst of the bad music is really, really bad, but the good stuff soars. ETV heard an example - Rural Sex in full flight the week before last.

Gee is the landlord of the nearby Queens pub (Tetleys £1.65!, Guiness £2.20?) The Queens is a possible alternative venue. Gee told me he would attend the Sloop session on Tuesday. I hearby command you all to wear relatively unstained attire to impress- I'm thinking particularly of Oaklet here. I shall be in an ensemble borrowed from that bloke who joined in a royal do recently.

Sorry I shall miss tomorrow night's farewell as I'm away. Just like to say a big thanks to everyone for the warm welcome though - Sloop is the first and only session I have attended in England, and your encouragement to a bit of a newbie has meant a lot.I'm not in contact with anyone offline,(my email addy is amergin@lineone.net) but will check Mudcat for news of a new venue -best of luck with this..

Of course I'll be there, God willing, I do think it's a pity when a new landlord who only a month or so before had said he would support the session then makes a volte face like this. Oh well, let's all get there and make him see how good a session can be - then we can start looking for another venue. But is IS a good room, pity about the toilets. And the new man may well make even those more salubrious....

If he so much as waves a Toilet Duck at those wonderfully scuzzy, fetid, malodourous cottaging booths, he'll have me and Skip to answer to and make no mistake.

I thought about the great folks that I met in the Sloop over the years and the wonderful bloke that I eventually married, and came over a bit wistful about the place.

I still have a bag of music, given to me by Ayatollah on my second visit way back when. And I remember when all this was just fields. And nobody used to lock their doors etc.

I'll drink to that, Smellypooper but I might bring my own bottle of advocaat, hidden in a moist, fleshy crevice to avoid the abitious pricing policy of the licenced bandit in the stained thong.

Long live the Sloop. Bring digital cameras to record the event and to clog-up the Mudcat with images that won't mean anything to anyone who hasn't had to use the Sloop toilets and during the breathless and tearful encounter, has pictured themselves momentarily riding shotgun on a Greek cesspool tanker. In August.

Americans - best use Schipol (Amsterdam) and get a connecting Air UK/KLM service to Humberside International. There is a bus service to Barton and Hull9 on the hour from the terminal.

I'd advise you to use the toilets at the terminal.

And Bulk in the Corner, It might have been the re-wiring that lead to his volte face. I have just sawn through my chair.

This is sad. Been great times there. I hope the new landlord, if its his fault, poisons the woman from North Lincs Council with his new pub grub, if he sells it.

Queens sounds ok. John Bennet knows of a pub up the road with a licence. Can't remember its name but its near him- former club I think

For anybody who's interested, Sunday 3rd of August will be the 60th First Sunday of the Month Session/Singaround at the Sun Inn in Beverley. I started this session five years ago at Nellies following the Festival, with a view to continuing the Festival feel once a month throughout the year. It is, I believe, the best attended afternoon of song, music, and beer for many miles around, and has been visited by people from all over the UK.

It has been successful in it's aim, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it, indeed I'm very proud of it. I have decided that after the next one, I am retiring as m/c, to hand the mantle over to somebody else to keep it live for the next five years. I have suggested ossonflags, and he would be proud to, though we will discuss this with everybody who attends the next session.

I would be extremely happy and chuffed if my last afternoon as the gaffer could be attended by as many of you as possible to make it a memorable occasion. I have met many fine singers and musicians in the past at this session, indeed made many long lasting friends. I hope to see you there. Perhaps the McPhat Boy himself may fancy an appearance?

The session, as always, will commence at 2pm till about 6/7pm.

Keep the Music playing, my friends.

Pete.

Just out of curiosity, what happened?

It sounded quite hopeful when Greg made this post at the start of the month. (Although personally, I never trust new landlords and "things will be the same..." - It happend to us fairly recently - after a few weeks and our notice was on the night - "can you make this your last night please"...)

However, Sloopers suffering session withdrawal can come and drown their woes in porter and dirges at the Six Bells, in Barrow, tomorrow (Sunday 27th July 2003), so that's allright.
