Oh, and wasn't that a great film. Rita Tushingham, A Taste of Honey...that's the first time I heard that song and I've had a soft spot in my heart for it ever since...

Mudlark - Us two, too. And then we had the fun of moving to Scotland and easily picking up the words and having a baby.

It made an excellent walking-the-baby song. Of course, along with "Sha Shtil," and a few murder ballads and a 'dead baby' song or two.

Does anyone else remember playing the childrens game associated with the song?

Click on Sorcha's link above, Emma ... it will take you to a previous discussion with some reminiscences of playing the 'wall game' to this song.

Nicest suggestion I ever heard is that it is inspired by the Manchester Ship Canal - big ships gliding up past little back-to-back houses well away from any ocean. Likely not true, but it's a pleasing idea.

Thanks for that Big Pink - it took years off my life reliving the game and In and out the dusty bluebells. It also reminds me why I was always covered in grazes and bandages on childhood photos
