Subject: SHIVERS IN ASHEVILLE 8/1-8/15 JAM!
From: Fortunato
Date: 21 Jul 03 - 08:20 PM

Susette and I are packing up the guitars and banjo and auto harp and travelling to Black Mountain just outside of Asheville, NC on August first through the 15th. We're renting a house in the area with a great picking porch. Our intent is to play music 18 hours a day with all the pickers we can find. We know we'll go to the Mountain and Dance Festival on the 2nd to catch David Holt and others, and we'll try to make the most of the list of jams on the various nights and, of course, the Shindig on the Green.

But the greatest pleasure would be to encounter Mudcatters and friends to jam with.

If you live or will be in that area and would enjoy a jam or just hanging out and talking about music, please let us know.

Just pm me a day or so ahead of time and I will introduce you to the Folks at Blue Ridge Music in Asheville. This is a great place to meet pickers, amatuer and Pro., and great folks to know. Jim

Fortunato,

Sure wish your timing was a little different -- I've got a house in Montreat (2 miles north of Black Mountain), but we won't be there till mid October. You should be able to find a lot of pickers around there, though. Check out the Swannanoa Gathering at Warren Wilson College. Also check on the Sourwood Festival. Not sure if it's still on or, if so, when. There are bunches of music venues around and I'm sure Jeep man can give you some guidance, but you might want to check out a Web site maintained by the Mountain Acoustic Music Association at http://ncmama.org/.

Hope you find good picking.

cheers

david

Oh, BTW -- there's a place in Asheville called Jack of the Wood where there's usually good music. Also look up The Grey Eagle and check out what's going on in the Black Mountain Concert Hall (or whatever it's called now). It's just up the hill and around back from the Song of the Wood shop.

Hi Fortunato

Jack of the Wood Oldtime session is Wednesday night from about 9pm. Depending on who's in town you might find John Herrmann & Meredith McIntosh, Rayna Gellert, David Lynch, Cary Fridley, Trevor & Travis Stuart.... Best beer in the world and invariably worth my 7000 miles round trip whenever I take my holidays there. You MUST try their Porter.

Black Mtn is a neat little place. Check out the music shop which is just off the crossroads in the centre (turn north by the Exxon gas station and it's almost immediately left behind the thrift shop. There's also the aforementioned Song of the Wood on the main street which is mainly dulcimers. There's a good coffee shop just past it on the way to Asheville but the name escapes me.

Blue Ridge Music is (I think) on the Hendersonville Road just past Biltmore (a few miles south of Asheville and on the left hand side by a small mall). They're mainly but not totally Bluegrass and very friendly although I've only been in the shop chatting and not to the session.

Local events... try the local free paper Mountain Express - web page (from memory) www.mountainx.com

Have a great time and wish we hadn't used up all our holiday this year. Still it was in Asheville and we are saving up for the next one...

Nick & Claire

Oh and while you're in Asheville check out Pypers Place a great cafe on Montford Ave about 1/2 mile north of centre (just over the bridge past the chamber of Commerce tourist info place. They do a mean cheesecake!

And Beanstreets (within sight of Pack Place) is good for breakfast - or anything really!

Happy days. If I win the Lottery I can emigrate....

Check these folks out while you're there. I went to a Dan Gellert workshop there and found them to be a good bunch of people.

Here's another one! If you get over to Brevard, head straight for Lo & Mary Gordon's shop, home of Cedar Mountain Banjos. They have a great store and Lo is the creator of some of the finest banjos on earth.
Brevard is a beautiful old town and well worth the short drive from Ashville.

Jeepman, Thanks, will do. Sounds good.

Kudzuman, we ain't scared pm me how to contact you and we'll try to meet up.

ddw, thanks, sorry you won't be in town. Swananoa will just have finished but the Sourwood will be on, and I'll try the website you suggest, thanks. We'll certainly make the Jack of the woods session.

nickp, thanks for all the good info. I love a good pint as well, and you persuaded me, we won't miss it. Hope you win the lottery.

Best regards, Chance

Thanks, Chip, I had found the first through Blue Ridge trails, I think we might make it down. The second was news and interesting.
There seems to be no lack of the music down that way, but then that's why we're going!

Yeah - Acoustic Corner is the Black Mtn shop I was thinking of.

And if you're into contradance then there's Monday at the Grey Eagle and Thursday at the Old Farmers Ball, Warren Wilson College as here

grey eagle & OFB contras

Lo & Mary have a Tuesday evening jam in the shop at Brevard - I think from either 7 or 7:30 to about 9. It's a bit out of your way but if you're out for the day... There's a pretty reasonable Mexican place to eat about 100 yards down the road on the opposite side. Say hi to Lo & Mary for us if you get there.

Hello!

If you're taking 85 and 40 to the mountains, you have to almost go past our door in Hillsborough, NC! Hope you'll at least stop in for lunch.

You know we've got this restaurant going, and we have a little music on Friday nights. Except, somehow, for the Friday August 1! Would you guys be interested in playing here that night? Small place, low key, good fun, food and drinks.

PM for details in any case if your route takes you this way: we'd love to have you stop by for a hello or for the night.

Dani

Dani, that's a wonderful invitation. Thank you very much. I'm going to talk to Susette about it today, but we're headed first to North Ga to visit relatives and then to Black Mountain on the first. We had planned to take 81 for most of the trip down. We'd be 3 or 4 hours from you in the afternoon of August 1. I'll PM you about it. Thanks again, I hate to miss the opportunity to meet you and play in your place. Cheers, Chance

susette is painting a portrait of our youngest on the porch and I'm playing scales (the fish comes later). The house sits well above the Broad River, just a wide stream, really, surrounded by butterflys, mountain laurel and rhododendron. Mountains on all sides, the front porch is just right for pickin' the old time tunes and we've begun...

tonight we head for Asheville and the Mountain Dance and Folk Festival, David Holt is playing, we've got two extra tickets...

I've called Jeepman, left a message.

ddw, I saw the sign for Montreat. I'm sorry you're not here as well.
Maybe next year, eh? I'd love to see your house.

We saw bunches of great folks at the Festival. David Holt is a favorite of ours since the Legacy album with Doc Watson, and he did not disappoint. Great young bluegrass/acoustic group, Josh Goforth Band, and I was very touched by the Oakley Elementary Belles & Beaus, a great bunch of clogging youngsters, wonderful to see the children, black and white, dancing hand in hand.

Asheville seems to be full of post/neo hippies, I haven't seen that many insense selling shops since '72, or maybe I just chanced on a hotbed of tie-dye.

Cloudy this morning down here in the hollow by the rapids, and the last rhododendren blooms are fading...

Well, Susette's painting on the porch and I'm fixing to change the wires on the Gallagher. There's a jam session over in Black Mountain tonight, called the "Green Acres" jam.

Jeepman just called and gave us some music/connection advice, we hope to get together with him sometime before we head for home.

Thunder is rolling down the hollows and the Broad River is settling down after yesterday's rain.

We had company yesterday, Miss Erline who lives up on the hill. Born and raised within five miles of our house, which she once lived in. Tall and rangy, white haired but straight as pine tree, she was a nurse in these mountains before she retired. She had coffee with us and told us the story of this hollow where she's lived all her life...
