Subject: Origins: Number Eight
From: GUEST,David Neale

The lyrics go something like this:

Here before me
My plain soul
Here in my hands
The money that keeps it playing (possibly "The money that makes it play)

Well, I play these numbers
When i feel blue
Oh yes, at times when I, I am blue.

and it goes on to link "Number eight" with ages 29, 23, 17...

Probably recorded in the 1950s, but by whom, or at least, who wrote it?

Possible titles: Number Eight or Number Eight (On the Jukebox)

Diolch yn fawr!

Hmm ... 23 and the 11th, 10th and 7th prime, but not the 8th (if you don't count 1). Is ther some mathematical -- or numerological -- significance here? Don't recognise the song though ...

Steve

Number Eight
(unknown)
Here before me...
My plain soul,
Here in my hands
I hold the money that makes it play.

Well, I play these numbers, when I feel blue
Oh, yes at times.. when I, I am blue

Number Eight, twenty-nine,
She's gone, no she's mine
Number Eight, twenty-three,
To my heart she'll hold the key

Number Eight, seventeen,
Darlin' you, you are my queen
Oh yes at times when I, I feel blue

Number Eight, twenty-nine,
She's gone, no she's mine
Number Eight, twenty-three,
To my heart she'll hold the key

What hurts most of all,
Number Eight, twenty-two,
Where it says, Darlin' I love you

(falsetto) I Love...

Strange, when I posted my original query, I had set it to Origins and now it's set to Lyrics Required!

I don't need the lyrics -- I had already located the angelfire link with the purported lyrics (they don't exactly match the very unclear recording that is available by Elvis)!

I want to know who first recorded the song, or who wrote it.

It seems that Elvis recorded it in 1959. Not finding much else.

That's about correct, though it was not an official recording, merely a home-made tape recording during his stay in Germany. The song, however, sounds as if it had some potential. I'd like to find more about it, so that I can provide additional information in my Elvis Presley, The Originals site. (Many of the readers of this forum should find something of interest in the site, incidentally, so don't necessarily be put off by the Elvis link!)

I'd also like to see if I can get a studio recording of the song by the original artist.

BMI says that "Number Eight" was written by Joshua Free, and the publisher is A D Records:

A D Records
703 Bridewell Street
Los Angeles, CA 90042
Phone: (818) 731-4261
Fax: (213) 255-4516

Before you publish this information, though, I think you should get some confirmation that it's the same song. It's not uncommon for 2 or more songs to have the same title.
