I, too, have always loved this song. Figured it out years ago but had forgotten it. SO, I revisited things. I don't have a guitar with me, so it might be in E but this is what I hear: The pedal note is D with a partial chord alternating between D7sus and D7 ("baby's calling me home...")then it goes to G7 with a little lick ("did you see her crying") to Bm7 ("my baby knows I'm dying"), ("so she keeps on") Em7, A7 ("calling me...") back to the pedal D ("...home"). See if that gets you in the ballpark

i agree with "dropped D", but prefer the following 2 main chords, though they are perhaps harder to finger than those listed above:

D9sus4: 055530
D9: 054530

that sounds right to me.

then the other main chords are:
G6: 5x5430
Bm7: x24232
Em: 222000
A: x02220

and in the coda:
F#m: 444222
Bsus4: x2445x
B: x2444(x or 2)

Interesting seeing the chords for "Baby's Callin' Me Home" in the key of D.
I guess my record player ran fast, as I always play this tune in E.

First chord is 0-7-7-7-0-0   then 0-7-6-7-0-0
Next, comes the run up on the Asus-A7 chord
Run= E-E-G-A Asus A7
Then try C#min7 (quick change to a G6) Then comes F#min B9 and that takes you back around to the Esus-E

At the end when you play the F#min to B9, go up to G#min C#7 then F3min B9 and play the Esus E till you end.

Works for me, love the tune.

Try playing the D minor sus 4: 5-X-5-5-3-X, fingered like an A minor 11, droning that 5th string A note, instead of dropping the E string down to D. The next chord would be played: 5-X-4-5-3-X. In this case you're still playing D7sus4 to D7, but with an A in the bass, and the alternating sus 4 and major third notes (G to F#) an octave lower than playing them on the high E string. Then play the G7 chord Freddie Green style: 3-X-3-4-X-X (actually, you "sus" that as well by playing 3-X-3-5-X-X, then dropping to the G7.) The next D7sus4 sounds good playing in "A" form 5th position (X-5-7-5-9-X. hen drop the "sus" note from fret nine to the major third at fret 8) Next comes E minor, which can be E minor 7 played X-7-5-7-5-X, dropping to A7: X-7-5-6-5-X. Back to the top. For a jazzy John Scofield-style turnaround, hit that A7 for one beat, then play B-flat add 9 and C add 9: 6-X-8-7-6-8, then: 8-X-10-9-8-10, back to the top. Those same add 9 chord forms work if you ply them a major 4th down, too, at the first and third frets.

It really isn't amazing, Mudlark--the truth is that in the 40 odd years I have been hammering away at the guitar, I've stumbled through progressions like that so many times that they've finally sunk in--

Technology deserves some credit here--I found an MP3 of the tune, using Limewire,(I have it, somewhere, on vinyl, but my turntable needs to be fixed, and I don't have any idea which of the twenty five boxes records it is in anyway) which is better than vinyl because you can stop and replay between any two points simply and quickly and, for some reason, it is easier to play along with a music file played on the computer than to anything played thru the stereo anyway--so it was easy to refresh my mind on how this old piece went--

Anyway, I am really pleased that my explanation was enough to get you up and running on this--

Well--first off, the pounding bass note is a D--the thing that is confusing is that this tune is played in D down tuning, which is to say, the low E string is lowered to a D, and then pounded unremittingly for the whole tune--The chords are simple--

First) it starts on a D sus4(which is a D chord with the pinky holding down the G string--O-O-O-2-3-3)

Second) and then falls back to a D-- O-O-O-2-3-2--it does this over and over and over and over, till it gets to the single note passage,

Third)which is really an arpegiated D7 chord--D-D-F#-A-C(I played it starting with the D on the fifth fret of the A string, then to the F# on the fourth fret of the D string, then to the C on the fourth fret of the G string)

Fourth) followed with a G chord

Fifth)to that far out sounding chord which is really just a most of a G9 chord O-O-9-10-10-10

Sixth) it comes round to a plain old Em, a plain old A7, and back to the Dsus/D business.

At the end of the last verse, after it goes from Em to A7 instead of going right to the D business, it goes F#m/Bm/Em/A7 twice before it goes back to the D thing--

Before I forget, the D thing is four counts of Dsus4m followed by 4 counts of D--

I once saw Joachim Young and his band do the D thing for all of 20 minutes, while different people did solos--amazing that you can actually get payed good money to do something that easy, but....

Yes, I know what you mean about the subtle changes. Since I don't play guitar, and it's kind of easy fudging chords on the celtic harp, but also difficult to do any really unusual chords, I'm not much help. I keep on hoping that a guitar playing Mudcatter will stumble in here and help.

yes that's the one - as you can hear there's the same root note pounding away but there are subtle chord changes over the top of it. It gets even harder to fathom out as it gets further on "hate to see her cryin' baby knows I'm dyin' ..." It's off Steve Miller's first album "Children Of The Future"

A Mudcatter called pavane has a computer programme called Harmony I think, which can detect chords in a track taken from a CD. Maybe that is your next best option.

Which Steve Miller album is it on? I think my hubby has (in his huge collection of CD's) both a Boz Scaggs and at least one Steve Miller but without trawling through the boxes I am not sure which ones he has.

Is there a music newsgroup that specialises in this type of music? Part of the problem is that this is a folk and blues site so we are less likely (although not totally impossible) to be playing the song you are after.

Try the OLGA site and see if there is a link to a relevant group or site, or maybe you can contact them and ask them directly for leads on finding the answer.

Yeah - the lyric is Ok but there is a very subtle chord arrangement using a repeated root bass note - it's driving me crazy!!!

I must dig out my old vinyl album and actually play it - but it's in the loft or somewhere - I thought some brainy mudcatter would leap to my assistance.
