Recently, Thalia, the muse of comedy, decide it would be a hoot too hijack my brain.

A few days ago, she implanted the seed idea of scrambling the melody to "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star".

Yesterday, she whispered: "It's the tune to the alphabet, too, you know -- scramble the letters! Scramble the letters!"

So help me, this is the result:

Glad you like it, guys!

The hardest part was picking the four letters that would substitute for "L-M-N-O", since in order to scan, they practically have to be sung as one word.

In the end (after three or four attempts that produced completely unpronouncable tongue-twisters), I picked letter pairs that, when said together, sound very much like common words: "Cagey, Busy, F-in'! Airy." ;-)

It was fun to write. I like Thalia! She's my friend!

Yes. I intended the song to scan the same way... I even entertaind the idea of writing more verses, where the letter order, and tune "morphs" back to normal, so that the final verse is the Abc's we recognize. But then I decided to leave well enough alone... ;-)

So what other muses are you on a first name basis with, and what are their specialties?

Well, I'd like to think I'm familiar with all of them, but I really only know Urania (the muse of science and astronomy) in the "Hi, Howya doin'?" sort of way -- she's the youngest of the sisters.

Their birth orders and specialities are as follows, from eldest to youngest:

Calliope -- Epic poetry (don't really know her very well, except through reading the works of her students)

Euterpe -- Music and Lyric poetry (I've gotten to know her better since hanging out here on Mudcat -- I suspect she was in cahoots with Thalia... not much you can do, when muses gang up on ya'!)

Erato -- Love poetry (I haven't had as many opportunities to get to know her as well as I'd like.)

Polyhymnia -- Sacred song and religious poetry (I've worked on a few projects with her)

Clio -- History (again, I've worked with her on occassion, but I know her best through the works of her students)

Melpomene -- Tragedy (I can't say I've worked with her on a whole project, all the way through, but she has advised me on how to temper a good story and make it better)

Thalia -- Comedy (she and I hang out a lot!)

Terpsechore -- Choral song and dance (I've enjoyed her work on Broadway)

And finally: Urania -- Astronomy (She and I rarely cross paths)

I just had a thought this morning: since this is an Alphabet Song (of sorts), and therefore potentially children's fare. I've decided that the letter pair of F-N is a little too off-color for comfort.

If it were essential to the integrity of the song, I would leave it alone. But it's not.

Switching the X and the N keeps the scansion in working order, and avoids the perception of deleted expletives. So the first two lines should now read:

H O N Double-U A
K G B Z, F X R E J

Um, when I said that I didn't know how to use the abc version, what I really meant is that I'm too technophobic to try. But I did try, and was able to hear the tune.

But I still like it better with the real tune. I can picture singing it to my nieces and nephews and making them amusingly furious about singing it wrong. But I think the change in melody would be too subtle, and would just mystify them.

Well, like every song and story, you really have to suit your performance to your audience.

I wrote this song first for myself, and with fellow adult friends in mind, rather than for children (at least not of an age where they are still learning to sing the alphabet the "right way" -- by the time kids reach the age of 12 or so, their sense of irony and subtlety is maturing). I agree that the song would work better to the original tune for young children.

Though my Dad picked up right away on the fact that tune "Goes with" the scrambled letters.... of course, he could be biased ... and he has had a strong working knowledge of his abc's for nigh seventy years, at least ;-)

As an experiment this morning, I did a different tune for the song -- giving each of the letters the same notes in my song as they have in the original: "C" for A and B, "G" for C and D, etc., so that the melody was just as chopped up as the letter-order.

Wasn't really a tune at all. Can you say: "Atonal mish-mash," boys and girls? ;-).

Another thing about the difference between singing this song for young children and singing it for youths or adults (potentially, that is -- I've only sung it for one person so far), is that the little children probably wouldn't catch the common acronyms I slipped in there: K.G.B., T.L.C., and P.D.Q. (though they would probably get "U and I"). I did that, primarially, to make it easier to remember and sing. But I'd also like to think that that it adds a bit of humor to the song, since so much of our modern language has become something of an "alphabet soup."

Over the weekend, I discovered that this computer (that I've had going on 5 years now... ahem) came pre-loaded with Windows Movie Maker.

I don't have a camera, mind you, or even a microphone (or headset), but I thought I could practice using this program if I made an "Alphabet slide show" with the scrambled letters and midi for this song.

And then, I used that thought to come up with two more verses to the song. This is what I've got so far:

I wasn't quite happy with those second and third verses (that last one, especially, is a tangle, scansion-wise, and the final coda had a mean streak) so I did some more tweaking. Here's what I settled on, just now:

I've also been tweaking the letter-order in the second verse (I realized that Q and U should really be together, and I think I found a more comfortable spot for poor W (a triple syllable letter in a single syllable world).

Someone recommended ABC Explorer to me. It's a free download. I've used it a bit but am struggling with it. Your notation works in it (except for my misprint in the second line - the first note is 3/2, and the time sig should be 2/2 to make it add up).

By the way -- shortly after I made the video for "Albaphet snog," my brain decided it was a good idea to keep me awake by ear-worming the alphabet to every nursery rhyme tune of comparable length that it knew (amusing for the first ten minutes...).

Hey, Mo --

Just got back from hand-transcribing your abc text to Noteworthy Composer (Glad ABC notation was designed for humans as well as machines). I can mostly make it scan, except for "W," which only takes up one space when written, but three spaces when sung.

I know it's meant to be a tongue-twister, and is designed to catch people up. But are you sure you're not missing some notes?
