"Dossie Lee" is bluegrass song similar to "Wild Mountain Flowers for Mary". I learned the latter tune from an old fiddler at a jam session. He asked if he cound sing a tune but his fiddlin' was so good we kinda ignored him until it was about time to go. He then started singing the tune and I was mesmerized by his voice. His voice was as sonorous as his fiddle. I never saw that old man again and that was about 6 or 7 years ago. Gifted people like that (especially fiddlers!) should live forever. This life is enriched by meeting people such as him and if I could only see and hear his voice and fiddle again...

I am eventually going to get the November Rain CD because that is the only CD I've seen that has 'Dossie Lee'. There are some other good tracks on the volume also.

Thanks.

Here's what I transcribed from the sound sample:

On a beautiful Sunday morning
In the hills of East Tennessee,
Pretty wild mountain flowers are bloomin'
On the grave of Dossie Lee.

And here's a quote:
Ken Orrick [lead singer and rhythm guitar player for Lost Highway Bluegrass Band] was featured in the June 2001 issue of Bluegrass Now magazine. The article, by Chris Jones, is entitled Ken Orrick - Songs that Mirror Life. The piece covers some of Ken's personal history and documents many of the events that inspired songs like Dossie Lee and Tennessee Snow.
A web search for "Dossie Lee" turns up lots of genealogy sites with records of various people named Dossie Lee. Funny, I never heard of the name Dossie before.

Thanks Jim.

My kinfolk are (or air, ifin' yur frum Tennis-say) from Harriman, Tenn. (Just kiddin', you Volunteers!) My grandpappy was a farmer/moonshiner there before the TVA era. I loved hisn' non-standard English, as you can tell from this note.

Dossie Lee was a "poplar" hillbilly name fur the fillie "ginder" back in them southern backwood deep, dark, hollars. I think it is a beautiful name and if I have another child I think I'm agonna' name her...... ... Sue! (JK,again).

Seriously, I am going to get the CD (available only by snail-mail though) because of the great bluegrass music, including Dossie Lee. I have never seen that track listed on another CD and the song probably has not been covered by anyone else.

Cruiser--

The song is also listed on a new CD called "Bluegrass Gospel Compilation" by Lost Highway. Order info and email/contact info at Lost Highway's site. Hope this helps.
