The version on the database is incomplete. This is the complete version.

NEW MOWN HAY
Traditional

1. As I strolled out one bright new morn,
All under the new mown hay, ah,
I there did espy a fair pretty maid,
Under the new-mown hay, ah,
Under the new mown hay, ah

2. I asked of her could I lay her down
All under the new mown hay, ah,
But the answer that she gave to me,
Was 'Young man, leave me alone, ah, young man, leave me alone, ah!

3. 'For there is a dew that is on the grass,
Will spoil my cambric gown, ah,
And it cost my father into his purse,
Many a pound and crown, ah, many a pound and crown, ah'

4. He says, 'There is a wind that blows from the north,
Will blow the dew away, ah!
And I will lay my riding cloak,
Under the new-mown hay, ah, under the new-mown hay, ah'

5. 'O, if will you come to my father's garden
It is walléd all around, ah,
There you can have my maidenhead,
And thirty thousand pound, ah, thirty thousand pound, ah'

6. So he's gone down to her father's garden
It is walléd all around, ah,
But she give him the slip and she slipped inside,
She locked him out of door, ah, locked him out of door, ah

7. 'There is a cock in my father's garden
He never will tread the hen, ah,
But he struts all day and he flaps his wings
And I think you're just like him, ah, I think you're just like him, ah!

8. 'And there is a flower in my father's garden
It's calléd the merry girl, ah
And if young men are wanting when they can
They cannot when they will, ah, they cannot when they will, ah

9. 'For when you met me out on the road
You thought you'd met a fool, ah
Go take your Bible in your hand
Go a little more to school, ah, go a little more to school, ah!'

Recorded by Martin Carthy on Ashley Hutchings et al, An Hour with Cecil Sharp and Ashley Hutchings, where you can also hear the original cylinder recording, possibly of Alfred Edghill of Somerset. Also by Martin Carthy and and Dave Swarbrick on Skin & Bone.

Dick, I had cause to look up New Mown Hay recently and found it incomplete and without a tune. I posted the full words a week or so ago, so here's the tune.

Hi, Ian - I can't get these tunes to play. Part of the problem is that the heading is all mashed together because you don't have the HTML line breaks [br], but in angle brackets instead of the square ones. I don't think my ABCMUS likes it when you change meter mid-song. I don't know if it works on other players or not, but it sure won't work on mine.
Also, it would have been better if you had used the filter or the forum search and found the threads where these songs appeared originally, and then posted the tune in a thread that already contained the lyrics. It makes things easier to find when the lyrics, the tune, and the discussion of a song are in one thread instead of several. Can you do anything to fix the tunes and post them in the original threads? Then I'll delete these. Thanks.
-Joe Offer-

Being older and wiser now, I added X:1 to the beginning of the tune and pasted in line breaks, and it works fine now.
