Subject: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: GUEST,travellin' Catter Date: 01 Aug 03 - 10:57 AM What works to help fade scars? I asked doctors and people at work and they all say "Mederma", not because they've actually used it, but because they watch too much TV. I don't want to paint on a cover-up, that goes too far into weirdsville, but information on anything to help fade them would be appreciated! |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: GUEST,MMario Date: 01 Aug 03 - 11:46 AM good heredity and proper treatment at the time of scarring are big factors. but according to people I've talked with the biggest factor you can control is to keep the scar and skin around it well moistureized - any decent skin cream should do. |

Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: okthen Date: 01 Aug 03 - 12:40 PM Comfrey cream if you can find it, it's also called "Knitbone" good for all skin ailments I'm told. If they are scars already it may be too late, the best we ever found was "Doubleday's" but we're in the UK. |

Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: GUEST Date: 01 Aug 03 - 01:23 PM Vitamin E and good exfoliation over time will fade some scars, but if you are over 45 your scars will not fade much. |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: Kim C Date: 01 Aug 03 - 01:26 PM Covering it up is weird? Well, if you change your mind, there's a product called Dermablend that works wonders. The Vitamin E should help. |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: GUEST,travellin' Catter Date: 01 Aug 03 - 01:46 PM Thanks everyone, I'll follow up on the suggestions. The doctors did a nice job in stiching me back up, so there's no pucker or ridges, but I'm pale, so the big purple line really stands out (a friend called it "ya know, singing dinosaur purple"). It's healed but relatively new, so I figured this would be the time to tend to it. Kim, 'covering it up' as in make-up! A friend suggested using foundation to cover the scarring, but what happens when you go swimming or sweat and it runs off? That would look even stranger! |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: Kim C Date: 01 Aug 03 - 02:38 PM Dermablend, as I understand it, is waterproof. I have never used it, but did know someone who did, to cover up acne. If all else fails, just make it a decoration. Seriously. If it doesn't bother you, it won't bother anyone else. |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: Rapparee Date: 01 Aug 03 - 02:56 PM My wife feels that the scars on her throat ARE a decoration. They result from the surgery she had for thyroid cancer at age 17. And I'm glad she's got them! She tells me that even with scars that old, vitamin E cream works a little. |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: Helen Date: 02 Aug 03 - 04:13 AM From memory, arnica ointment is good for scars. And a very very quick search on the 'Net also turned up comfrey ointment as a possible help. Check with a herbalist or alternative health practitioner first though. Helen |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: Jeri Date: 02 Aug 03 - 07:39 AM I just thought of something else and perhaps a good reason why cover-up wouldn't be such a bad idea. If the scar is somewhere exposed to the sun, a sunburn could interfere with healing and make it worse. Scars don't have melanin - no natural protection from the sun. Any makeup will have some sunscreen properties, the more opaque the better, or you could use plain sunscreen...or both. |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: okthen Date: 02 Aug 03 - 10:31 AM If the wound is recent, I (again) recommend Comfrey we have been using it for years. |
Subject: RE: BS: Homeopathic Vanity Question--Real BS From: GUEST Date: 03 Aug 03 - 09:56 AM If all else fails, just make it a decoration. Seriously. If it doesn't bother you, it won't bother anyone else. Saw a documentary on PBS many moons ago about women who'd had mastectomies due to breast cancer. One woman interviewed was wearing a blouse that exposed that side of her chest. She had had decorative tattooing that incorporated the nipple as part of the design. Personally, I'm not a big fan of tattooing but no big deal. My point is that this woman had obviously transformed a surgery that altered her appearance into something artisitic and rather aesthetically pleasing...and this alone enhanced her innate beauty. She was absolutely gorgeous. |
