Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: fat B****rd Date: 02 Aug 03 - 12:57 PM I shall be watching the Afro Celts on BBC 4 tonight no matter what sort of festivel it is. |
Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Harry Basnett Date: 03 Aug 03 - 07:03 AM OK......I concede that apart from two numbers from Eliza it was a bit sparse on yer actual folk front... |

Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: zanderfish3 (inactive) Date: 03 Aug 03 - 02:42 PM I started to listen on friday 5pm, heard 2 pop songs and turned it off, same on saturday at 9pm. The BBC only wants pop songs. |

Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: GUEST,KB Date: 04 Aug 03 - 12:35 PM Oops - we got there & then remembered why we hadn't been for 10 years. Its a wonderfully relaxed festival and is beautifully run. But way too crowded for us. The club tent was really good - but the other bits were too busy & to be honest the sound wasn't as good as I'd have expected. Still - it was a nice weekend. |

Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 04 Aug 03 - 06:53 PM Friend of mine who was there says Linda Thompson was booked but didn't appear due to 'her throat problems'.... so they had to put up with Fairport as a substitute. Manitas got back from a weekend at the Dranouter music festival in Belgium today with the news that Linda Thompson was there...... Hmmmmmm LTS |
Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Noreen Date: 04 Aug 03 - 07:44 PM She may have been booked to appear at both, Liz, one on each day- a lot of artistes do this for the big festivals. Did Linda sing at Dranouter? |
Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:02 AM I know that, Noreen, have done it myself, but if she wasn't well enough to perform at one, but went to another...... although to be honest, I don't know if she performed - Manitas was busy performing himself, and I was elsewhere. LTS |

Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: manitas_at_work Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:31 AM Not only was Linda Thompson booked to appear at Dranouter but so were Eliza Carthy (with the Oyster Band and other guests) and Afro Celt. I didn't get to see any as Albion Morris were scheduled to be dancing while the first to were on and I was just to shattered to stay on site to see Afro Celt. It's probably not hard to appear at both festivals - I should imagine that there is an air service from Stansted to Brussels, Ostend or Lille and Dranouter has a heli-pad. |
Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: GUEST,KB Date: 05 Aug 03 - 11:58 AM There was an announcement at Cambridge that Linda Thompson was unable to sing on the Sunday as scheduled because she had a problem with her voice which had become apparant the previous night. So it was a very last minute cancellation. I had been especially looking forward to seeing her & I hope she is back on form soon. |
Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Liz the Squeak Date: 06 Aug 03 - 04:00 AM Ah, she obviously over did it on Saturday in Dranouter - if that was the day she appeared...... LTS |
Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Noreen Date: 06 Aug 03 - 06:57 AM Many people here will know that Linda has had long-standing problems with her voice, which kept her away from performing for years but which we hoped were in the past. As the problems appear to be recurring, I think Linda deserves sympathy and understanding rather than aspersions being cast concerning her behaviour. I suggest you check your facts Liz before posting on an international forum. |

Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Mrs.Duck Date: 06 Aug 03 - 12:51 PM We watched Afro Celts and thought they were OK but nothing new and quite honestly since it was the only televised performance from Cambridge it would have been better to start with a compilation of events throught the day and then just show half the Afro celts set. |

Subject: RE: Cambridge on Radio 2 From: Linda Kelly Date: 06 Aug 03 - 01:06 PM Well we went and it was excellent- and quite a lot of folk actually, but not all of it was televised. Excellent acts were Danu and Oi Va Voi who were amazing. The Pack did brilliantly for their first Cambridge and there was a good mix of everything. Some of the non folk was good -Laura Cantrell was excellent . For a last minute act Fairport were astonishing and although her number 1 fan I didnt miss Linda Thompon. The disappointments were Rosanne Cash and Julian Cope who frankly was just weird and so full of himself if he was chocolate he would have licked himself to death! |
