Subject: Lyr Req: All kinds of songs about salt
From: Downeast Bob

I'm putting together a children's book based on a far-fetched folktale about why the sea tastes salty. Besides writing kids' books, I tell stories, play stringed instruments and sing songs. I'm looking for songs I can sing in schools or put on a cd to accompany the book. Songs about salt: where it comes from, what it's good for, legends about it, funny tales about it, whatever. Any ideas?

Well I don't know any songs but here is a little story.

When I worked in Iran we used to pass the salt pans on the way to work. That's the place where they harvest sea salt. What they do is level many acres of land along the coastline and separate it from the sea with dykes or low walls of earth.

To let the seawater in they bulldoze openings in these walls and the water rushes in, then they close the gaps. When the water first runs in, all the sea birds swoop down and catch the fish that are stranded in the shallow water. So when we drove past, every so often we would see the salt pans swarming with seabirds.

So that is the story of why Sea Salt is so rich in trace elements, mostly phosphates.

Hi Downeast Bob,

There are a heap of songs mentioning salt, right here on Digitrad - you find them by entering a search-word in the 'Lyrics & Knowledge' search box. If you are looking for words just check 'DT', not 'Forum'. A quick check on the word 'salt' will find many to search through. Most will probably just mention the "salt, salt, sea", but you may find something useful.

Cheers - Sam

Salt and cosmology:

http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/hamlets_mill/hamletmill.htm

Look for the Icelandic poem in chapter VI, "Amlodhi's Quern". I think this spine-chilling legend is what Sequentia sing on track 5 of their CD "Edda". Not exactly children's material.

There will be a shitload of Hindu songs about Krishna swallowing the poisonous salt ground by that mill and thereby saving the earth from toxic death (it turned his throat blue). I've no idea how to find them. I bet Gibb Sahib can.

I would also bet that there were some angry Indian topical songs about the Great Hedge (almost certainly lost now) and a few decades later, songs from Gandhi's resistance to the Salt Tax.

"Johnny Cope" is deived from a lost East Lothian coal mining song, "Gang to the coals in the morning". The mine was Prestongrange, and its coal fired the salt pans at Prestonpans. The railway in between them was where Cope's army made their stand.

A couple of notes

SALT is the story of award winning and internationally renowned photo-artist, Murray Fredericks on his annual solo pilgrimage to the heart of Lake Eyre in the remote north corner of South Australia. It is a piece on the personal journey of the artist, the creative process and the landscape itself.

I saw this on TV a few months ago - it is brilliant - maybe the artist could be interested in helping you with pictures (commercial work of course - he does it for a living)

There was also a documentary some years on Salt (the chemical, mining, uses in industry, food, etc) which was brilliant - but I don't seem to be able to find a useful link online - can't remember if it was a Radio only one - think it may have been on the ABC (Aust) Science (radio) show (there may have been a book), but there is a multitude of extra returns on the search topic.

For the last thousand years or so folks in the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia have made their living carving out blocks of salt from the salt deposits there, deposited back when the Depression was another arm of the Red Sea. Caravans of camels would then transport the salt blocks to major market towns. No doubt they now travel with MP3 players and chorus along with the hip-hop music.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Intergalactically-famed super-chef Mark Sargeant (all right, he's my nephew), is opening a restaurant in Folkestone, UK, called Rocksalt on June 3. I'm working on a song to celebrate the opening, but sadly not in time to include a blue clicky on this thread.
