Does anyone know the original lyrics to this song? I can find only a parody to it (Pattling Ford) in DT.

Thanks

Teru

WHEN YOU WORE A TULIP (AND I WORE A BIG RED ROSE)
words by Jack Mahoney, music by Percy Wenrich, 1914

(used in "For Me and My Gal," with Gene Kelly and Judy Garland)

When you wore a tulip, a sweet yellow tulip, and I wore a big red rose,
When you caressed me, 'twas then Heaven blessed me,
What a blessing no one knows.
You made life cheery when you called me dearie,
'Twas down where the blue grass grows,
Your lips were sweeter than julep
When you wore that tulip, and I wore a big red rose.
Are there any verses to this song, or is this all there is?

Thank you very much for your rapid response. I am not quite sure if they are all, but they are enough for me.

With my kindest regards

Joe....

I was about to post the words when I saw yours.

If this song is like so many others I have or am looking for, there are two forgotten verses to go with that chorus. I especially enjoy scrounging up these verses - usually, when I do, I find out why they were forgotton (intentially).

The Levy sheet music collection has promise of providing some of these, I'm headed there now to look for 'tulip'.

When You Wore A Tulip And I Wore A Big Red Rose
Words by Jack Mahoney, Music by Percy Wenrich
Originally copyright 1914 by Leo Feist, Inc., New York

I met you in a garden in an old Kentucky town,
The sun was shining down, you wore a gingham gown;
I kissed you, as I placed a yellow tulip in your hair,
Upon my coat you pinned a rose so rare.
Time has not changed your loveliness, you're just as sweet to me,
I love you yet, I can't forget the days that used to be.

    CHORUS (2x)
    When you wore a tulip,
    A sweet yellow tulip,
And I wore a big red rose,
    When you caressed me,
    'twas then Heaven blessed me,
What a blessing, no one knows.

    You made life cheery,
    When you called me dearie,
'Twas down where the bluegrass grows,
Your lips were sweeter than julep,
    When you wore that tulip
And I wore a big red rose.

The love you vowed to cherish has not faltered thro' the years,
You banish all my fears, your voice like music cheers,
You are the same sweet girl I knew in happy days of old,
Your hair is silver, but your heart is gold.
Red roses blush no longer in your cheeks so sweet and fair,
It seems to me, dear, I can see white roses blooming there.

    CHORUS (2x)

C

I figured there would be more verses, Tiger, and that the Levy Collection would have 'em. The Hal Leonard books I have often leave out the verses. How the heck do you read the songs in the Levy Collection, though? Do you have to strain like I do, or do they come through clearly on your machine?

ALSO A OFF COLOUR PARODY that I learned back in the 1930's

When you wore your nitie, your lilly white nite and I wore my BVD's
First I undressed her and then I carressed her what a form she showed to me

Cant remember the rest but the last line was
"I white washed her little red rose" ???
Again not sure of that line

Joe,

After a bibliographic search of the Levy collection, when several sheets of music come to the screen, are you clicking on a particular sheet? It enlarges it to fill the screen with just that page. Should be clear enough to read.

Yes, Barbara, I AM looking at the enlarged reproductions at the Levy collection. I suppose maybe I'd better invest in a larger monitor or better reading glasses, eh?

When you drove a Buick, A big yellow Buick
And I drove a little red Ford
You tried to guide me, as you passed by me
But your insults I ignored.
You got stuck in a mud hole, a big slippery mud hole
and your engine raced and roared
I pulled your Buick, your big yellow Buick
With the tail of my little red Ford!

(At least the version my Dad used to sing!)

Here's what I remember:

They drove a Buick,
A big yellow Buick,
And I drove a little red Ford.

When they passed by me,
They both tried to chide me
But their insults I ignored.

They ??????

But they had to thank their Lord.

For they had a stallin'
And I had ta haul 'em
Back home in my little red Ford.

A (G rated) parody sung by at least one barbershop quartet.
After singing it straight, it is followed by this "second" verse and chorus:

Last week down at the greenhouse Ned and I, we got a job,
To while away the hours among the pretty flowers.
To save hotel expenses we slept on the greenhouse floor.
Pajamas were the things we never wore.
One night last week we woke to find the greenhouse all aflame.
There was no time for clothes, and it really was a shame.

Ned grabbed a tulip, a sweet yellow tulip,
and I grabbed a big red rose,
The greenhouse was burning and for safety we were yearning
and we had no time for clothes.
Next morning the jury condemned us with fury
for running around so exposed.
I said, "Now judge, quit your stallin' the petals are fallin'
from his tulip and my big red rose!"

These are all the lyrics I can remember my dad singing to me:

Say Bill, do you remember, not so very long ago,
A girl named Nellie Brown,
We used to ride around?
I took her to a picnic not so very far from here
And there you stole my Nellie Brown away.

You drove a great big Buick
So she hopped right in with you.
And as I drove home that evening
Gee, Bill, but I felt blue.

For you drove a Buick, a big yellow Buick
And I drove a little red Ford.
As you passed by me
You both tried to guy me
but your insults I ignored.

When you climbed that mud hill
Was there that you stuck, Bill
How your engine just puffed and roared.
But you drove a Buick, a big yellow Buick
That was tied to my little red Ford.

I'd love to know if there is any recording of this song.

Rugby club version, UK ca 1965-70

She wore no blouses
And I wore no trousers
And we wore no underclothes
And when she caressed me
She damn near undressed me
It's a good job no-one knows.
I went to the doctor
He said "Where did you block her?"
I said "Down where the green grass grows"
And he said, quick as a twinkle,
"That pimple on your winkle
Will be bigger than a red, red, rose"

I first met Sally Hawkins down the old Kent Road
Her drawers were hanging down, so I slipped her half a crown
for she was a no good girl (scooby doop, scooby doop!)
She wore no blouses, and I wore no trousers
we both wore no underwear
and when she caressed me, she damn near undressed me
what a feeling no one knows! (Cor Blimey......)
I went to the doctor, he said, "Where did you have her?"
I said down where the green grass grows.....
And He said, "Quick as a twinkle, that pimple on your winkle
will be bigger than a red, red rose!"

The parody that I know actually begins with the original chorus, then adds another couple of "verses" to that chorus:

When you wore your nightie
That little white nightie
And I wore my BVDs
First I caressed you
And then I undressed you
What a form you showed to me.

I played with your boobies
Your lily-white boobies
And down where the short hair grows
And as your kisses grew sweeter
I whipped out my peter
And whitewashed your little red rose.

This is how I heard it as an 11 yr old boy.
She was in her nighty, a thin yellow nighty and I was in my BVDs.
As I undressed her oh how I caressed her and this is what she showed to me.
Big floppy titties, big floppy titties and down where the dark hairs grow. As the moments grew sweeter I pulled out my peter and whitewashed her little red rose.

As best as I can recollect, these are the words to a parody of "When she wore a tulip". I don't know if there were any more verses or if all the words are correct. Would appreciate comments and corrections.

When the world began,
The Lord took musn and sand,
And He created man,
But Adam wasn't satisfied,
He had to have a bride,
So the Lord took a rib from Adam'side
So they started out together,
Never met before,
But they recognized each other,
By the cothes each other wore . . .

Oh she wore a tulip,
A bright yellow tulip,
And he wore a bright red rose,
As they grew older'
There was something he told her,
From her head down to her toes,
Oh they created a panic,
The Lord is some mechanic,
And if I ever need a harem,
I've got six more ribs to spare 'em,
And she blushed like a sweet new bride.

My Dad learned this at his fraternity in the fifties.
He taught it to us as kids. He played the ukelele.
On my 1st day of kindergarten, when the nun
asked if anyone knew any songs.
I sang this one (and came home day one with a note pinned to my shirt - my Mom was horrified).

Oh Adam was the first man,
before the world began.
The Lord took up some sand,
and from it he made man.
But, Adam wasn't satisfied,
he said I want a bride.
So the Lord took up a rib from Adam's side.

They set out to meet each other.
Never met before.
But, they recognized each other by
the clothes each other wore.
Oh, he wore a tulip,
a big yellow tulip.
And she wore a big red rose.

Adam grew bolder, and that's when he told her,
from her head down to her toes.
(refrain) Down to her toes.
Kid your dynamic.
That Lord was some mechanic.
How he made you from a rib,
God only knows.
If I ever want a harem,
I've got six more ribs to spare 'em.
And she blushed like a big red,
Blushed like a big red,
Blushed like a big red rose.
