Just been listening for the third or fourth time to a really nice new CD thata came my way, thought I'd mention it. Very southern English melodeon, concertina and songs from Dan Quinn and Will Duke, full of bounce and quiet mirth.
Listeners to Eliza Carthy's "Anglicana" must have noticed one track "Little Gypsy Girl" that sudddenly stands out from the "bright young things" accompaniments on the rest of the record: the radical change in rhythm and style of that track is driven by the old fogeys Quinn and Duke. Get "Scanned" and you can hear a lot more of the same stuff, and bloody good it is too. It's called "Scanned", by the way, because Will Duke is playing one of Scan Tester's old concertinas...a nice link with the past.
Not sure how easy it would be to get a copy, but the details are Hebemusic, HEBECD003

Hi Greg. These two "old fogeys" are great to listen to for their playing as well as their songs. Get their earlier CD Wild Boys for more fun and frolics (and on the subject of 'frolics' Hebe Music are also responsible for inflicting the CD from 'Flowers and Frolics' on the public)

Now will someone re-issue Scan Tester on CD?

Can you really not get Scan Tester on CD? Seems hard to believe, with the current interest in English music.

Greg...
Admittedly Dan and Will have done a couple of stirling CD's in Wild Boys and Scanned...but, who rememembers "The No Ronnies"?!
(I'm taller than Will anyway!)

Seriously though, some of us old fogies could give the bright young things a run for their money !

Cheers Ralphie (Just about to hit Dartmoor for some serious foolishness)

And...Q and D normally end up at Whitby Fest in one form or another.
Catch 'em while you can...but, don't feed them after midnight!

After mentioning Scan Tester earlier I've dug out the old cassettes from Veteran Tapes "I Never Played to Many Posh Dances", and I've thoroughly enjoyed the music and singing again. There is a superb booklet by Reg Hall to accompany the tapes.

Greg and Ralphie, do you want to start a "Get Scan on CD" campaign? There are some fragments on Topic, but he deserves a lot more than this.

It would seem to be a very basic part of any english folk music library, he should be out on CD. But I guess, for all the journalistic nods at English music, the actual market for the real thing is pretty minimal. Itt's all bums on seats in the end. but let's all keep plugging away

Actually the question should be'Is the world ready for Scan Tester?'
Having just listened again to the tapes, the renditions of Scotland The Brave/Happy Wanderer, not to mention The Carnival Is Over should be enough to frighten any traditionalists away. And then he launches into an amazing polka or stepdance that simply takes your breath away.

RELEASE SCAN TESTER NOW!!!

Dan Quinn and Will Duke were (and probably still are) a staple item every week at the Royal Oak in Lewes.

Dry wit and musical excellence, a wonderful combination.

Murray
