From: GUEST
Date: 04 Aug 03 - 11:06 AM

Hi ....I've done my "due diligence" and can only find words.Could someone provide chords appropriate for a ukelele.
               Thanks a lot.
                               Robin

PS It's got this great nonsense verse:-
The crows nest fell and it killed the crow
and the star-board watch was two hours slow
                But the Capatain sang Fello-de-oh-doh
And he played his Ukelele as the ship went down

Well, the abc/midi melody is posted in this thread. Does that help any? It should.

Thanks for the reply...I can play it and accompany myself on the melodeon but I'm not good at working out names of chords.I was wondering if there was some cool ukelele(or mandolin) progression someone knew...melodeon chords can be limited

I play "The Wreck of the Nancy" on Uke in the key of G. I play G, C, and D7. What kind of melodian do you have? It should be easy to transpose the chords to any key. Howie

Isn't this properly titled "He Played His Ukelele As The Ship Went Down" ? A "comedy Fox-Trot by Arthur Le Clerq" Published 1932 by Campbell Connolly & Co, London. I have photo copies of the sheet music for it (F Major) with Uke chords in those little chord boxes. If you want to post an address, I'll happily send you a copy.

.Howie, yes I SHOULD be able to transcribe it.But for no reason that stands up to scrutiny,I've always played the melodeon by ear and tried to play intuitivly. If I need to work things out or sight -read ,I do it on the english concertina. The trouble arises when I can play a tune or song on one instrument but not another.
As probably for most people, time is the issue.
                        Regards   Robin

Bingo....the kind " guest " sent me the photo copied lyrics+chords and went to some considerable trouble to help me.
The only problem is he did not include his/her name or a return address for me to write and thank him.I'd like to do that.
It a wonderful community that helps out like this.
                     Thank you guest

Hi Guest Himself - I'm glad you got the chords i sent, BUT, having examined them again you will need to change those A augmented chords for A minors. My error. Have fun.

Hi

I've found this old thread while seeking music/chords for "Nancy Lee" or "He Played His Ukulele While the Ship Went Down."

If the very kind person who offered to mail copies of sheet music for this song is still active on Mudcat, could he/she post again and perhaps we can make contact. I'd be more than happy to send postage costs/copying costs via PayPal or whatever if he/she could send me the sheet music.

I would then be happy to send in lyrics with chords to Mudcat so that others could have them.

Subject: Lyr Add: HE PLAYED HIS UKULELE AS THE SHIP WENT...
From: Kenny B

Try this its my busking version

HE PLAYED HIS UKULELE AS THE SHIP WENT DOWN
Arthur Le Clerq

[D] Yo-ho my lads yo-ho,
I'll [A] tell you the tale of a [D] sailor,
Who [A] sailed the bay of Biscay,
As the captain of a whaler,
[A] Of this gallant deed, you all should know,
Yo-ho my lads yo-ho,

* I'll [D] tell you the tale of the [G]Nancy Lee,
* The [A] ship that got ship- [D] -wrecked at sea,
* The bravest man was [G] Captain Brown,
* And he [A] played his ukulele as the [D] ship went down,

** [Bm] All the crew were in despair,
** some rushed here and others rushed [A] there,
** But the [D] captain sat in the [G] captain's chair,
** And he [A]played his ukulele as the [D] ship went down,

Yo ho my lads yo ho

He [D] shouted man the rafts,
with [A] chains and ropes you can bind 'em,
The bosun searched both fore and aft,
but was dashed if he could [D] find 'em,
[A] At the mercy of the raging sea,
[A7] was the good ship Nancy Lee,

* So, the bosun said to stoker Jim,
* You'll have to teach me how to swim,
* The stoker answered with a frown,
* "We can learn together as the ship goes down"

** The Captain said to Fireman Mose,
** Get straight into your fireman's clothes,
** While you stand and play your hose,
** I'll play my ukulele a the ship goes down,

* The captain's wife was on the ship,
* And he was glad she'd made the trip
* As she could swim she might not drown,
* So they tied her to the anchor as the ship went down

** The cooks gone mad and the bosun's lame,
** The rudder has gone and the deck's aflame,
** My "G" string's flat, but all the same,
** I shall play my ukelele as the ship goes down,

* And that is the tale of the Nancy Lee,
* The ship that got shipwrecked at sea,
* And Captain Brown who was in command,
Now plays his ukulele in a mermaid band

For what it's worth, when I accompany Howie Leifer [above] on the concertina, I play it un C major.

It's good to be reminded of the song again.

The version we had of it was a 78rpm record on the Piccadilly label , with the song spread over two sides, by the White Star Syncopators.

I've still got the record, which I keep for sentimental reasons, because it's now got chips out of it from the edge.

The White Star Syncopators was one of more than 100 pseudonyms used by the California Ramblers (a group originally from Ohio, obviously) who used all the names to cover their many exploits other than on the label they were signed to (Columbia).

Lhiats,

Bobby Bob, Ellan Vannin

Thanks for all the info. I loved the song when I was little. I have found these 2 parts of the recording on YouTube this evening - and the added joy of watching the record going round and round !
