I'll be spending a couple of nights (midweek) in Chester later in the year. Recollection of previous threads indicate a degree of musical activity - anything regular happening midweek nights?

Mr. Happy - yes, I do sing, don't know whether I'll get to bring a guitar as I'll be sharing a car with work colleagues. I'm a bit out of practice due to complete lack of musical activity in my local area.

the Ship Victory on a Tuesday is a must. easy to find it sits alone in the middle of a car park. So no problem with parking. Alexanders is an open mike spot ,two/three numbers usualy very popular but not very folky.standard varies from excellent to naff.. just like a folk club. when you get there seek out Graham Bellinger or Mike Green for a spot or phone ahead. Alexanders is three mins fron the ship victory.so you could visit both on the same night.
Union vaults for the beer.
The Raven in the Cross Keys on lower bridge street has a varied program depends which sunday as whether it is a session , a singaround or a guest night
Check the Folk Orbit for info around chester as there is lots on everynight and only 15/20 mins drive to most.

Can someone please bring me and this thread up-to-date with some information on any music sessions currently running in Chester, and their format?

My preference is playing traditional english rather than fast irish!

Thanks

Andy

Hi Andy,

Not actually IN Chester but near - every Tuesday night at the Carden Arms in Tilston is folk night / folk club. It's not really a folk club but there are guest nights every so often. The next one is 22nd April when the guest is Virginia Barrett.

My friends and I usually play trad. English tunes but the format of the night varies a lot depending on who's there; some nights there are a lot of singers and others it's a small session with mainly tunes. Occasionally the Time Bandits drop by so we have lots of traditional English tunes; last week Full House were there and we had a really good mix of songs and tunes and a fabulous night.

The second Tuesday every month is Folk Night at the Farmer's Arms in Kelsall. This varies a lot depending on who arrives (the Time Bandits sometimes!). The regulars play mostly traditional English - some singing, mainly tunes. I go to this one on the second Tuesday instead of the Carden Arms (because it's near my daughter's house and she goes). Like you, our preference is for traditional English tunes.

I know there are lots of other sessions in and around Chester but I don't go to them; perhaps people who do will post details.

Marilyn

Thanks Marilyn - what time does the Carden Arms typically get started?
The next few tuesdays are problematic but I'll definitely try to get over to Tilston.
I live near Frodsham so the Farmer Arms is quite convenient.

Can anyone give any info on the Union Vaults weekly session which I found mentioned on a web site recently?

Thanks

Andy

Andy,

Alas the Vaults session is no more - squeezed out by big screem futbawl!

Mr Happy's sinaround is now at the Royal Oak, Faulkener Street, Hoole, every Wednesday.

Also there's a good sesh monthly at the Carlton Tavern, Handbridge, Chester on 2nd Fridays.

Its on this Fri tomorrow.

The Ship Victory session has also sunk beneath the waves for similar reason to above.

Hope this update helps

Andy - the Carden Arms starts at about half past eight officially but often doesn't get going much before nine o'clock. Come and say hello - I'm the one with two melodeons, flute and various recorders so am easy to identify.

If you live near Frodsham then the last Friday of the month session at the Shady Oak at Tiverton near Tarporley might not be too far for you. I haven't been since it started up again but have heard that it's good. My friends and I go to the Dusty Miller at Wrenbury on the last Friday but I guess that would be a bit too far from Frodsham. Good session though and landlord Mark feeds us well!

Nobody seems to have mentioned Frodsham Folk Club, an excellent establishment which has been run for many years by Alt and Carol Alexander. Friday nights, 8-30 start, I think. Unfortunately, they were forced out of their previous home some time ago and had to take up residence in the local Conservative Club. There was much soul searching went into that move I can tell you. All I will say is that I have been to Frodsham Conservative Club and found it is run by very nice people.

Two Fridays hence, Sarah Grey and Kieron Mearns will be there. Whoopee.

From Thursday 26th September 2013, the Gardeners Arms session is relocating to The Bridge Inn on Tarvin Road Chester.

Great beers too. Choice of at least FIVE real ales and best of all, no football. (at least not in the same room as the music!) See ya there.

I had an enquiry today from someone who wants some gentle daytime folk-dancing in Chester.
If no-one knows of any I'll offer them your Monday session instead - is it still on?
What else is still on?
In Kelsall there is the Folk Festival taster in the Lord Binning (on tomorrow but usually the 3rd Wed).
We used to have a monthly Tues session at the Farmers Arms until the pub closed without warning - we were offered a new home but numbers dwindled till it was not viable. Rumour has it that a new Farmers session has started up - any info anyone?

Further info about the Kelsall Tuesday @ the Farmer's Arms says it is on the last Tues & run by
"Richard but I don't know his surname - he plays mandolin and usually goes to the Frodsham folk club. His dad is called Sid and plays the concertina and they also play with Tom Brown but not Tom Brown the flute player!"

Can anyone pm me a name & email address please.

Mo,

Yes, it's on
Werb's has its own car park in James Street, which is a small street on the left just before you get to Werb's.

The Cottage pub is on the corner of James Street.

If the car park gates are locked, you can get the key from the bar inside Werb's.

Push rhe outside door to Werb's then ring the door bell on the left wall for them to let you in, you'll hear a buzzer, then pull the door open

St Werb's

It'll be good to see you again!
