Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kathryn Douglas: fiddle tne frm Hebrides From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 05 Aug 03 - 07:55 PM I was going to post the following to your other thread on the subject, but the link from their site to MP3.com screwed my browser and I had to re-start the computer... There are a good few tunes named for one Douglas or another (we've got about a bit over the years) but I've never heard of a tune called Kathryn Douglas; the nearest I can find is a reference to a modern piece, Miss Katrina Margaret Douglas, written by a John Douglas (her father, I think). Do the Davis family say where they got it? "Scottish traditional" (as on their website) isn't especially helpful. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kathryn Douglas: fiddle tne frm Hebrides From: Sorcha Date: 05 Aug 03 - 08:00 PM From Fiddlers Companion: BRECHIN CASTLE. AKA and see "Miss Douglas of Brigton," "Lady Harriot Hay." Scotland, Strathspey. B Flat Major. Standard. AAB (Gow, Hunter): AABB (Honeyman, Kerr's, Skye): AABB' (Athole). The melody was known by the alternate titles until Gow published it under the name above in his 1st Repository (1799). The name Brechin is purportedly derived from Brychan the son of Brychan, who moved to the area from southern Wales. The Round Tower at Brechin probably dates from around c. 990 when Kenneth II took control of the area. Subsequently, around 1150, a cathedral and bishopric were founded there. Hunter (1988) notes that Brechin Castle is the seat of the Earls of Dalhousie. Gow (Complete Repository), Part 1, 1799; pg. 32. Honeyman (Strathspey, Reel and Hornpipe Tutor), 1898; pg. 28. Hunter (Fiddle Music of Scotland), 1988; No. 166. Kerr (Merry Melodies), Vol. 1; Set 27, No. 3, pg. 17. MacDonald (The Skye Collection), 1887; pg. 125. Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kathryn Douglas: fiddle tne frm Hebrides From: harpgirl Date: 05 Aug 03 - 09:33 PM I typed in "douglas" at JC's and got a bunch of tunes. It might be the "traditional air" but the sound on this computer is not working so I can't check to see if that is the correct tune. hg |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kathryn Douglas: fiddle tne frm Hebrides From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 05 Aug 03 - 10:39 PM The "traditional air" abc is there in error; someone has put 3 abcs beginning X:1 in the same file, so the search returns them all as if they were the same piece. The first is Castle Douglas, but the second two are unrelated. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Kathryn Douglas: fiddle tne frm Heb From: greg stephens Date: 06 Aug 03 - 06:46 AM Afraid I dont know the tune. I expect everyone's thought of this, but in case not: try a few spellings of kathryn. I live with someone called Kathryn and I know well there are about a hundred ways of spelling the name. The only catherine Douglas I've heard of (might have something to with tune?) is the woman who saved the life of some Scottish king by barring a door with her arm when some baddies were trying to get in and kill him. It must have been one of those doors with big staples to put a wooden bar through, and someone had thrown the bar on the fire becaues they were cold. Anyway, it bust her arm a lot, but it apparently saved the day. This is story is used to expalin (not totally believably) the proverbial phrase "Katy bar the door". |
