Subject: RE: Tune Req: Light the light, keep out the devil From: wysiwyg Date: 23 Jan 04 - 10:28 PM Never did find the sheet music (BAD Wizzy!), but how about a MIDI? I'm sending one to Mmario for Mudcat MIDIs. BTW I believe it's actually an old spiritual, tho I can't cite the source, and that the Stonehill version is perhaps his arrangement and adaptation of same. Great Epiphany piece. ~Susan |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Light the light, keep out the devil From: Azizi Date: 06 Apr 05 - 08:45 AM I have "Shut the door. Keep the devil in the night" on a recently produced CD of various reggae artists. That version really rocks! Of course, I can't find that CD now. That would be too much like right. But I'll post the name of the CD and the artist's name when I find it. [And yes, I need to be more organized.] PS. I thought that this was originally a Caribbean song, but apparently these artists 'reggaed' the song up like they do so many other songs... "Shut the door..." puts in words the Caribbean/Southern African American folk belief about the devil coming out at night to steal folk's souls... The Caribbean folklore has duppies [ghosts] and the boogieman..The same one that lived in the Southern part of the USA... Of course, the connections between West Indian folklore and African American folklore are understandable given the history and bloodlines we share..but-as they say-that is another story... |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Light the light, keep out the devil From: John Hardly Date: 06 Apr 05 - 05:01 PM everything I can find still attributes "original words and music - Randy Stonehill" That is the attribution on the Tim & Mollie O'Brien CD. Could this be one of those "I thought it was an old folk song" about which that other thread is speaking? |
Subject: RE: Tune Req: Light the light, keep out the devil From: John Hardly Date: 06 Apr 05 - 05:02 PM ...by the way -- even if it is penned by Stonehill that still makes it over thirty years old. |
