Just working my slow way through a number of tapes I recorded from Radio 2 mid to late 70's and find a couple of live songs from what appears to be Beverly Festival - Coffee Pot and Brown Boots (there may be others but they are the only ones I caught in passing.

Any idea of the date - even the year - of either the performance or broadcast?

Yes I saw them do that. I think it was Andrew Frank and the song was "When a Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square".

Ah, many happy memories of working with Dave & Al! I learned quite a bit from them (and others), which stands me in very good stead these days on the Isle of Wight.

I think I've got all their LPs and one tape, but no CDs. Must sort that out sometime.

Dave was touring around the Midlands with Don MacLean and Malcolm Stent a couple of years ago.
We remember then both so well playing at the old Bell and Pump folk club in Brum when Derek, now sadly departed, used to pack'em in. We have three old L.P's to remind us of those great times.

Alas I only got to see Cosmotheka once but IMHO they were absolutely recreating the style of the old 'Hall performers. Life was hard on the music hall circuit; if a performer was not up to entertaining the crowd they would well and truly 'die' on stage. The thing I remember about Cosmotheka was the way they exploded onto stage with a well practiced routine guaranteed to hit any audience between the eyes. Just what was wanted to please those partisans at the turn of the century who would take great delight in jibing and booing any act who did not deserve their favours. The folk club of today is a pale imitation of those early Jin Palaces where performers fortunes could be won or lost within seconds.

There was a CD issued about 4 yrs ago "You Only Had To Ask" I got mine from Folk Devils, but they don't list it now. I can't say whether Rocking Chair (Mrs Casey) stock it as since they redesigned their site I find it almost magically difficult to navigate.

Folk Sound Records FSCD55 is the number, no address shown for FolkSound.

Dave Sealey website says to contact them.

I can confirm that the video footage of the Sidmouth concert (at least a copy if not the original master) exists but I wouldn't like to do anything yet 'til I've spoken to Dave Sealey, as I'm not sure the video was officially agreed to. I'll chase up this weekend. I know that Ken Lees is trying to book Dave for our club in the new year but I believe he is busy with panto stuff around this time.

Will follow up soon, it would be good if it could be made available.

Dave Sealey has an enormous collection of sheet music and 78s. About 15 years ago he promised to send me some ragtime songs, which my then singing partner and I were very keen on. I'm still waiting! But if you can pin him down, he'd be an excellent source of material.

And I see from that last link that "Their TV appearances included such programmes as 'The Good Old Days', 'The Bob Monkhouse Show', 'Roy Hudd's Hall of Fame' and their own series from Pebble Mill entitled 'A Postcard from Cosmotheka'" - so there's the material for a compilation video, if it hasn't been wiped.

Maybe someone on BBC Four will someday get their head round putting a programme together bringing it all together...

I was playing a Cosmotheka LP just now which I hadn't played for some time, and this thread came to mind.

I started wondering if Kevin Sheils got anywhere trying to track down that video footage of them at Sidmouth (or anywhere else). I noticed on the back of the record - "Cosmotheka" produced by Richard Digance in 1985, and issued by Dambuster as DAM 008, and there's a warm appreciation of them from Chas and Dave:

"We first heard of Cosmotheka four or five years ago, when somebody lent us a tape of them. We thought it was great and we've been fans of them from that day on. We've since worked with them on gigs and they approach their work with an enthusiasm that's good to see. Another thing we like about them is the way they will burst into song at the slightest excuse. Whether on the plane, in the pub or on the coach. We've had some great sing-ups with these boys. They know a fantastic amount of Music Hall songs and they've got this ability of making every song they sing sound as if it was specially written for them. Anyone who likes to listen to REAL songs will love this LP - we do."

It occurred to me to wonder whether Chas and Dave might have a copy of a video of that show they did at Sidmouth with Cosmotheka on the bill.

The other Cosmotheka record I've got is "A Good Turn-Out" from Highway Records in 1981.

And I see there's a recent compilation You Only Had To Ask. And here's another link with stuff about this, and about "Pop Goes the Century", with Dave Sealey.

They are brilliant to listen to, but it'd be so good to be able to see Al and Dave together once more. There must be something of them on video, somewhere...

Not long after we all "celebrated" the anniversary of WWII in 1989 (or was it 1995?), I asked Dave if he'd come across a song called "The Wop and the Jap and the Hun", which we Stonnall Players hadn't been allowed to sing (Not surprising, really) when he was researching "Keep SmilingThrough", their WWII songs radio series He had, of course; but told me of one he'd found called "Belsen Bill", which is as much lacking in taste as it's possible to be. (I have to take his word for that!)

Well, in a sense I'd say they were recreating the Music Hall feeling in a way that Music Hall reenactors often fail to do. They brought the songs to life and made them feel relevant as well as fun.

Remember the one they found about the Klu Klux Klan, treating them as figures of fun who liked going around dressed up in scary sheets, silly buggers?

Since I moved away from Redditch 25 yrs ago I've been singing stuff from their records, which my mates still up in Worcestershire don't, as it was Cosmotheka's home ground. Incidentally, even when they were touring all over the place Alan said doing Redditch club made them nervous, as everyone knew them personally. Hope you get your info.

Kevin, I remember that show very well, only missed one siddy in the
last 10 year, that was the real WET one !! (Weather of course)

The Cosmotheka show at the Arena was 1998 with Chas 'n' Dave. I've just checked the JKL video web site and they don't have anything listed for that year which matches that Concert.

I'll try and contact Dave Sealy to see if he can help. It's likely that the show was not made commercially available as it also involved C&D, and there may have been rights issues there, but there may be a possibility that the Cosmotheka bit on it's own could be (if it exists). JKL video may not have thought that Cosmotheka alone would be worth releasing but I'd guess from this thread that there culd be demand if the necessary clearances were obtained.

The Sidmouth Arena Theatre was a vintage Cosmotheka show, and if the video exists it'd be great to get hold of it, and to see it made widely available. The video just about everything in the Arena shows, though the emphasis is on the dancing, so I'd be surprised if there isn't a record of it - though there might be copyright issues that wouldn't apply with the dancing teams in the same way.

Is there anyone who could maybe approach Dave Sealy about this? It'd be a brilliant Christmas present.
