Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: bflat Date: 10 Aug 03 - 04:23 PM Sad news. So talented in tap dance, comedy and drama. I found his smile to be beautiful, one of the purest. First acted in a Mel Brooks' film; History of the World-Part 1, as a Roman slave. And I loved his dancing with Baryshnikow in White Nights. He had great style. Ellen |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: GUEST,Lofas99@msn.com Date: 10 Aug 03 - 04:35 PM Another wonderful light has gone out in the world's night sky. Twenty-five or thirty years too early. He will be greatly missed. I bumped into him once twenty years ago, in a news stand at an airport. As I turned to apologize, and began to recognize him, his eyes and face lit up in a smile so warm and genuine, I doubted for a moment that he could be a "celebrity".But he surely was. Bruce |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: GUEST Date: 10 Aug 03 - 04:47 PM He had a great twinkle in his eye as well--mischievious in a very charming way. Very sad. Godspeed to him. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: Alba Date: 10 Aug 03 - 05:30 PM That is very sad news indeed. He was so young. The World loses another Talented Artist. Such a shame. JD |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: SINSULL Date: 10 Aug 03 - 06:04 PM This one is a shock. I remember watching Hines, Hines, and Dad on TV in the 60s. That same smile that lit up the stage. They (Johnny Carson?) showed some films when the boys were only about 10 or 11. Pure magic. It seems he must have had years of choreography left to stage. Very sad. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: katlaughing Date: 10 Aug 03 - 06:41 PM I cannot believe this. He's always been one of my very favourite dancers and actors! And, way too young to be gone from our midst! Thanks, Gregory for the Light you shared and for your mentoring of young dancers, too. Deeply saddened, kat |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: Big Mick Date: 10 Aug 03 - 08:18 PM I am saddened beyond words at this one. I have been a fan of this man since the first time I saw act. God be good to him. Mick |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: Beccy Date: 11 Aug 03 - 08:27 AM You know what I liked most about Gregory Hines? He didn't feel the need to smile on stage all the time. He was REALLY dancing and he didn't let the old cheese-eating grin tap dancer rule apply to him. He wasn't just fantastic- he was an innovator that opened up the doors for people like Savion Glover and Tap Dogs and all the talent we are privileged with seeing now. Rest In Peace and may God watch over you, Mr. Hines. Thank you! Beccy |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: nickp Date: 11 Aug 03 - 09:29 AM A sad loss to the dance world. Nick |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: Mudlark Date: 11 Aug 03 - 05:56 PM Couldn't believe this thread title. Very sad. He seemed not only incredibly talented but a genuine human being. Way, way too young... |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: Melani Date: 12 Aug 03 - 12:27 AM What an incredible raving bummer. An outrageously talented guy. |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: catspaw49 Date: 12 Aug 03 - 07:47 AM I've been having modem problems but when I got on this AM, the only thread I looked for was this one I knew would be here. I could not believe the news of his passing. When Karen got up yesterday afternoon, I asked her, "Just how mortal do you want to feel?"........Gregory Hines was a favorite of both of us and I simply cannot believe that all of that kindness, compassion, humor, and talent, are gone from us now. Thank gawd for film.........But the man he was is lost and it brings a sadness far to hard to describe. I just can't say any more here........way too hard .... Spaw |
Subject: RE: Obit: Gregory Hines, age 57 From: Shelley C Date: 13 Aug 03 - 04:19 PM He was probably the last *great* dancer we may see on film. Those of us who couldn't get to see him live were able to see his wonderful talent on film - although even he never got the exposure he truly deserved. Nowadays they don't give dance roles to proper dancers - just good looking actors who have had a couple of lessons and are made to look better by clever camera angles. A sad loss indeed. |
