Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: ALONG THE ROAD (Dan Fogelberg)

Here's one I heard Doc Watson do once upon a long while ago. I have it on an unmarked tape, so my assumption about the title is just that. Don't know if Doc actually wrote it or not, but it's a beautiful tune - and even makes a nice "parting tune" under the right circumstances.

Somewhere Along the Road

Performed by Doc Watson

[G] Joy at the start

[Em] Fear on the journey

[C] Joy at the [D] coming [G] home

[G] A part of the heart

[Em] Gets lost in the learning

[C] Somewhere [D] along [G] the road

[Am] Along the road

Your feet may stumble

[G] A pilgrim’s faith may fade

[Am] But absence makes the heart grow fonder

[C] When darkness hides [D7] the trail

---------

[G] Cursing the quest

[Em] Courting disaster

[C] Perilous [D] nights [G] forebode

[G] Moments of rest

[Em] And glimpses of laughter

[C] Are treasures [D] along [G] the road

---------

[Am] Along the path

Your steps may stumble

[G] And you may go astray

[Am] But through it all a heart held humble

[C] Will level and light [D7] your way

---------

[G] Joy at the start

[Em] Fear on the journey

[C] Joy at the [D] coming [G] home

[G] A part of the heart

[Em] Gets lost in the learning

[C] Somewhere [D] along [G] the road

[G] Yes, a part of the heart

[Em] Gets lost in the learning

[C] Somewhere [D] along [G] the road

It's called Along the road and it's written by Dan Fogelberg. I have it by him on a CD called Red Rocking Chair, 1981,Flying Fish Records Inc.

The song is actually in D using a capo on 2nd fret and starting in C 1st position.

Your chords leave alot out.
I guess it's the thought that counts :-)

Someone has pointed out a lot of cords are missing. As a 40 year guitar player that just plays enough to sing favorite songs I appreciate simpler chords if possible. I've looked at the chords of Doc Watson and others and for a novice player the chords are difficult. Thanks for the simple.

It's a lovely song.

You'll find Dan's studio version on his 1979 album, Phoenix.
