Subject: RE: Songs about sleep and dreams From: Willa Date: 08 Aug 04 - 02:01 PM FC here are the lyrics for 'I dreamed I saw Unicorns' by Bill Caddick We were traveling north to sing and play For friends that we had never met Been working hard and didn't speak The sky was grey and threatened wet And I dreamed that I saw unicorns Dreamed I saw them wild and white their sudden beauty lit the world Like a star will light a winter's night Pure as love with manes of milk They danced and pranced and cried aloud Bright as rainbows round the stars Their eyes were soft and sad and proud And I wept for the wild and dirty world To which this beauty now was lost And cursed the hungry mind of man That feeds the future at such cost My head was bowed, my eyes were closed When in my ears their voices rang And these few words lodged deep inside And in my very soul they sang We never went away You always knew that we were near Remember how to look for us You'll see we were always here I raised my eyes to seek them out The world was empty all around The rain came tumbling from the sky It drowned all dreams upon the ground And when they asked me why I wept Like one who for his dead love mourns The only answer I could give I dreamed that there were unicorns We never went away You always knew that we were near Remember how to look for us You'll see we were always here |
Subject: RE: Songs about sleep and dreams From: Matt_R Date: 08 Aug 04 - 12:00 PM Don't you know I had a dream last night That you were here with me Lyin' by my side so soft and warm And we talked a while And shared a smile And then we shared the dawn But when I woke up Oh, my dream it was gone Don't you know I had a dream last night And you were here with me Lyin' by my side so soft and warm And you said you'd thought it over You said you were coming home But when I woke up Oh, my dream it was gone I'm not the same Can you blame me Is it hard to understand I can't forget You can't change me I am not that kind of man Don't you know I had a dream last night And ev'rything was still And you were by my side so soft and warm And I dreamed that we were lovers In the lemon scented rain But when I woke up Oh, I found that again, I had been Dreamin', dreamin' again I had been dreamin', dreamin' again - Jim Croce |
Subject: RE: Songs about sleep and dreams From: Flash Company Date: 08 Aug 04 - 11:52 AM Guest Q-- Goodnight Sweetheart was actually Ray Noble (God, I'm old!) One easy one that springs to mind is Irving Berlin's 'Oh how I hate to get up in the morning', don't mess with the lyrics tho', his estate is VERY watchful! There is also one called 'Dreamed that I saw Unicorns', I could probably dredge up the lyrics from the back of my memory, but can't help with composers or chords or technical stuff like that> FC |

When I pretend I'm gay I never feel that way, I'm only painting the clouds with sunshine etc. |
Subject: RE: Songs about sleep and dreams From: Joe_F Date: 08 Aug 04 - 10:21 AM For a little sly comic relief, "Miss Bailey": One night betimes he went to bed, for he had caught a fever. Said he, "I am a handsome man, and I'm a gay deceiver". His candle just at twelve o'clock began to burn quite palely. A ghost stepped up to his bedside and said, "Behold Miss Bailey!" My own theory is that the ghost was a hallucination induced by the fever, which he had caught as a consequence of his gay deceivership. However, she might have been an ordinary dream, for which a Freudian explanation would not be difficult. Or, for that matter, she might have been a real ghost. |
Subject: RE: Songs about sleep and dreams From: JennyO Date: 08 Aug 04 - 07:46 AM Here's a rather silly one that I sang once with a bunch of women. We call ourselves the WWW's (wild wise women). We got all dressed up in our jammies to do it too: Nightie Nightie Ev'ryone Lyrics by Dillie Keane Music by Dillie Keane There's a cosy little bedroom, Cosy bunk beds, oh so neat, Cosy flannelette pyjamas, Cosy bedsocks for our feet. Time to snuggle 'neath the blankets And to close each weary eye, Tired teddy bears kneel to say their prayers For they know that dreamland's nigh. So good night and see you again sometime; Up the stairs to bedsiebyes we must now climb; Time for little hobos To bugger off to bobos, So nightie nightie ev'ryone. As we remove our make-up, We reveal the bitter truth; For beneath our painted beauty Is our sadly fading youth. And so though you think we're gorgeous, And as lovely as our tunes, If we're ever viewed when we're in the nude, We just look like three old prunes. So goodnight, and hope we've not made you blue; Underneath this loveliness we're just like you; For are we beauties? Hardly! It's all thanks to Yardley; So nightie nightie ev'ry one. So goodnight, drive carefully if you're going far; Mine's a pint, and two white wines - See you in the bar; And a treble gin and tonic; And we'll soon be catatonic. So nightie nightie ev'ryone. Nightie nightie ev'ryone. Nightie nightie ev'ryone. Night night.. |

Subject: RE: Songs about sleep and dreams From: Mark Cohen Date: 15 Aug 03 - 11:12 PM Leadfingers, the tune to John of Dreams is Tschaikovsky's, but it's from Symphony No. 6 in Bb minor, not Sleeping Beauty. The tune was borrowed by Tschaikovsky from a southern Italian lullaby entitled "Piva Piva". (That info is from the liner notes of a Mick Moloney album.) I found a Milanese song called "Piva Piva", but with no tune, and not knowing Italian (let alone Milanese dialect), I don't know if it's the one. Something about olive oil and babies, so it might be. PIVA PIVA Piva, piva l'oli d'oliva l'è 'l Bambin che porta i belee, l'è la mamma che spend i danee Fa la nanna o bel bambin, Re divin Re divin. PBB, if it doesn't have to be "folk", I've always liked "Stay Awake" from Mary Poppins. (Might be very appropriate for a sleep clinic!) Aloha, Mark |
