As a means of giving my age away, I will admit to having listened to The Archers almost from the beginning. However at this moment in time I am totally pissed off with this programme. Why are nearly all the male characters wimps and/or pratts? Or jokes!! Why does nothing good ever happen to the Grundys? Why do they drag obvious storylines out for months? What does it have to do with its' tag line "An everyday story of country folk"? It is almost totally irrelevant to todays farming and farmers. Insofar as it reflects any part of a farmers existance, that existance is relevant only to English farmers, and bears little or no relation to the life of a farmer in Scotland, or the north of England. I know that time moves on etc., but this programme is so far outside its' remit that it is in danger of becoming totalty irrelevant.

I reckon Matt Crawford and his cronies have been holding Black Magic rites, summoning the Powers of Darkness to drive the Good Fol of Ambridge out of the village so Borchester Land can redevelop it all. I think they've raised the 19th century Wyrley Slasher of Stffordshire from the dead to walk among the beasts of the village, hamstringing them. Clive Horabin (should that ebe "Horrorbin"?) is Susan Carter's ne'er-do-well brother, who disappeared into the murky underworld kens of the Big Smoke (London to the innocent and ignorant). Last time he was around she got six months for sheltering him. This time she should murder hiom and bury his body under the patio. I think The Archers is the only Soap where nobody's done this yet. (They did it for real in Walsall, where I came from!)

I still think mytheory is in with a chance; Clive was probably sacrificing chickens or goats (or horses) to Mammon.

Not JUST a fictional radio drama! It's the longest running soap in the world. In February it reaches it's 56th birthday. One of the original actors is still in it. Lots of English people have grown up with it from hearing it when their Mum's and Dad's (and grandparents) listened to it. Some of the characters are the great grandchildren of the originals. It's a soap with history! And something of a British institution.

Someone in the complicated triangle surrounding little george kidnaps him. This is not good for the fragile Ed.

Bert Fry and Grundy senior develop a nasty case of competitive yokel-itis, which forces the goverment to introduce a protective presumtive cull of the whole village.

TB outbreak at brookfield, to really make it a good week for david. Or possibly foot and mouth scare.

About the bet

All the Archers characters (with the possible exceptions of Jazzer and Matt who are mere outlines) are now essentially female. Listen to David and Brian talking about Siobahn (or any other of the male characters discussing females / family matters) for proof.

However the overtly female characters are modern women so I'd guess that Ruth will be forced to kick right over the traces, just to show that women can be as irresponsible as men. The scriptwriters will also force the kids to be deleriously happy living in a garret with Ruth and Sam and David will stoically accept the position, seeking consolation in his worthy stewardship of the Brookfield land and in his Parish Council work.

He'll probably achieve closure by planting a tree in memory of his happy years with Ruth.

Pity the writers didn't have the b**ls to pursue a similar line with Mike and Clarrie when they had the chance.

A letter in today's Guardian has reminded me of something I'd quite forgotten - and I think it's the reason I've never been too keen on The Archers:

"You extol the Archers (In praise of, November 8). I haven't forgiven them for the "death" of Dick Barton, Special Agent."

What the writer meant is the slot on the radio which they gave to The Archers was the one which had previously been reserved for the exploits of Dick Barton. It was like taking away Doctor Who and replacing it with Come Dancing.

I don't think they have a bull at Brookfield...certainly not a friesian anyway. There may be a hereford. If you use your own bull, after a couple of years you are putting him on his own daughters which is not good breeding policy at all. With AI you can choose the right bull for a particular cow, vary the breeds etc. Of course this is all a load of old bull......

I thought that Sam's farewell address to the Herd was really touching, until that tart Ruth came into the cowshed and broke the magical bond between mand and beasts. God, she's hard.

She should have got Alister to put Sam to sleep (God knows Alister has that effect on me). Instead, poor Sam will now have to rove the airwaves alone, turning up occasionally to beg at the doors of miserable hovels like Start the Week and You and Yours. I don't know where he'll find work - I can't think of any other herd on the air. You can't call walk-on parts in Thomas Hardy serialisations a life can you?

As I write here it's just been on R4 that a listener found Ruth and Sam's failed tryst to be an "anticlimax".

Suggestions for next shocking plotline?

I know my granfer (dairy farmer for about 50years) had an arrangement with 3 farms in the area... they'd all swap their bulls around every other year or so, to strengthen the herds. After several rotations, the bull would end up in the butchers across the road and we'd invariably end up having a large piece of him for Christmas dinner.

That's what REAL farming folk do... don't recall any of these shenannigans going on in the milking parlour.... too much bloody work to do!

Want to know how to make Sid and Jolene go into hysterics? Ask them if you can hold a folk club in The Bull on Saturday night. Bloomin' embarrassing it was. "Saturday night? Saturday night?" they said, and then it was the hysterics. Said they hadn't had such a good laugh in ages and pulled me a pint of Shires for my sense of humour. When they realised I was serious they said they could do Tuesday no problem, or at a push, Thursday. (Sid said if he'd known I was serious at the start he'd have charged me for the pint). David flirted mildly and when confronted with the prospect of physical action, stepped back. Ruth made a profound and repeated emotional committment with a certain prospect of bedroom action before drawing back. The subtext of the plotline seems to be that the envelope for "moral" behaviour for men is much smaller than that for women.

It doesn't seem fair.

AND she had an affair with Debbie's father in fairly recent years. However, I can understand her point of view. In this instance I feel really sorry for Brian who, with all his shortcomings has always been a pretty good father. To take on someone else's children is not an easy thing but he does appear to consider the two step-children as his own. No surprise then, that he should care about little Rory. The whole crux of the matter is that at some point before long, there will be a little boy of, what, five? with no mother. He needs his father. Interesting to see what Debbie's reaction will be.
Do we know if Kate knows about it?

My bet is that, in the end Jennifer will give in and take him

Much as I love the actress who plays Debbie in her real skin, I loathe the Debbie character, and if she's upset, then that makes it all worthwhile in my book.

I don't think people act out of character often. In fact I've been impressed in the past by how3 they manage over 55 years to make people's characters consistent. Lots of people in the other world (ie Not Borsetshire) will suddenly do something unpredicted when something happens that knocks them out of their usual channel. I don't think so Keith. She'd felt threatened by David's 'friendship' with Sophie. He was taking very little notice of her and she was already low on self-esteen, possibly still carrying over from her mastectomy. She's also reaching a 'certain age' where people start to realize that time is creeping on and they aren't as young as they were (sorry about the cliches there!) And there, telling her how wonderful she was, was this hunky cowman. I think it would be in character for almost any woman to succumb. She did so fairly reluctantly and with a lot of wringing of hands, which was totally in character, and even then backed out at the last minute

Terri, for many years "The Archers' Workshop" took place on Sunday morning on the campsite. It used to be a great way to start Sunday. There were, in the early days, probably 20 people at them and they had different names. One year it was called "The Grundys and their opressors". It used to take place on camp Derby at the bottom of the field though later migrated up to Steward's village when camp Derby became sparser. One year there was a shelter between the tents called "The Grace Archer memorial Hall". It bore a sign "No admission after Midnight". We even used to have an Archers' quiz. Should we resurect (How the bloody hell do you spell that??) it?

Is it just me or are the scripts getting more and more trite and stilted? They sound like they're being written by an eldely maiden aunt living in sheltered accomodation in Cheltenham Spa who really needs to get out more. Real people just don't talk like that!

Lots of the characters are made to do things alien to their normal behaviour, in order to further the scripts.
Some of the plot devices are so clunky it makes you wince.

My partner has the idea that Helen will have her baby, and it will turn out the donor sperm was mislabelled, and the baby will be black.
My guess is the death of a big charcter, like Nigel, or Debbie might be finally written off.
I'd like Susan and Linda to run off with Helen, to live in a lesbian menage a trois.

BBC Radio 4 news said there were 'life-changing events' for two of the major characters, Helen and Nigel - which suggests he isn't dead, or it would be life-changing for his family rather than him, what with the death duties they'd have to pay. Maybe he'll be in a wheelchair and they can have lots of 'public information' about 'disability'.

Rob has had an engagement ring made for Helen, and got the size right by borrowing a ring, at random, from her dressing table. When Caroline got engaged a few years back it was the same story.
I am neither married nor engaged, so if someone took one of my rings, the only finger it would be guaranteed NOT to fit would be the ring finger on my left hand.
