Subject: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 15 Aug 03 - 02:31 PM As a means of giving my age away, I will admit to having listened to The Archers almost from the beginning. However at this moment in time I am totally pissed off with this programme. Why are nearly all the male characters wimps and/or pratts? Or jokes!! Why does nothing good ever happen to the Grundys? Why do they drag obvious storylines out for months? What does it have to do with its' tag line "An everyday story of country folk"? It is almost totally irrelevant to todays farming and farmers. Insofar as it reflects any part of a farmers existance, that existance is relevant only to English farmers, and bears little or no relation to the life of a farmer in Scotland, or the north of England. I know that time moves on etc., but this programme is so far outside its' remit that it is in danger of becoming totalty irrelevant. Giok |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 31 Oct 06 - 03:06 AM Not JUST a fictional radio drama! It's the longest running soap in the world. In February it reaches it's 56th birthday. One of the original actors is still in it. Lots of English people have grown up with it from hearing it when their Mum's and Dad's (and grandparents) listened to it. Some of the characters are the great grandchildren of the originals. It's a soap with history! And something of a British institution. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Anne Lister Date: 31 Oct 06 - 04:49 AM There are several American listeners who post on the message board on the BBC site, so we don't need to get too imperialist about it all. They all lynch Linda Snell, to get out of having to do the pantomine again, and for the general greater good. Someone in the complicated triangle surrounding little george kidnaps him. This is not good for the fragile Ed. Bert Fry and Grundy senior develop a nasty case of competitive yokel-itis, which forces the goverment to introduce a protective presumtive cull of the whole village. TB outbreak at brookfield, to really make it a good week for david. Or possibly foot and mouth scare. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: IWTATBM Date: 31 Oct 06 - 03:20 PM I have a confession. I was one of those who damaged Tom's van. There the secret's out. There was a few of us actually. An unholy alliance of animal rights activists and rival burger vendors. We all hid behind a bush and giggled as Tom was raving - he looked so silly with his shirt half tucked in half out. Damn that meddling Crawford. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: IWTATBM Date: 31 Oct 06 - 04:20 PM Anyway I was in The Bull this afternoon when Joe starts on me about the ghost of Willow Farm. "Joe", I says, "Give it a rest. I've just come in for a quiet pint and I've got you in one ear and Linda in the other, trying to get me to play Grumpy in the panto. I'm just not interested Joe, go and get your pigs in" (little does he know me and a mate will be setting them free later in the week tee-hee). "Have you finished your chores for the day IWTATBM?" says Joe. "What chores", says I?" "A pint of Shires" says Joe. Fell for that old one. He's a crafty old devil that Joe Grundy, always strutting around the village with a microphone in his hand and a story in the other. Why do they all have microphones around here? So, I buys him a pint and, oh, I've got to go 'cos I've just seen David and I want to chat to him about a rumour that Susan's spreading. Can't say any more, said too much already. They've never given me a microphone. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 02 Nov 06 - 11:38 AM Are Ladbrokes giving odds on Ruth buggering off with Sam? Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 02 Nov 06 - 03:00 PM But did the ring fit? And if so, how did Ian know what size to get? Did he borrow a ring from Adam's dressing table, like Oliver did from Caroline's? And how come Caroline's fingers are all the same size? My fingers are all different sizes. If someone borrowed one of my rings at random, chances are it would fit ONE of my fingers, but almost certainly not my ring finger as, at the moment, I am neither married nor engaged. I am puzzled. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 03 Nov 06 - 03:42 AM About the bet All the Archers characters (with the possible exceptions of Jazzer and Matt who are mere outlines) are now essentially female. Listen to David and Brian talking about Siobahn (or any other of the male characters discussing females / family matters) for proof. However the overtly female characters are modern women so I'd guess that Ruth will be forced to kick right over the traces, just to show that women can be as irresponsible as men. The scriptwriters will also force the kids to be deleriously happy living in a garret with Ruth and Sam and David will stoically accept the position, seeking consolation in his worthy stewardship of the Brookfield land and in his Parish Council work. He'll probably achieve closure by planting a tree in memory of his happy years with Ruth. Pity the writers didn't have the b**ls to pursue a similar line with Mike and Clarrie when they had the chance. AB |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: IWTATBM Date: 05 Nov 06 - 06:42 AM Hi there. Can't speak too loud. Am addressing you from behind a bush at the moment, 'cos I've just seen Snelly. Seems she doesn't want me for a dwarf now but wants me to work 'behind the scenes' ("such an important job IWTATBM, perfect for you"). Well I'm not going to be Brian's lackey for no one and am going to tell her straight. Only I'm a bit busy at the moment, you understand. Anyway here she comes. Sshhhhh |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 05 Nov 06 - 07:00 AM You guys are taking your eyes off the ball Ruth's committed to Oxford Sam's only a whisker away from pulling it off Of course Dave's projected meeting with Sophie on 25 Nov is an opportunity for a counter-blow.... Go for it Ruth |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 05 Nov 06 - 08:54 AM Is this an under the counter blow? I think we should be told. Nah, the aristocracy don't do that sort of thing do they? G. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 05 Nov 06 - 01:56 PM Only under certain conditions for example no more than three servants in the room Is Sophie an aristo? On reflection, she's lusty enough to qualify. Dave's as common as muck |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: terrier Date: 05 Nov 06 - 05:09 PM Now I am sure this is a scam and THE ARCHERS is just a figment of peoples imagination. I was in the Bull on the 4th NOV and IWTATBM was NOT there. The only people in that night were Jolene (of the deep sexy drawl), myself and a strange translucent apparition of a little drummer boy. Also, I believe that stRUTH and Sam have somehow passed over to the 'other side' because on the BEEB trailers of the ARCHERS (who do NOT exist)their voices now seem to have aquired an unearthly echo-y timbre. Why is there a man in a white coat with his hand on my shoulder.........Get away, it's not me you want........ |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: IWTATBM Date: 05 Nov 06 - 05:53 PM Not a mention. NOT A MENTION. Well hardly, one little line at the bottom of the back page of the Echo, "…and the winner of the modern tractor ploughing competition was IWTATBM." And old 'Fry-up' (he hates being called that), gets a half-page photo for driving a Dinky toy. Can you believe it? Still, did you see the photo? Caught mid cough with his tongue sticking out - silly old duffer. I don't know why they don't get rid of the engine on them old Fergies and just put in a set of peddles. Oh, and I saw old llama bum and told her straight about the panto, "I'm just not interested Linda, get it?" I said. Then she told me straight and now I'm third assistant backstage director. You know I'm glad I discovered this site. Didn't know why I was always one of the last to know the gossip in the village. And I see you're all using aliases, very wise. I suppose I should have done that, but what the hell, I'm used to taking stick; it's not easy being the only vegetarian in the village. And Terrier, I was in the pub, but took a sharp exit when you waltzed in, on the scrounge as usual. Hang on, someone's shouting me… "You what Bert?.... Oh, a pint of Shires please. You're a true gentlemen me old friend, I've always said so." Anyway, got to go. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Folkiedave Date: 06 Nov 06 - 02:51 PM Well, it won't be the first affair in the Archers and I don't suppose it will be the last. Quite an adulterous lot when you think about it.....in fact when I do think about it there is a lot of it about........... |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 10 Nov 06 - 07:37 AM A letter in today's Guardian has reminded me of something I'd quite forgotten - and I think it's the reason I've never been too keen on The Archers: "You extol the Archers (In praise of, November 8). I haven't forgiven them for the "death" of Dick Barton, Special Agent." What the writer meant is the slot on the radio which they gave to The Archers was the one which had previously been reserved for the exploits of Dick Barton. It was like taking away Doctor Who and replacing it with Come Dancing. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 10 Nov 06 - 11:53 AM Good grief Topsie! That question really asks for a naughty answer! I don't think they have a bull at Brookfield...certainly not a friesian anyway. There may be a hereford. If you use your own bull, after a couple of years you are putting him on his own daughters which is not good breeding policy at all. With AI you can choose the right bull for a particular cow, vary the breeds etc. Of course this is all a load of old bull...... Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 11 Nov 06 - 03:30 AM I thought that Sam's farewell address to the Herd was really touching, until that tart Ruth came into the cowshed and broke the magical bond between mand and beasts. God, she's hard. She should have got Alister to put Sam to sleep (God knows Alister has that effect on me). Instead, poor Sam will now have to rove the airwaves alone, turning up occasionally to beg at the doors of miserable hovels like Start the Week and You and Yours. I don't know where he'll find work - I can't think of any other herd on the air. You can't call walk-on parts in Thomas Hardy serialisations a life can you? As I write here it's just been on R4 that a listener found Ruth and Sam's failed tryst to be an "anticlimax". Suggestions for next shocking plotline? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Liz the Squeak Date: 11 Nov 06 - 03:41 AM I know my granfer (dairy farmer for about 50years) had an arrangement with 3 farms in the area... they'd all swap their bulls around every other year or so, to strengthen the herds. After several rotations, the bull would end up in the butchers across the road and we'd invariably end up having a large piece of him for Christmas dinner. That's what REAL farming folk do... don't recall any of these shenannigans going on in the milking parlour.... too much bloody work to do! LTS |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 11 Nov 06 - 08:04 AM So that's what he wanted to do to Ruth! She had a lucky escape then if you ask me. Wye aye wor lass, fancy a Kwikfit? That's just the sort of uncouth chat up line you'd expect from someone of an agricultural bovine background. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 11 Nov 06 - 08:50 AM OI!!!!!!! See you Giok!! There are some sof..sopisc....sophisticated, cultured people of bovine agricultural background I'll have you know. Yeah, you're right Liz, but walking the bulls round the farms as they used to do would these days mean he'd be too knackered to serve the cows since dairy farms are now few and far between. Shenanigans in the cowshed......ah, those were the days! I was a young, free, single inseminator going round a large number of farms where young farmers' sons and cowmen were stuck without female company most of the time......my ideal job, it were.... Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 23 Nov 06 - 11:36 AM You're right about Will picking up Tom's bad habits of being a boring and smug knowall so I suppose it's only a matter of time before he goes to air singing Tom's song. Next Saturday's cool. Lets go for it (by the way its also the night of Sophie's do. She might drop in the Bull looking fo Dave so we could set her right about Ruth etc) As I recall Tony used to have a hankering for folk music - wasn't he groupie to a singer called Allan in the 60's? Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: IWTATBM Date: 23 Nov 06 - 02:29 PM Want to know how to make Sid and Jolene go into hysterics? Ask them if you can hold a folk club in The Bull on Saturday night. Bloomin' embarrassing it was. "Saturday night? Saturday night?" they said, and then it was the hysterics. Said they hadn't had such a good laugh in ages and pulled me a pint of Shires for my sense of humour. When they realised I was serious they said they could do Tuesday no problem, or at a push, Thursday. (Sid said if he'd known I was serious at the start he'd have charged me for the pint). Can you manage any of these dates MBSLynne? If so perhaps we could get a list of Mudcat performers prepared to do a gig on the cheap (very cheap) to get us started. I think Ann Lister's posted on this thread, so perhaps we could sweet talk her into doing the gig for free? When we gets a few names we could put a flyer together. What do you think? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Folkiedave Date: 23 Nov 06 - 03:46 PM Sounds like a good idea to me. The perfect bill for me would include someone with a sense of humour (Vin Garbutt, Les Barker), and up and coming group (Devil's Interval, Kerfufffle) A top celtic band, (Croab Ruah, Lunasa) and a solo artist who could do the Village pump and similar songs. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 23 Nov 06 - 03:51 PM Weren't there some morris men in Loxley Barret a few years back? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 24 Nov 06 - 03:10 AM Yeah, sounds good to me. Thursdays are not bad, except they clash with our Quarter session. Still, that's only once every three months. We need some singers/session nights as well as guests though. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 25 Nov 06 - 03:41 AM A few suggestions - assuming that some cast members are competent instrumentalists "Man of constant sorrow" for David or Tony? "D-i-v-o-r-c-e" for Ruth? "Hate to the Wedding" for Adam "Speed the plough" for Bert "The disappointed coquette" for Emma "The unfortunate rake" for Ed "The maid behind the bar" for Jolene or "the drunken landlady" |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 25 Nov 06 - 04:43 AM And there's Buttercup Joe, of course. And 'The Cow' could sing Hey Diddle Diddle. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 28 Nov 06 - 03:28 AM Sorry to be pedantic Ancient Briton...Adam's natural father was Paddy Redmond. The Macey comes from Roger Travers-Macey, Jennifer's first husband and Debbie's father. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 28 Nov 06 - 09:21 AM I've never seen Fallon, but if I were a fella I'd fancy her voice. She sounds like that rabbit on the Cadbury's caramel ads Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Elfcall Date: 30 Nov 06 - 06:59 AM Any one seen the cartoon in this week's Private Eye .. The Archer's new theme is 'Rumpy Pumpy Rumpy Pum Rumpy Pumpy Rum Pum'. Elf |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Folkiedave Date: 30 Nov 06 - 11:27 AM And there was a cartoon in the previous edition with the sounds of love-making coming from the cowshed. "Moo! Ahhhh! Moo! Ahhhh! Mooo Ahhhh........." However the sounds of rumpty tumpty in the Archers are not new.......Given a couple of days and a few reference books I could probably list them all. We used to mek us own fun in them days. Dave |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 30 Nov 06 - 02:23 PM Remember Nigel's "Cuckoo" as he searched the house for Shula and ended up in Phil and Jill's room? Remember Shula and Simon whatsisname? John and Sharon? Jennifer and Roger (on his reappearance in the area, not when they were married) etc etc Btw, what do we think the solution is to the current Brookfield impasse? I think Ruth should up sticks and take the kids to her mother's for Christmas telling David she's had enough and if that's how he wants it....He'd soon climb down off his high horse. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Nov 06 - 02:27 PM He's not the one who cuddled in the cowshed, or even considered adultery, he's the one who turned it down when it was offered to him on a plate! Giok Stay in the saddle David! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 30 Nov 06 - 02:31 PM Whereupon David would get particularly friendly with 'Mrs Whoeveritwas' that he was arranging to deliver two boxes of who knows what to the other day on the telephone. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Folkiedave Date: 30 Nov 06 - 02:33 PM he's the one who turned it down when it was offered to him on a plate! Well, he was having intimate conversations with Sophie, glamorous get-togethers to which Ruth was invited as an afterthought. And let us not forget the trigger that finally sent her into the arms of Sam....or not as it happens. And I know her type, that Sophie, she would carry on trying to seduce David until he finally succmbed, lucky sod....... We used to mek us own fun in them days. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Nov 06 - 03:12 PM This just typical, a man is inconsiderate, and by way of revenge it is all right for a woman to do absolutely anything ! Yes let's have sexual equality, let's stop women dominating men, and while we're at it, annexing the moral high ground even when they're in the wrong! Giok I'll get me coat! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Noreen Date: 30 Nov 06 - 08:51 PM Just say what you feel, Giok, don't hold back... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 01 Dec 06 - 03:00 AM But in the end she didn't actually go through with it, so she hasn't really done much more than David. Like him, she turned it down when it was offered on a plate Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 01 Dec 06 - 03:32 AM David flirted mildly and when confronted with the prospect of physical action, stepped back. Ruth made a profound and repeated emotional committment with a certain prospect of bedroom action before drawing back. David enjoyed a single stolen kiss, whilst Sam's grubby prints are goodness knows where. No real equivalence there I'm afraid. The subtext of the plotline seems to be that the envelope for "moral" behaviour for men is much smaller than that for women. It doesn't seem fair. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST Date: 01 Dec 06 - 03:33 AM David should kick Ruth out, the only questions that arrise are haw hard and how far!!!!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 01 Dec 06 - 05:01 AM Where Ruth went wrong was in wallowing in self-pity instead of getting on with the life she chose - not so promising for future storylines though. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Michael Date: 01 Dec 06 - 07:21 AM On the Helen and Ross story; Helen isn't like that, She wouldn't have been that stupid, I sometimes wonder if the the current script writers (at any given time) ever listend to the programme. Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Folkiedave Date: 01 Dec 06 - 07:57 AM She would have been that stupid, IMHO it is just like her!! Scriptwriters? What do you mean scriptwriters? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 01 Dec 06 - 08:21 AM I agree, it's just like Helen. She's a pain in the bum who wallows in self pity if anything doesn't go her way. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 01 Dec 06 - 09:01 AM Lots of pity for Ruth then, who kissed and cuddled in the cowshed with a man not her husband, and none for Helen who is free agent, and has been taken advantage of by a known lothario! I smell female double standards! Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 01 Dec 06 - 02:04 PM I sympathise with her being taken advantage of but I still think she's a humouless, self-pitying bitch. :-) Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, ... Date: 01 Dec 06 - 03:50 PM which one, Lynne, Helen or Ruth (or both)? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 02 Dec 06 - 03:23 AM My tractor's on your lawn, Guest. Leave Lynne alone or I'll harrow your turnips. (this is how rural feuds really start) Come to Ambridge and we'll sort it out man to man outside the Bull (although as this is an Archer's thread you're probably a girl anyway). People like you just can't see that it's a waste of time trashing imaginary characters. Stick to picking on Helen or Ruth..... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Dec 06 - 04:25 AM It looks to me like feuds start with misread or badly punctuated posts AB, as "Guest,..." is so obviously fond of commas, he/she appears to have put an extraneous one in after the word one in their post. However he/she goes on to say both which can only mean that he/she meant 2 people i.e. Helen and Ruth. So put your tractor away like a good boy, and go and hoe yer turmits! Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, ... Date: 02 Dec 06 - 04:38 AM Thanks Giok. I/me did in fact put in too many commas. But no one (apart from Ancient Briton, apparently) could possibly think I was applying that description to Lynne. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 02 Dec 06 - 05:19 AM Helen, not Ruth. I've never liked Helen she was a miserable little cow in her teens as well. What is called "White and spiteful" by the older people around here. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Dec 06 - 05:31 AM Helen Archer Pretty lady, and a compatriot of El Greko's too, by the look of things! Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 02 Dec 06 - 05:55 AM Helen looks just as I expected, unlike Fallon, who is much more 'full of life' on my radio. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 02 Dec 06 - 03:39 PM So what does Jazzer look like? Or will I be disappointed? I imagine him to be shortish, stocky with curly black hair and blue eyes Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 02 Dec 06 - 03:45 PM Hah! I was wrong! He's six feet tall and has glass eyes 'cos he's blind!! Not really very close Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Skipjack K8 Date: 02 Dec 06 - 04:45 PM Well, Lynne, thanks for that, turns out old Jazzer is a Stomach Steinway Man! I must try some K. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 15 Dec 06 - 05:06 AM Well the much trailed gay wedding on the Archers last night, left no cliche untouched. I laughed my way through almost the entire episode. Vanessa Whitburn has reduced the programme to a vehicle for her own personal agendas, that's my opinion. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 15 Dec 06 - 06:13 AM Maybe not just her own agenda - I believe Hayley may be a victim of a government-sponsored clamydia awareness campaign. (But then, The Archers began as a medium for government-sponsored awareness campaigns aimed at 'countryfolk', so we shouldn't be too surprised.) |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 15 Dec 06 - 09:51 AM Well I must say RAT-W and I shared the sick-bucket during the wedding, but I did enjoy the episode. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Gervase Date: 15 Dec 06 - 03:33 PM Not a dry leg in the house! I must confess, though, that when I saw the photo of Adamanian in the Guardian i almost choked on my toast - two uglier coves it would be hard to picture. Truly the love that dare not show its face. In our household we're taking bets on whether Helen's Tenerife shagfest will be the harbinger for a story line on chlamydia (why isn't one of Lynda snell's god-daughters cslled that?), AIDS or pregnancy. And, if it's the latter, if Helen will hand the sprog over to Hailey. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 15 Dec 06 - 03:39 PM Sorry for the lapse I've been away hedge laying. I've run out of TVO so the tractor stays where it is. Suburban sopisticates who can't punctuate really bring out the beast in me. Which reminds me that there's another more rural sexual pastime that Vanessa's yet to add to the Archers mix......will Ed start getting dewy-eyed about Daisy the Jersey? It's only a matter of time... Someone should alert the RSPCA in time to prevent another radio atrocity. AB |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 16 Dec 06 - 07:08 AM Hmmm...one of the few things that hasn't been on the Archers in it's 55 year history. You're right Gervase...I saw the photo of AdamandIan in the Radio Times. I had seen Adam before so he was no surprise but Ian was so totally unlike his voice I could hardly believe it. He looks something like Alexi Sale!! So who's up for a Christmas sing in the Bull as a preliminary to the Folk Club? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Dec 06 - 07:59 AM Sid Perks is too bloody miserable, anyway I don't suppose he has a PEL in place. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST,Ancient Briton Date: 16 Dec 06 - 12:33 PM The Bull must be ok as Fallon has promoted a number of rock evenings there. How about a ceilidh - our band would do it for a small consideration. We'll also back Jolene in a little half-time cameo spot. AB |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 16 Dec 06 - 01:39 PM I was wondering which was Adam and which was Ian (not having your advantage, Lynne). And I suppose Adam must be pushing forty, so we can't expect a young Adonis. Maybe Ian has been sampling too much of his own cooking. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 17 Dec 06 - 06:12 AM Tell you what...let's talk to Lillian! She'll be in it if we tell her it will be a laugh and she'll get right up Jolene's nose by arranging it whether they say so or not! Adam will be 40 next June. I know some pretty gorgeous guys of 39 or so! Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: sian, west wales Date: 13 Feb 07 - 12:57 PM OK - someone here is gonna want t' be caught red-handed. sian |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 16 Apr 07 - 04:16 AM So would YOU take on Rory? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Apr 07 - 04:30 AM Difficult one, lad should be with his Dad if possible, but I can understand Jennifer's angst too, although for a lady with her history, wringing her hands about what the neighbours will think is a bit hypocritical. She also claims to be worried about what her ghastly spoilt brat Alice will think. Well from what I have heard so far, her response would be 'Cool', as that's about the sum total of her conversation. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Folkiedave Date: 16 Apr 07 - 04:31 AM It´s the hypocrisy of Jennifer "four children by three different fathers" Aldridge making out she is some sort of rural lairdette when in fact she is little better than a Trollope |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Apr 07 - 04:46 AM Doesn't she live near Barchester Towers? G ¦¬] |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 16 Apr 07 - 05:47 AM AND she had an affair with Debbie's father in fairly recent years. However, I can understand her point of view. In this instance I feel really sorry for Brian who, with all his shortcomings has always been a pretty good father. To take on someone else's children is not an easy thing but he does appear to consider the two step-children as his own. No surprise then, that he should care about little Rory. The whole crux of the matter is that at some point before long, there will be a little boy of, what, five? with no mother. He needs his father. Interesting to see what Debbie's reaction will be. Do we know if Kate knows about it? My bet is that, in the end Jennifer will give in and take him Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Apr 07 - 06:00 AM Much as I love the actress who plays Debbie in her real skin, I loathe the Debbie character, and if she's upset, then that makes it all worthwhile in my book. Kate is another waste of space, and South Africa's not far enough away for her, even the Moon's not far enough! I do though agree that somehow Rory will end up in Ambridge, maybe Roy and Hayley will be paid to adopt him? Giok G. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: sian, west wales Date: 16 Apr 07 - 06:09 AM Na, I think Adam and Ian should adopt him. It's very weird - feeling sorry for Brian, of all people. I'm with MBSL: Jennifer will fold. sian |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Apr 07 - 06:10 AM I thought for a minute that was a fake Sir j0hn, then I spotted the deliberate mistake. Hello John, how's the taxi trade? G. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Apr 07 - 06:12 AM Adam and Ian were the ones I thought of first funnily enough, but although Adam started feeling sorry for Brian in an episode the other night, do you think he hates Debbie enough to take on Rory just to upset her? G ¦¬] |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Anne Lister Date: 16 Apr 07 - 06:36 AM I think Lizzie and Nigel will adopt the little scrap. Personally (and surprisingly, as I generally think she's a pain) I'm with Jennifer on this one - can't see she has any responsibility at all for Brian's by-blows. Brian took her on knowing her history and the score, so his attitude to her kids is of course different. Anne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Michael Date: 16 Apr 07 - 07:07 AM Just been reading the synopsis; it's spelt 'Ruari' Mike |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 16 Apr 07 - 08:16 AM Yes, I thought it would be spelled the Irish way but couldn't work out how that went. No Jennifer has no responsibilty for him at all, but Brian does. That's what makes it so difficult. And responsibilty apart, this is a little boy with no mother. He needs family. Actually I like Brian. With him you know exactly what you're getting. And I agree with Giok, Debbie is a pain. Not half so much of a pain as Adam though. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 16 Apr 07 - 08:29 AM A pain in the arse Lynne? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Morticia Date: 16 Apr 07 - 08:40 AM I just wish Jennifer and Brian would stop angsting all over the place. Personally I can't understand why Siobhan would push it further when Jennifer was so blunt with her, I wouldn't chance my child to her under these circumstances. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 16 Apr 07 - 09:19 AM Well not to me Giok...maybe to you... Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 16 Apr 07 - 09:24 AM Perhaps Ruary could replace Ed's lost "son".? |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: terrier Date: 16 Apr 07 - 04:40 PM Oh Lizzie, I feel so guilty about how I treated poor Siobhan, we'll just have to adopt poor little Ruary now ! Now, now, Nigel, we mustn't get involved...... 'scuse me while I go and eat some grass...... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Ruth Archer Date: 16 Apr 07 - 07:17 PM I reckon it's Lizzie and Nigel who'll end up with him. This is, of course, a set-up for what may be the most slow-burning storyline in soap history: who gets the farm when Brian - well - buys the farm. Answer in 2032? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: terrier Date: 16 Apr 07 - 08:11 PM Struth, Ruth, great minds an' all that. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 17 Apr 07 - 07:38 AM If Nigel and Elizabeth adopt him he could be up for inheriting Lower Loxley as well as Brookfield [just have to arrange for Lily and Freddy to drown in the lake]. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST Date: 17 Apr 07 - 07:50 AM Ian and Adam would be a very good solution though Lizzie and Nigel are the most likely adopters. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 17 Apr 07 - 08:08 AM The script writers would have to get rid of an awful lot of other heirs for him to inherit Brookfield! It could be the theme for a good disaster folk song....mass deaths of David, Ruth, their three children, Shula, Kenton, Lizzie and their children, not to mention Tony, his kids, Jennifer and her kids and her kids' kids..... Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 17 Apr 07 - 08:40 AM Oops! Sorree, I got my farms muddled - I meant Home Farm, not Brookfield. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Folkiedave Date: 17 Apr 07 - 10:40 AM The script writers would have to get rid of an awful lot of other heirs for him to inherit Brookfield! It could be the theme for a good disaster folk song....mass deaths of David, Ruth, their three children, Shula, Kenton, Lizzie and their children, not to mention Tony, his kids, Jennifer and her kids and her kids' kids..... Of course those older Archers fans will remember something similar in a Tony Hancock script called "The Bowmen" - when as they all came walking across a field towards him (Hancock) an ancient quarry opened up and they all fell in.............as my memory has it. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: terrier Date: 17 Apr 07 - 08:25 PM I think maybee an ancient quarry has opened up and the scriptwriters are about to fall in! Yawn!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 18 Apr 07 - 03:30 AM I think that over the last five years or so the scriptwriters have come up with some brilliant stories. At times I've been hardly able to wait for the next installment. They must be pretty good or why are we a)listening to it and b) spending time discussing it. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 18 Apr 07 - 04:22 AM Thing is, that to pull off these stories Lynne, it is often necessary for people to act totally out of character, which is what annoys me. Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, Topsie Date: 18 Apr 07 - 05:25 AM What worries me is that Nigel was getting his wine made by the nasty man who was causing Tom problems with his sausage van last year, and now the same chap seems to be advising Ruth and David about their new hedge. OK, I know he is appearing under different names, but I reckon they are just pseudonyms. I wouldn't trust him with my wine. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 18 Apr 07 - 05:33 AM And I think they all sound like Kenton..... I don't think people act out of character often. In fact I've been impressed in the past by how3 they manage over 55 years to make people's characters consistent. Lots of people in the other world (ie Not Borsetshire) will suddenly do something unpredicted when something happens that knocks them out of their usual channel. Who were you thinking of in particualr Giok? Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Keith A of Hertford Date: 18 Apr 07 - 05:46 AM Ruth was an unlikely candidate for a fling with the cowman. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 18 Apr 07 - 07:08 AM I don't think so Keith. She'd felt threatened by David's 'friendship' with Sophie. He was taking very little notice of her and she was already low on self-esteen, possibly still carrying over from her mastectomy. She's also reaching a 'certain age' where people start to realize that time is creeping on and they aren't as young as they were (sorry about the cliches there!) And there, telling her how wonderful she was, was this hunky cowman. I think it would be in character for almost any woman to succumb. She did so fairly reluctantly and with a lot of wringing of hands, which was totally in character, and even then backed out at the last minute Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Herga Kitty Date: 04 May 07 - 02:30 PM Sian - the accent's meant to be Dublin, not Belfast! It's Ian the chef who comes from the north, and I don't think Ruairi is his child.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Morticia Date: 04 May 07 - 02:43 PM It sounded vaguely like a Dublin accent..but of course, the child wasn't brought up exclusively there, was he? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 05 May 07 - 05:26 AM No, he has mostly been brought up in Germany hasn't he, so his accent would reflect that. Any Irish presumably comes just from his mother which is not the same as learning it from other kids and people around you Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Ruth Archer Date: 05 May 07 - 06:24 AM I thought his accent was well dodgy, too. It's interesting that Jennifer pronounces Ruairi's name quite closely to its Irish spelling...almost as though she's reading it from a script or something. Everyone else just calls him Rory. Wonder if he's ginger? |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 14 Jul 07 - 10:27 AM Well I'm afraid that in our neck of the woods if there is garden rubbish and builder's rubble fly tipped, it is usually travellers sadly. They really should get their act together. In the Archers the only other person we know who is doing that sort of work apart from Eddie Grundy, is Robert Snell. Now there IS a thought! Giok |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 14 Jul 07 - 02:02 PM oooh! It could be couldn't it? For once we can be sure it's not Eddie. No farmer would do that. Where I am it tends to be 'ordinary peope' who do the fly tipping. The same ones who leave their old mattresses, settees etc on the side of the road. You know, the ones who think that the countryside is their own personal rubbish dump. Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Ruth Archer Date: 15 Jul 07 - 10:32 AM Hurrah! Let Alice join up! Spoilt, self-centered little madam. I bet they don't have ponies in Iraq. I remember my friends having a load of rubbish fly-tipped onto their farm, including a sofa, some old carpet and a number of black bags. Well, they opened up the black bags, and lo and behold, found a load of post addressed to a house in the neighbouring village. They loaded all the stuff into a trailer, drove it to the house, and dumped it on the drive. As there was never any comeback from the offenders, I guess they got the message. |

Hopefully she'll take bloody Spearmint with her. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 17 Jul 07 - 03:18 AM Yes Ruth, that was my thought too, though it was just the one fling, where Brian has been consistently unfaithful most of their married life. Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Ruth Archer Date: 17 Jul 07 - 03:00 PM But Lynne, she's not exactly the most conventional woman to be holding up the values of the county set: four kids, three different fathers...and her first child born out of wedlock, to the cowman (ooooh nooooo!)...her mortification over what the village would think about Ruaridh coming to live with them seemed a touch misplaced. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Ruth Archer Date: 17 Jul 07 - 04:30 PM What, because the editor is a woman? Last tome I checked, Agrcultural Story Editor Graham Harvey was a bloke. Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 17 Jul 07 - 04:38 PM Graham Harvey only checks the veracity of the farming bits, he doesn't write the scripts. G |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: greg stephens Date: 30 Jul 07 - 12:27 PM Due to the puerile storylines we are getting these days, I imagine they have hilariously tipped ten tons of shite into the wrong person's garden. Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Jul 07 - 12:48 PM I expect Brian wants a Nanny for Ruaridh in order to get another bit on the side. Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: MBSLynne Date: 31 Jul 07 - 06:25 AM Terri, for many years "The Archers' Workshop" took place on Sunday morning on the campsite. It used to be a great way to start Sunday. There were, in the early days, probably 20 people at them and they had different names. One year it was called "The Grundys and their opressors". It used to take place on camp Derby at the bottom of the field though later migrated up to Steward's village when camp Derby became sparser. One year there was a shelter between the tents called "The Grace Archer memorial Hall". It bore a sign "No admission after Midnight". We even used to have an Archers' quiz. Should we resurect (How the bloody hell do you spell that??) it? Love Lynne |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: greg stephens Date: 03 Jul 09 - 10:30 AM All a load of bollocks these stories, they are invented by Vanessa Whitburn. Actually Matt and Lilian are fine, going through a spot of bother but taking it on the chin, as are the rest of the cast, Shula still goes to church, Mike's new lady is getting on extremely well with Brenda, Jazzer is still using his own accent instead of the recently added cail-yardery, and Brian is not actually at all curious about what he feels about the rest of the inhabitatants feelings about their feelings about other peoples' feelings. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: theleveller Date: 26 Mar 10 - 08:44 AM Is it just me or are the scripts getting more and more trite and stilted? Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 26 Mar 10 - 01:54 PM Lots of the characters are made to do things alien to their normal behaviour, in order to further the scripts. Some of the plot devices are so clunky it makes you wince. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, topsie Date: 02 Jan 11 - 08:50 AM The trailers are promising something spectacular this evening - "Ambridge will never be the same again . . ." Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 02 Jan 11 - 09:52 AM My partner has the idea that Helen will have her baby, and it will turn out the donor sperm was mislabelled, and the baby will be black. My guess is the death of a big charcter, like Nigel, or Debbie might be finally written off. I'd like Susan and Linda to run off with Helen, to live in a lesbian menage a trois. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, topsie Date: 02 Jan 11 - 05:21 PM BBC Radio 4 news said there were 'life-changing events' for two of the major characters, Helen and Nigel - which suggests he isn't dead, or it would be life-changing for his family rather than him, what with the death duties they'd have to pay. Maybe he'll be in a wheelchair and they can have lots of 'public information' about 'disability'. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Morticia Date: 03 Jan 11 - 02:13 PM blimey, they really did kill him off..... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Skipjack K8 Date: 09 Dec 11 - 10:06 AM Now we're limbering up for the first anniversary of Nigel's ill-advised teeter along the ridge tiles, I thought it was high time this gem was returned to the top of the charts. Wasn't that a storming performance by Sharern, mother of Koyloi and the yet-to-be-unveiled Rich the other night? Quite how Koyloi turned out to be such a charming young lady is a mystery, spawned from loins of aggravated-manslaughterer Cloive Horrobin, but we'll give that to the nurture-over-nature brigade and the steady stepfatherhood of the equally-yet-to-be-unveiled Eamon. And just while I'm getting a year's worth of Ambridge conspiracy theories off me chest, who agrees with me that the Bridge Farm salmonella disaster was in fact caused by Sewzerne, and not that poor 'dirty woman' Clarroi? Another sleeper, that one, mark my words.... |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Edthefolkie Date: 21 Dec 11 - 04:11 PM Higgs got a job as a bosun on the Pequod and learned to sing shanties. Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 05 Mar 12 - 05:02 PM Yes indeed, I noticed it was KR, although I don't know the song, I recognised the voice. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Bainbo Date: 05 Mar 12 - 05:20 PM So is Tom about to be "outed" as a folkie? Has there been any hint of this in the past? (I'm an irregular listener). In fact, the only other Ambridge folkie I recall (if you don't count Eddie and Jolene's country music) was also a Tom - Tom Forrest. Coincdence? Or is there a secret agenda here? |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 05 Mar 12 - 05:32 PM Yup, the actor was called Bob Arnold, and he made at least one recording, where he was backed by The Yetties, in about 1972 |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Bainbo Date: 25 Jul 12 - 11:05 AM Kathryn Tickell unmistakeably piping in the background of this afternoon's episode, which will have been a repeat of last night's. I was only half-listening - sounded like it was set at a village fair or something. Was Ms Tickell actually supposed to have been there, or were they playing a record through the PA? It wasn'r just someone who sounded like her - it was definitley her. |

It'll either be a Down syndrome or miscarriage storyline I imagine, since we can't have any straightforward happy stories any more on the Archers. I do think the writing has improved in the last couple of weeks- have they got rid of the new writers who wrote such out-of-character rubbish recently? |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: John MacKenzie Date: 11 Aug 12 - 04:13 AM I sort of think of the BBC editorial staff as being in the same league as facebook. When it comes to listening to the punters! No BBC producer, or even director, has ever admitted they might have been wrong, when asked onto Feedback on Radio4, to answer criticism from listeners. Self justification, and Auntie knows best, seem to me the order of the day. |

Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Herga Kitty Date: 28 Aug 12 - 08:40 AM Rusty Dobro - I reckon the singer was probably Tom Forrest, played by Bob Arnold, who grew up in Oxfordshire and was heard singing quite a few times (including "The Village Pump")over the years. Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, topsie Date: 12 Nov 13 - 09:09 AM A couple more predictions: 1. Kirstie decides she can't bring herself to play Maid Marian and is replaced by . . . Helen, who plays it so convincingly that it causes trouble between Rob and Jess. 2. (Maybe not just yet though) Ian reveals that he is Henry's father. |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: GUEST, topsie Date: 08 Jun 14 - 06:40 AM Do all the women in Ambridge have fingers that are all the same size? Rob has had an engagement ring made for Helen, and got the size right by borrowing a ring, at random, from her dressing table. When Caroline got engaged a few years back it was the same story. I am neither married nor engaged, so if someone took one of my rings, the only finger it would be guaranteed NOT to fit would be the ring finger on my left hand. PS The first prediction above was wrong - but I'm still holding out for the second. |

I think that the Tony/Pat/Tom/Helen axis should tell Titchener to sling his hook, otherwise they'll get him for abuse. There are legal precedents. Or maybe Rob will lose it and go for a kidnap. Nah. C'mon, Justin. Sack the bugger before he's even started! Of course, I hope that any of you who actually listen will keep me updated, as I clearly don't follow it... |
Subject: RE: BS: The Archers UK Soap From: Morticia Date: 17 Sep 16 - 09:38 AM I kind of saw the Kirstie/ Tom thing coming ( excuse the pun), well, didn't we all but not sure it's very convincing. And that's two couples doing the 'friends with benefits' thing. Oh Archers, how modern you are becoming, totally down with the kids. And yes certainly I will keep you appraised of incidents, Steve, although I hardly ever listen to it myself either. |
