Subject: RE: Young Scottish Folkies?! From: MairSea Date: 10 Sep 03 - 11:49 AM Sorry, have just caught this thread. I was up in Glasgow at the Cafe Source with my better half meeting my lifetime pal Moira on Wed 27/8. There were some lovely singers there and some very good songs. Didn't get in on the singaround as it seemed to be quite a closed circle and being new to the club didn't want to be 'pushy'. Down here the hosts/organisers ask around if there are other singers/performers in the room. Seemed to hit other tables but not ours! Still had a great night and would recommend it as a good gathering. Sorry about the 'late addition'! |
Subject: RE: Young Scottish Folkies?! From: Scabby Douglas Date: 10 Sep 03 - 08:02 PM MairSea... sorry it came across that way. The truth is that there are not really any organisers/hosts as such. Tom Laurie, is sort of the "headmaster" when he's there, but when he's not, whowever's feeling bossy enough takes over, just to start things running. As you saw we run in a fairly regular singaround style, but new people turn up all the time. We're always delighted to see anyone who wants to contribute, but some weeks, there are up to maybe 20 singers, or players looking to participate. It can be tricky trying to fit everyone in. It's not a club in any form.. folk just appear as they see fit. Also, there are some weeks where Tom has spent a lot of time trying to cajole people to sing. He's more persistent than I am ( on the odd occasion when he's elsewhere and I usurp "control"). If one has to spend more than 4-5 minutes persuading someone to sing, it can really disrupt the flow of the evening. But I take your point. I shall endeavour in future to make sure that whoever's directing the flow offers the floor to anyone not sitting inthe immediate singing circle. Glad you enjoyed the singing. And it was nice to meet Leo this evening. Fine voice, nice songs. |
