When Jasper Carrott was playing clubs in the early seventies he always played this, and always claimed to have written it himself. He could get away with it because Fred Wedlock was a full-time college lecturer at the time, and never played very far from his Bristol home. This irritated some people I knew to the extent that they produced the Fred Wedlock recording at a Jasper Carrott gig, pointed out the songwriting credit (Simon/Wedlock), and asked him to explain.
He caved in, admitted he didn't write it, and remembered an urgent appointment!

Kendall does a hilarious version of this. Don't know who he thinks wrote it.

So who is Rick Bower that seems to have initiated the song?

As far as I know, Rick Bauer wrote it.

The version that I used to do was the second one up there from Gareth's clicky, near enough, with the best verses added from the other one...

I've sung my songs for money, and sometimes I've been paid,
And I carry a reminder, from every gig I've played,
Like last Friday, in the Irish club, I fled in mortal fear,
With the imprint of a Guinness bottle stamped upon my ear.

Well, I've got myself together, man; I'm really freaking out,
Smoking cannabis (St Bruno!) drinking pints of stout,
And having hang-ups, I'm like the rest!
I've had trouble with my sex-life since I fell and sprained my wrist.

And my other songs are twice as bad as this.
