Subject: Best Contemporary Folk/Acoustic Artists From: John Robinson (aka Cittern) Date: 19 Aug 03 - 09:33 AM Following on from a suggestion in another thread to start a discussion on "non-traditional" artists and line ups ... Have you recently seen any contemporary folk/acoustic artists which particularly stand out? I'll start with: Serious Kitchen Howden, Jones & Taffinder Jiggerypipery (sp?) FOS Brothers Band Paul Buckley Kate Rusby And of course one Julie Ellison, who impressed me so much that I became involved in her album production, sound engineering etc. Best regards John Robinson http://www.JulieEllison.co.uk Oh - and Acaysha. |
Subject: RE: Best Contemporary Folk/Acoustic Artists From: greg stephens Date: 19 Aug 03 - 09:44 AM Looks a bit like "pigeon-holing" to me, Cittern. Watch out, you'll soon have that Harvey Andrews round, saying you should be listening to Harry Cox. |

Subject: RE: Best Contemporary Folk/Acoustic Artists From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 19 Aug 03 - 10:20 AM Don't want to say 'best' as it's a subjective thing, but these are SUPERB:- Allan Taylor (Moody and Magnificent!) Jez Lowe Kathryn Roberts and Sean Lakeman (both Trad and Contemporary) If'n you're a Bluesperson, try Emily Druce. (Do we call blues 'Traditional' or 'Contemporary'? As a lot of it's from the 20th Century, I guess it can be counted as Contemporary?). A young lady from Lincolnshire - Miranda Sykes (solo and with her excellent band 'Firebrand', fantastic voice and again falls into both camps). And, of course, the aforementioned Harvey Andrews - songwiter and performer of the highest order. |

Subject: RE: Best Contemporary Folk/Acoustic Artists From: harvey andrews Date: 19 Aug 03 - 03:05 PM Well, quite right Gregg, we should all listen to Mr Cox. As we should all listen to the best of all musics at all times, whenever possible. I would mention Emily Slade and El Greko, who has written some delightful songs and who performs them with great musical skill. And for the old codgers, Mike Silver is having a fine renaissance and I hear Dave Mallet will soon be releasing a new cd. Can't wait!!! |

Subject: RE: Best Contemporary Folk/Acoustic Artists From: George Papavgeris Date: 20 Aug 03 - 04:00 AM Shucks Harvey, I'm blushing...Well, to repeat my list from the other thread (and the sequence here is as it was there, not as a result of Harvey's praise): Harvey Andrews, Martyn Wyndham-Read singing Graham Miles, Mick Ryan & Pete Harris, Roy Bailey singing Len Rosselson/Si Kahn, Robb Johnson, Jez Lowe, Vin Garbutt, Ben Campbell. And Bob Fox singing Jez Lowe/Jimmy Nail. And Steve Hughes (who? buy his album "The love you shared" on UNLaBEL002 from www.nightcafe.co.uk and find out). So much good music out there, so little time... |

Subject: RE: Best Contemporary Folk/Acoustic Artists From: alanabit Date: 20 Aug 03 - 12:41 PM Why has nobody mentioned Pete Morton yet? |
Subject: RE: Best Contemporary Folk/Acoustic Artists From: Mary Humphreys Date: 20 Aug 03 - 12:57 PM Has nobody heard of Chris Manners? He has a fantastic voice, guitar-playing ability to rival anyone AND the most wonderful way with words and tunes. He is a resident at Pete Coe's Ryburn club in West Yorkshire, though I think he hails from Kent or somewhere south of Watford, though I won't hold that against him as it's not his fault! His song about Dracula at Whitby is one of the best I have heard. He also has a very moving song about the last of the lighthouse keepers. And of course, how could I not mention El Greko - my favourite contemporary songwriter, who has even persuaded me - a dyed-in-the-wool traddie - to sing one of his songs. He is a superb performer with such a charismatic presence. Book him for your club NOW! |
