Hello everyone. Guy here.
I thought it would be fun to hear any stories people would like to share on my old friend Lui Collins. We just did a concert together a week or two ago. We hadnt played together for over 25 years and it sounded like we had never stopped. What a blast and people liked it as well ( Always a nice sighn)
Now where I have been making pots and making music on the side Lui has been out there all this time and I would love to hear any stories of her hard work of keeping true to herself and her music.
As always all the best to all here. Guy

Wow, I don't think I've heard that name since about 1977, when I was listening to folk music on WXPN in Philadelphia. I believe I heard a few things by her on the radio and liked them very much. As I recall, she sounded a bit like Cindy Kallet--but my memory may be playing its usual tricks on me. I kept meaning to find out more about her music but never did. I'm so glad to hear she's still performing. Maybe I'll take the opportunity to find out more about her now.

Aloha,
Mark

Hey, Guy, that's really neat that you & Lui performed together again! I heard her in person a couple of times, maybe 12-14 years ago now. I really liked her & her music & have enjoyed listening to her recordings ever since! I believe I heard her at Branford, CT.

best,

I never met her but her album Phoenix (?) has helped me through my last few breakups. Wildflowers was particularly helpful in keeping up hope for the future. I say "was" for I have quit the game and the song carries a painful poignancy now.

I don't know her personally either but my chorus has done a few of her songs and she has always been gracious and pleasant to deal with when obtaining permissions.

A guest on my program a number of years ago and certainly a mainstay of some of the artists we play on the TRADITIONS program on WFDU.

In person a great performer on stage and a wonderfully communicative and verbal communicator on radio.

like all her albums, but the Ft Knox CD is just great---as is another one that has some wonderful music for children on it.

My first encounter with her was from an old vinyl disc on which she sang the Greg Brown piece---Rooty Toot Toot for The Moon

Thanks,

Barbara

Hi, Guy:

Many years ago, I split an evening with Lui Collins at Woods Hole, in Massachussets. In a way, it was an odd match, because even though we are both songwriters, are styles and material are worlds apart. But, we both enjoyed each other... I think our differences might have been more of a stretch for the audience than they were for us. About mid-career, Lui stopped performing regularly for awhile... I don't really know her, so I don't know why. I'm glad she's still recording and performing. She was really an enjoyable person.

Jerry

Barbarah . The Milton concert is a jem. It is in a very small town hall much like old Grange halls with a very nice wood stove. Bring blankets if you are at the other end of the room thouh. Lui dose that concert without a PA because it works in that room. I si my faverite show of the year. Lots of kids come out as well. If you come over you must have dinner with us first !
Jerry I know what you mean about stretching audiences. ! Lui gave some years to being a mother first just as she was getting "BIG" but She didnt stop playing out as it were.   I think she has matured as an artist as well . I love her shows now. I am a great fan of her banjo playing whitch she has put a lot of work into the last few years. !

Gee, Guy, that sounds great! I'd love to come over, although I hope I'll make it over to the pottery sooner. I'm having trouble w/ my new schedule. Used to be, I'd stay home w/ my kids. Now, my kids are both in Albany & I'm frequently away on weekends--either w/ them or because they're not home! I'll try to call soon.

Thanks,

Barbara

Wow! I attended the concert last night, as well as visiting the pottery, (finally!), & spending time w/ Guy & Lui before the concert. It was great! It always makes it more fun for the audience when performers enjoy themselves & Lui & Guy certainly seemed to enjoy making music together. The music was a nice mix of seasonal, Lui's tried & true, plus newer work, & some of Guy's repetoire. It all held together for a very enjoyable evening. The audience obviously loved Lui, singing along with a sure knowledge of her music (& good harmony, too!). They opened their proverbial arms to welcome Guy, as well. The setting, as Guy mentioned, was a small hall (seats 100 or less) w/ good acoustics, heated by a large wood stove--very pleasant. I was glad to be a part of it. Thanks, Guy & Lui!

best,

Barbara

Barbara was a perfect guest ! She brought tea and music for us to hear and put up with Lui and me practising things I hadnt tried before. Great conversation and warm meetings finaly made !
The concert was wonderful . The audience has heard Lui playing a solo concert in this very private room for years and years now and to have that personal show opened up with Lui invited me in was very touching and I was ever so happy to get to play with her again .
Thanks so much for coming BBC /* Barbara !!!!!

I bought each and every one of her CDs to help her pay for a speeding ticket we got coming back from Vermont. Every one is a gem, and I recommend getting them all! She is a true artist and songbird. I do believe her style is so distinctive and strong that she has defined a separate genre: Lui Collins Music. She will touch your heart through her music, guaranteed. By the way, she plays a hell of an old time banjo. I would also recommend hosting her for a house concert. She'll put on a time you won't forget.

I agree on all counts Al . Her banjo playing is a joy to hear. !! I also love her poetry and on the whole I'm not into that kind of thing . Never knew Lui to have a speeding ticket . Ill have to joke her on that one when I see her the 18th , THanks ! . All the best , Guy

The signs, the cop, and the road combined seamlessly to act as a speed trap. It was a small sleepy town. I think the only policing action that cop ever got was stopping people for speeding all day long. We did a Uie and came back to look over the situation again. He already had someone pulled over, and it was maybe 1.5 minutes later. To serve and protect. It's really quite humorous looking back at it. Totally in agreement about the poetry. Lui's one fine gal.

Guy;
I met Lui a couple of years ago when she did a small concert at MAy Memorial Unitarian/Universalist Church here in Syracuse. In addition to being a splendid performer she is a very charming and friendly person. I enjoy her music immensely. Neil K. MacMillan

I've heard the name, but can't say if I know her music.

The pics on her website, especially the old ones look like a woman I played with (split bill) in Cambridge in the early 80's - I think it was at the Idler.

Could be, I suppose ...

I have two LPs that I bought from her at a coffeehouse many, many moons ago. One is called "Made In New England" and it's not very good. The other is called "Baptism Of Fire" and it is very good indeed.

We had so much fun making Made In New England and we learned a ton from the proccess . It was Lui's first record . I helped produce that project and funny enough I didnt work on the second one: Baptisum, so getting rid of me may have solved the problem ... Ha HA Haaaa , Sorry it didnt hit the spot for you, guest . Thankfully it was a very popular record in its time. All the best , Guy
