Subject: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: Rick Fielding Date: 27 Aug 03 - 12:33 PM Good friend Harvey has sent me a radio site that runs occasional old British humour and musical satire, but it occurs to me that there may be more. Does anyone have info on this or if old ken Williams' shows have made it to cassette? Cheers and thanks. Rick |

Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: johnross Date: 27 Aug 03 - 02:49 PM The BBC's digital "Comedy and Drama" channel, BBC 7, runs Round the Horne and an earlier program with many of the same cast, Beyond Our Ken, every week. It's available online as a streaming audio service: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbc7/ The same channel also carries many other old BBC comedies, including The Goon Show, Tony Hancock, I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again and lots more. |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: katlaughing Date: 27 Aug 03 - 03:00 PM Rick, I am making you a tape of stuff from this website, including the Two Kens: click here. Wait 'til you hear Anthony Hancock's Blood Donor routine! luvyakat |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: Murray MacLeod Date: 27 Aug 03 - 03:04 PM "A pint ? That's nearly an armful ...." A funny routine indeed, kat, but just for the record he was always known as Tony, never Anthony .... Murray |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 27 Aug 03 - 03:07 PM Murray, sometimes he referred to himself in his shows as Anthony Aloysius Hhhhancock. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: katlaughing Date: 27 Aug 03 - 03:09 PM Thanks, Murray and Seamus. They have him as "Anthony" on that website. |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: Murray MacLeod Date: 27 Aug 03 - 06:42 PM That is true Seamus, he did indeed, Anthony Aloysius Hancock of 23 Railway Cuttings, Cheam if I remember aright, (which I probably don't). All I was suggesting to Kat was that if anybody were to refer to Hancock as "Anthony Hancock" in normal conversation, it would sound strange to British ears. Much in the same way that it would sound strange if somebody referred in a matter-of-fact way to Francis Sinatra, or Robert Dylan. Murray |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: izzy Date: 27 Aug 03 - 08:17 PM Well, it's a small world. I was just listening to Round the Horne on tape yesterday while I was making supper (got one of the two tape sets from the BBC as a Christmas present one year) and was absolutely dying off, particularly at the Julian and Sandy routine --it was the boarding house venture, taken up by the two of them after their stint as Punch and Judy men fell through when Jules gave the eggnog a thrashing one night and the performance deteriorated into something quite unsuitable for children --Punch ran off with the Hangman and Judy ended up singing risque songs with the Crocodile. Bloody genius... I'm often wished I could get hold of more Round the Horne tapes, but it's a bit expensive to order them overseas. Speaking of folk music, what do people think of Rambling Syd Rumpo? I mean, he did everything but stick his finger in his ear and go "nyaah", didn't he? It can't have done much for folk music's image. Well, enough of my ramblings. I shall toddle off and look at that url for BBC 7. Interesting Round the Horne fact: Did you know that if Nelson's column were laid on its side, the top of Nelson's hat would block the entrance to the gents' washroom in Scotland yard?? Cheers, Isabel |

Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: Seamus Kennedy Date: 28 Aug 03 - 01:15 AM Murray, point taken! BTW, the only way to refer to Sinatra as Francis (especially in his later years) was to include his middle name - Albert. You're right, though, Anthony (or was it Antony?) would sound ridiculous. Seamus |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 28 Aug 03 - 03:45 AM "Anthony Aloysius St Jon Hancock" when the character was at his most pompous. "Tub" to Bill Kerr! "'Ancock" to Sid James and "Mr Hancock" to Miss Pugh (Hattie Jaques). RtS (no... stop messing about....) |
Subject: RE: Any 'Round the Horne's' on tape or radio From: GUEST Date: 28 Aug 03 - 04:04 AM I've got RTH on LP! You can sometimes find them in charity shops. |
