"I Want a Banana," performed by Arthur Askey and Phil Greenon, appears on the Arthur Askey CD "Hello, Playmates!" ASV CD 5444, 2002.

It also appears spelled "I Wanna Banana" on the various-artists CD "Mairzy Doats: 24 Great Comic Songs," Prism CD 137, 1997.

Yahoo! Shopping > Music has a sound sample, from which I transcribed this:

... really should enjoy.
You can tell the captain. You can tell the crew.
I don't want a monkey or a cockatoo.
I want a banana. I want a banana.
Bring me back a banana, sailor boy.

You brought me back an orange. It gave me great delight.
You brought me back a lemon, and you squeezed me tight....

Aaaah (I'll get in before young Parkes does....)when the Second World War ended, war babies like me were introduced to the banana which had been unavailable during the years of the unpleasantness and our parents had yearned for their return...hence the song.

Actually, Roger, I'm too young to have been a war baby. But my Aunt worked at the Bloxwich Lock and Stamping Co, where she made the thing that holds the oil that oils the ring that holds the shank that turns the crank that works the thingummybob.

Subject: Lyr Add: I WANT A BANANA (Butler/Evans)
From: GUEST
Date: 23 Jan 11 - 04:32 PM

I WANT A BANANA
Written by Ralph Butler & Tolchard Evans, 1942.
Recorded by Arthur Askey.

1. A sailor and his sweetheart were walking hand in hand,
The day that he was sailing for a foreign land.
Said he, "Oh tell me, darling, what shall I bring you back?"
She came a little closer and then she said, "Oh, Jack—

CHORUS. I want a banana. I want a banana.
Bring me back a banana, sailor boy!
I want a banana. I want a banana.
That's the thing I really should enjoy.

2. You can tell the captain. You can tell the crew.
I don't want a monkey or a cockatoo.
I want a banana. I want a banana.
Bring me back a banana, sailor boy!

3. You brought me back an orange. It gave me great delight.
You brought me back a lemon, and you squeezed me tight.
You brought me back a grapefruit. I paid you with a kiss.
Now, when you're in Jamaica, please remember this: CHORUS

4. You brought me back a straw hat that came from Panama,
A pair of coral earrings, back from Zanzibar.
Fine Oriental trinkets are beautiful no doubt,
But when you're in Jamaica, oh, cut the knick-knacks out! CHORUS

VERSE 2 TWICE.

Not sure which guest is which, but Lynne definitely got the words to the song because I've heard her sing it!

As I remember, there was also an Askey movie about landing on an all woman island and them being dressed in bee suits. Don't ask me any more, I only watched it at 3 am.... think the song Busy Bee was in it.

You can hear a recording of Arthur Askey singing I WANT A BANANA at YouTube.

Askey's pronunciation is impeccable, to the point of being a bit stilted, but I suppose that's part of the humor. He very distinctly sings: "I want a banana" not "I wanna...."

I'm sure Britain had worse things to worry about in 1942 than a banana shortage, which is probably what motivated this bit of comic relief.

Then, of course, there's the banana version of
I want to be near you

Instead of
I want to be near you, you're the one, the one the one
I want to be near you, you're the one for me.

I want a banana monkey nuts are not for me
I want a banana, give me one for tea.

How do you fare on the banana age test. have you always know bananas, can you remember meeting your first and wondering what to do with it, or do you remember them before and after the War?
