I'm looking for CD's or tapes of classical compositions for guitar at the beginner to intermediate level. Anyone got any good suggestions? Beginner to intermediate fingerpicking compositions are also an option, as long as it's not "Travis style thumbpicking." Thanks.

Thanks for the link Frank, but a quick perusal of the products offered there tells me that wasn't exactly what I had in mind. I'm not looking for the instructional stuff, just the recordings themselves by artists who haven't thrown in a lot of fancy stuff. Maybe what I'm looking for doesn't exist, but something along the lines of what this guy (check out Sarabande) did. Unlike Sarabande, I'm looking for something that has more counterpoint in it, if you know what I mean.

I was going to suggest looking at some of the many guitar recordings of Bachs' music. Beautifully simplistic but harder than it appears, and certainly enough to stretch an intermediate player.
The technique requires a lot more discipline and precision than most modern picking styles and I personally found it opened a few doors, musically speaking.

David Russell recorded the complete works of Fransico Tarrega on a 2 CD set which includes all of the preludes and studies he wrote as well as the concert works. The CD was released by Opera Tres. David Russell is a phenominal player who plays Tarrega's music better than anyone (imo). This CD is well worth having.

I have no idea if this is what you're interested in, but you mentioned fingerpicking compositions, and I know Pat performs some of his own stuff. I've not heard his CDs, but I've heard him in live performances several times, and he is outstanding!

The Segovia Collection, Vol. 7 contains recordings that Andres Segovia made of studies by Aguado, Sor, Giuliani, Coste, as well as one by Tarrega and one by himself. The CD also contains great liner notes written by Eliot Fisk. If I remember correctly, this is a relatively cheap CD, and (imo) well worth the money.
Also, it shouldn't be too hard to find a recording of Gasper Sanz' Espanoletas. It's a simple piece that is usually played as the begining to his Suite Espanola and was very well writen.


I'd also like to point out that I appearently discovered that this forum was back first!

LOL, I agree! But I once heard him play Battle Hymn of the Republic in very simple notes, over and over. He said he was intriqued by the tune.

Hmm, it's not quite as good as I remember - only about a dozen composers covered, and not all in great depth. The page is all in Chinese, but there's a list box at the top which has the composers' names in English, which selects pieces by that composer (with names of pieces also in English). Bach and Guiliani are favourites of mine.

Not on tape, but a good set of books are the "Classic guitar collection" series (with a nice picture on the front - check Amazon for details ;-) These have a mix of pieces of different standards, ranging from very basic up to Recuerdos de Las Alhambras! Out of the hundred-odd pieces in each book, there'll be a dozen or so pieces for anyone.
