Subject: she's been after man ever since
From: GUEST,Anders Faergeman, Denmark
Date: 02 Sep 03 - 03:48 AM

Hi there,
I was happy about getting the lyrics to "The Telephone Girl" last
time I was in contact. I have another request, also a Blind Alfred Reed song, recorded by Red Clay Ramblers on their

Stolen Love LP.
It's called "She's Been After Man Ever Since". I'd greatly appreciate
any help.
                           Thanks

                           Anders

How about this? From http://www.smsu.edu/folksong/maxhunter/0153/

Woman After Man

VERSE 1
God, made man in his own image
And all things were going right
But it seemed that man was doomed to sin and fall
Eve, she tasted of the apple
Begged till Adam took a bite
And that put the human family to th wall
After Adam was beguiled
Woman kept on going wild
Causing man to have all kinds of funny schemes
We can plainly understand
Woman was made after man
An' she's been after man ever since

VERSE 2
What a shame it is that women
Try to be so much like men
They will run for office, if they get a chance
Man had jest as well quit grumbling
For his precious wife owns him
And th time has come, when she should wear the pants
How they dress it is a fright
Wear their skirts so short and tight
They can hardly make it when they cross th fence
But they do th best they can
Woman was made after man
And she's been after man ever since

VERSE 3
Yes, indeed these days a woman
Tries to be so much like man
They will even have their hair cut short like his
They will gamble and sell liquor
And will bootleg all they can
O, it's dreadfull how deceitful, woman is
They buy lipstick in a box
Paint their cheeks and roll their socks
They can say more than all th Presidents
Woman thinks she's mighty grand
But she was made after man
An' she's been after man ever since

VERSE 4
Tho' young man, if you are courting
One who says she loves you well
Do not think it's true because she hugs your neck
For she surely will deceive
And will slip around and tell
That she married you to get your little check
Boy, you'd better take it slow
What she's after is your dough
And a very sorry child you'll be some day
Woman thinks she's mighty grand
But she was made after man
An she's been after man ever since

Eve Wasn't Modest Till She Ate That Apple
(We'll Have To Pass The Apples Again)
Words by Chas. McCarron, Music by Albert Von Tilzer

1. Everybody loves a girl who's modest,
Everybody loves a girl who's shy,
When a girl is modest and retiring
You can bet she'll always get by
Modesty began in the garden of Eden,
In every book you'll find
I'll admit it started in the Garden of Eden,
But just bear this in mind.

CHO 1:
Eve wasn't modest till she ate that apple
That old apple's to blame
The minute that she ate it, she felt humiliated
And hid behind the apple tree till darkness came
If one little apple made the first girl modest,
It ought to work now as well as then
Once they only wore a leaf
Clothes are getting just as brief,
If every mother's daughter, wears dresses any shorter,
We'll have to pass the apples again.

2. Just suppose that every girl was modest,
Just suppose that every girl was shy,
There would be no dust when days are windy
To blow right in the naughty man's eye
We'd have better business in our marriage market,
Each man would surely mate
When they start proposing they can see what they're getting,
That's why some hesitate.

CHO 2:
Eve wasn't modest till she ate that apple
That old apple's to blame
The minute that she ate it, she felt humiliated
And hid behind the apple tree till darkness came
If one little apple made the first girl modest,
It ought to work now as well as then
Way back in the olden days
Men were fooled by girlie ways,
For then we never knew them, but now we see right through them,
We'll have to pass the apples again.

FROM THE FILK CLASSIC "REAL OLD TIME RELIGION"
Lizzie Stanton and disciples, held that Genesis is libel,
So they wrote "The Womens' Bible" and it's good enough for me!

"The Womens' Bible" is a feminist interpretation of the scriptures, written by women Bible scholars, under the direction of the great suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton.

Subject: Lyr Add: WOMAN'S BEEN AFTER MAN EVER SINCE (Reed)

There are numerous minor textual differences in Blind Alfred Reed's original recording and the version George posted above. It will be easier to post Reed's text rather than point to the differences line by line:

WOMAN'S BEEN AFTER MAN EVER SINCE
(Blind Alfred Reed)

God made man in his own image
And all things were going right
But it seems that man was doomed to sin and fall
Eve she tasted of the apple,
Begged till Adam took a bite
And that put the human family to the wall
After Adam was beguiled,
Woman kept on going wild
Causing man to have all kinds of punishments
We can plainly understand
Woman was made after man
And she's been after man ever since

What a shame it is that women
Try to be so much like men
They will run for office if they get a chance
Men had just as well stop calling
His dear, precious wife 'old hen'
For the time has come when she should wear the pants
How they dress it is a sight,
Wear their skirts so short and tight
They can hardly make it when they cross a fence
But they do the best they can
Woman was made after man
And she's been after man ever since

Yes indeed today a woman
Tries to be so much like man
She will even have her hair cut short like his
Some will gamble and sell liquor,
They will bootleg all they can
Oh, it's dreadful how deceitful woman is
They get lipstick in a box,
Paint their lips and roll their socks
They think they know more than all the presidents
Woman thinks she's mighty grand
But she was made after man
And she's been after man ever since

So young man if you are courting
One who says she loves you well
Do not think it's true because she hugs your neck
For she surely will deceive you
And she'll slip around and tell
That she'd marry you to get your little cheque
Boy, you'd better take it slow
All she's after is your dough
Just watch out and very soon you'll be convinced
She'll make love to beat the band
But she was made after man
And she's been after man ever since

Source: transcription of Blind Alfred Reed 'Woman's Been After Man Ever Since' recorded in NYC on 3 December 1929 and issued as Victor 40196. Reissued on Blind Alfred Reed 'Complete Recorded Works' Document DOCD-8022.

The Red Clay Ramblers' recording sticks pretty faithfully to the Reed original. The only difference is that they transpose the first lines of stanzas 2 and 3: 'Yes indeed today the women' for stanza 2 and 'What a shame it is that women' for stanza 3. The only other difference is that they have 'so' instead of 'true' in stanza 4, line 3. The Red Clay Ramblers 'Stolen Love' Flying Fish LP FF-009 [1975].
