Subject: LYR HELP: She Just Ain't Built That Way
From: Gene
Date: 28 Aug 98 - 03:22 PM

Have pieces of old time tunes running thru my head---
This one is a NOVELTY tune about the difference between a man and a woman!

Possible title:
SHE JUST AIN'T BUILT THAT WAY
Singer: Unknown

I remember the tune clearly
But I only recall the following lines

A woman can .........
She can .............
But, she can't strike a match in the dark like a man
'Cause she just ain't built that way;

And she can't jump over a fence like a man
'Cause she just ain't built that way.

From the 40's era, maybe.

From Traditional Music of America by Ira W. Ford (New York, E.P. Dutton and Co., 1940), page 376:

[I pieced this together from many "snippets." I believe the book has musical notation, but I wasn't able to see it. Also it's possible the book has additional information that I wasn't able to see.]

^^
BECAUSE SHE AIN'T BUILT THAT WAY

Why is it a woman can't climb up a tree?
Because she ain't built that way.
And why is it two of them never agree?
Because they ain't built that way.
'Tis said that there is no effect without cause,
But a woman can never come under that clause,
For she never gives reason for wagging her jaws,
Because she ain't built that way.

Don't give to your wife any secrets to keep,
Because she ain't built that way
For she couldn't hold them, not even in sleep
Because she ain't built that way
She'll keep you in water that's dreadfully hot
And she'll keep when she can all the change you have got.
But a secret, oh, Jiminy! certainly not,
Because she ain't built that way.

Don't mash every girl that you see on the street,
Because they ain't built that way.
Don't rave of her figure so perfect and neat,
Because she ain't built that way.
With bustles and padding, and heels that are high,
With blending of colors to capture the eye,
And the real from the sham you can't tell if you try
Oh, there's lots of them built that way.

A woman cannot hit a barn with a stone,
Because she ain't built that way.
And she can't bear to stay in a house all alone,
Because she ain't built that way.
She can stay up all night at a masquerade ball
And tire every dancer there is in the hall.
Don't ask her to sew on a button, that's all,
Because she ain't built that way.

A woman can never jump over a fence,
Because she ain't built that way.
If a mad bull should chase her she has no defense,
Because she ain't built that way.
She can kick up a row, upset every plan,
She's been noted for that since the world first began.
But she can't strike a match in the dark like a man
Because she ain't built that way.

'preciate the post JIM...a local music pal cross town found an Mp3
2 or 3 years ago by Asa Martin...on some old 78 site.

The original post was so long ago I forgot about it...

====She Aint Built That Way by Asa Martin country/folk A tongue in cheek tune about the perplexing ways of women. Asa Martin straight-faces these lyrics like a true old time singer.

I suppose the last couplet alludes to the 19th-century tradition of men wearing jeans so tight that they could strike a match on the seat. These days, among young Americans at least, it would be women that are "built that way". The height, or depth, of fashion for young men seems to be crotches down around their knees.
