Subject: LYR HELP: She Just Ain't Built That Way
From: Gene
Date: 28 Aug 98 - 03:22 PM

Have pieces of old time tunes running thru my head---
This one is a NOVELTY tune about the difference between a man and a woman!

Possible title:
SHE JUST AIN'T BUILT THAT WAY
Singer: Unknown

I remember the tune clearly
But I only recall the following lines

A woman can .........
She can .............
But, she can't strike a match in the dark like a man
'Cause she just ain't built that way;

And she can't jump over a fence like a man
'Cause she just ain't built that way.

From the 40's era, maybe.

Subject: Lyr Add: BECAUSE SHE AIN'T BUILT THAT WAY Mitchell
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 29 Sep 09 - 10:15 PM

From the sheet music at Baylor University:

BECAUSE SHE AIN'T BUILT THAT WAY
Words and music by J. F. Mitchell, 1886.
"As sung by Billy Rice of Thatcher, Primrose & West's Minstrels"

1. Why is it a woman can't climb up a tree?
Because she ain't built that way.
And why is it two of them never agree?
Because she ain't built that way.
'Tis said that there is no effect without cause,
But a woman can never come under a clause,
For she never gives reason for wagging her jaws,
Because she ain't built that way.

2. Don't give to your wife any secrets to keep,
  Because she ain't built that way;
For she couldn't hold them, not even in sleep
Because she ain't built that way.
She'll keep you in water that's dreadfully hot
And she'll keep when she can all the change you have got,
But a secret, oh, Jiminy! certainly not,
Because she ain't built that way.

3. Don't "mash" every girl that you see on the street
Because they're not built that way.
Don't rave of her figure so perfect and neat,
Because she ain't built that way.
With bustles and padding and heels that are high,
With blending of colors to capture the eye,
And the real from the sham you can't tell if you try
Oh, there's lots of them built that way.

4. A woman cannot hit a barn with a stone,
Because she ain't built that way.
And she can't bear to stay in a house all alone,
Because she ain't built that way.
She can stay up all night at a masquerade ball
And tire every dancer there is in the hall.
Don't ask her to sew on a button; that's all,
Because she ain't built that way.

5. I don't think my mother-in-law is a saint
Because she ain't built that way.
And now that I think, I'm quite certain she ain't
Because she ain't built that way.
She's down on my list for a few little things,
And when her career to a finish she brings,
I think they'll have trouble in fixing her wings
Because she ain't built that way.

6. A woman can never jump over a fence
Because she ain't built that way.
If a mad bull should chase her, she has no defense
Because she ain't built that way.
She can kick up a row and upset every plan.
She's been noted for that since the world first began,
But she can't strike a match in the dark like a man
Because she ain't built that way.

2 or 3 years ago by Asa Martin...on some old 78 site.

The original post was so long ago I forgot about it...

====She Aint Built That Way by Asa Martin country/folk A tongue in cheek tune about the perplexing ways of women. Asa Martin straight-faces these lyrics like a true old time singer.

I suppose the last couplet alludes to the 19th-century tradition of men wearing jeans so tight that they could strike a match on the seat. These days, among young Americans at least, it would be women that are "built that way". The height, or depth, of fashion for young men seems to be crotches down around their knees.

It is printed in Green's Census and Diary Almanac, 1880 (printed in 1879).

It is not presented as a song but as a series of poems by different newspapers about women not being built that way.

Subject: Lyr Add: MOLLY AIN'T BUILT THAT WAY (Walsh&Barker)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 21 May 20 - 07:13 PM

I found this on Spotify. This singing duo (one of them plays piano) made 11 short films for British Pathé between 1935 and 1941.

MOLLY AIN'T BUILT THAT WAY
As recorded by Walsh & Barker on "Vintage British Comedy, Vol. 9" (2011) and "The Classic Comedy Collection 3, Vol. 3" (2011)

Now, I know a gal; she's a marvelous gal, and her mother will tell you so.
There's not many things that gal can't do, and nothing this gal don't know.

She can smoke a cigarette; she smokes them night and day,
But she can't strike a match on her trousers yet, 'cause Molly ain't built that way.
She'll go for a country stroll and romp among the hay,
But she never stays there till the last train's gone, 'cause Molly ain't built that way.
Ha-ha, ho-ho!
There isn't very much that gal don't know.
She can swim like mermaids swim; she's marv'lous in the spray,
But she can't wag her tail like the mermaids do, 'cause Molly ain't built that way.

Oh eeny-meeny-meeny-meeny-my-o!
That'll be enough of that-o!

When the rumba was the craze, she got red-hot, they say,
But she cooled down when she tried the split, 'cause Molly ain't built that way.
She went riding in the Row for twenty miles(?) one day.
Now she breakfasts off the mantle shelf, 'cause Molly ain't built that way.
Ha-ha, ho-ho!
There isn't very much that gal don't know.
She will let you see her home; …(?) will let you stay,
But you can't stay there till breakfast—oh, no!—'cause Molly ain't built that way.

[Piano break]

Oh, that dimple in her chin she does love to display,
But she doesn't show all of her dimples, no, 'cause Molly ain't built that way.
Oh, she'll let nice boys hold her hand without the least dismay,
But she never lets nice boys hold her—mm, pocketbook—'cause Molly ain't built that way.
Ha-ha, ho-ho!
There isn't very much that gal don't know.
She has got a little dog; they go for walks each day,
But she can't do the things that the little dog does. 'cause Molly ain't built that way.
