I don't know if he ever recorded it, but I've always associated it with Dennis Day. When I heard the song when I was growing up, it was Day singing it every so often on the Jack Benny show on radio.

A great recording of a great song!

(Greater today than in 1901, because now it has "historical value"!)

I meant to say, above, that Giefer wrote the song in 1898 but it wasn't published till 1900, then recorded by Favor in 1901.

Here's Edward M. Favor's 1901 recording on YouTube.

The song was written by Giefer in 1898 but

You can hear Edward Favor's 1901 recording of the song here..
The lyrics he sings are "Mrs. Murphy" and "Tim Nolan," not "Mistress Murphy" and "McGinty."

Apparently, Julie Andrews also recorded it.   http://www.musicnotes.com/sheetmusic/mtdVPE.asp?ppn=MN0056424_U7.

Oscar Brand did it on his album, "Songs That Killed Vaudeville". My dad (John Henry Faulk) had this in his collection in the late 1950s. When I was finishing high school in another town then he let me keep it with me & enjoy it. "Hang On The Bell, Nellie" was also on that one, I think...Tw

I've been singing this song for over 60 years and I probably got it off of Bing's recording

I just found the sheet music for "Who Threw The Overalls In Mistress Murphy's Chowder".   The songwriter was George L. Giefer but the sheet music has a copyright date of 2006, so it wasn't helpful for determining the original publication date.

This sheet music was for Julie Andrews's recording of the song.

Bob, do you have that sheet music handy?
I'd love to know who the songwriters were and what the original copyright date was.

You are seeing the file code (not garbage!) because the owners of the site haven't set the MIME types on their server properly, and your browser thinks it is looking at a text file. In order to play the file, right-click on the link on their page and select "copy shortcut" (IE) or "copy link location" (Netscape). Open a media player that can handle mp3. Windows Media will do it (I prefer Winamp); in WM, go to "file: URL" and paste the link into the box. You should now be able to play the music.

Unfortunately, when I access the URL given and try to play the recording I just get a screen full of computer garbage.

Well, I've HEARD it, but know of no really recent recordings. Friends of mine used to do it every now and then but have not recorded it.

The Bing Crosby version was the one I knew when I was growing up. Think we might have had a 78 of it.

It's a humorous song I've heard many times. I think Mitch Miller might have recorded a version, but can't swear to it. It's one of those "Tin Pan Alley" songs that some purists seem to enjoy grousing about. I've even heard people complain about it being "anti-Irish" because of the way they perceive it to characterize folks of Irish descent. I can see that in some circumstances, but it's still a good bit of humor. Enjoy it, says I.

The song is still under copyright protection, so the copy of 1937 on the Levy sheet music website as Box 1558, Item 244a, doesn't give a .GIF of it, nor does it say who recorded it.
