And now let us talk again about singing. Since the wish was expressed to hear some German folk songs at the gathering I have translated again an old song so that you can sing and I can listen (voice nearly gone, alas). Thread to be found here.

Linda and I are hoping to arrive on Friday afternoon bringing Susanne and Wolfgang with us - that's if emanations of curry fumes and spurious 9's from the other side of the Humber don't interfer with our GPS navigation system. Btw Susanne/Wolfgang - have you two found out what time (UK BST) that we'll need to pick you up from Stansted Airport ? At least the fact that we've got a fairly full car means that we've got an excuse for not giving Avril Betts a lift up :-)). I assume that we'll be able to put the caravan (and the tent for Susanne) on the previously mentioned camping field.

T shirts for;Andy, Richard, Greg, Eric, Fibs, Oaklet,Terry K, Wilfried, Doug. Anyone else?

I have no idea of cost yet, and am waiting to see if there are more takers before I find a printer. They may be around £10.00 or less I hope. I don't expect to pay more than that. I've started putting out feelers and asking around. Is £10.0 too much? To litle or just about right. Some places will do "one offs" I gather, so 10 would not be a problem. More would probably be better.

By the way Skip, how did the farmer feel about hiring out his horse and cart for the tour of Hull?

The farmer told me to feck off and buy my own four by four Mitsuhonda Landcrab, but he was a little irritable as he had just walked ten miles to perform violin music as light entertainment for a pub full of mirthful guitarists.

Dave - not a word from Wolfgang so far. I suppose he's busy winding up his extra job of representing the university in some official capacity, and will surface again when he's finished with that. I will turn up outside his door (showing off my new metallic blue Opel car!) on the night of Thursday, 29 Apr, and see what happens.

As to the T-shirts - sorry, I've got one already and found I'm not the right shape for it ...

Hi,

Although I'm fairly new to Mudcat, I am hoping to attend -- would love to meet some of the faces that go with the names & posts I've been seeing/reading.

For health reasons, I need to sleep in a space that has an electrical outlet; I'm figuring one of the B&B's is my best bet at this point, but am hoping there might be one (or 2 or 3) others who might be interested in sharing a room, which would help keep the individual costs down. (Please PM me if you're interested.)

I'll be coming from Sheffield, and would be happy to give a lift to anyone else coming from there (or thereabouts). Fibula Mattock -- if your other arrangements don't work out for some reason, let me know; you could get a train to Sheffield & I could take you from there.

(On the other hand, if there's someone from Sheffield already planning to drive, I'm quite happy to ride (if you have space) & contribute to petrol costs.)

If I turn out to be the *only* one coming from the Sheffield area, then I'll probably try to get a train to Hull -- if some kind soul could be persuaded to give me a lift from Hull to the site of the actual gathering.

BTW, had the pleasure of meeting the Ducks this weekend (at the Barnsley Folk Festival -- great singing!); we were talking about the Euro Gathering & I mentioned I'd seen their names on the list above -- with a question mark. I expect one of them will prolly come post here eventually, but I can tell you now that other things have come up and they are not planning to attend at this point.

Cheers,

YY

Yorkshire Yankee, glad to hear you you are able to make it. If the train option is the one, then I'll have a Skipelf pick you up from Hull9, or advise you on the buses across the Bridge (It's the biggest bridge in Hull9). Do the fine-tuning by PM (including moby number if you have one of those ghastly modern contrivances) and I'll see to it.

Regarding accomodation boasting 240 volts, Mooman tells me that Doo Ron Ron and Glen can't make it this year (because Glen is succeeding Romano Prodi or summat), so the rheum over the road from here offered by the rolling-pin wielding Mrs Styles is officially free for rent.

Jane and Geoff Duck have told me that it is unlikely they will be able to make it, so there's no need to reply on that one.

I am now entering the panic zone well known to all previous MudEuroGather organisers, even the cool head of Wolfgang.

I happen to know that Oaklet was involved in covert operations in market intelligence in the Bullring last week that involved whelks jugged in a gsllon of ale. It doubled as a cunning plan to get a seat on an overcrowded train home.

Who am I to contradidict my esteemed and learned colleague MMario? But I must insist on the correct link
And now the bad news, for you, Skip&c.: Due to booking difficulties I shall miss the initial meeting at April 30 and shall arrive by P&O Ferry on May 1, about 08:00 (whatever time you use in North Lincolnshire), in the morning, so the timetable declares, at the estuaries of lovely Humber (they talk about a town named Hull there), just opposite to Barrow upon Humber. Sorry, but you will have to endure me until May 3, 21:00 when the ferry will leave to Rottendam, where I shall mount the train to Krankfurt. Sorry, but eager to meet you and all the hellish Hullish vikings.

Wilfried

P.S. Excuse the orthography, my humble self being a little bit drunk: I just met an old teacher of mine, and had a jolly wet discussion for some hours about about the times some 40 years ago

And you all: you are kindly requessted to sopp writing about whelks, wheeled elks and oll ather kinds of currencies amounting to 57 or what ellssssse it really disurbs me

Dear All,

Have just heard from Ken Gilman.

He and Elizabeth will also be joining us in rainy Barrow-upon-'Umber from sunny Albuquerque, New Mexico. There's commitment for you!

I've sent him the details of the rolling-pin wielding Mrs Styles in case she can help with accomodation.

I'll leave it to our rather large friend to amend the attendance details and collect the necessary £57 or 100 stinking fish or equivalent in whelks.

Peace

It would help with the catering if attendees could indicate whether you would prefer your whelks served with vinegar. Vinegra as we call it in North Lincs (due to its restorative properties) is extra. It costs an additional £57.00. The price level was suggested by a local aerophonist.

Mooman, that is wondeful news indeed that Ken and his new bride can join us. Brilliant! Wouldn't be a pucka Eurogather without him. That's made my otherwise rainy day.

Wilfried, I will have a local violinist, or somesuch collect you from wicked Hull9, and whisk you straight to the protective bosom of our quietly rural South Bank. Then we will try and integrate you back into Hull9 society safe in the phalanx of the cultural tour. So that's sorted.

Who is this local aerophonist? Vinegrette rien. £57 is the price, TIOFLI terms (take it or .........). That's a contractual term beloved of lard traders.

And another thing. I was out gigging with that Bill Sables in Whitby yesterday, and he has kindly offered to compere the Saturday Night Concert, for which the bill is now complete.

What we are hoping to be able to do is record the concert, and publish the highlights (which will be all of it!) as a fundraising CD for Mudcat. Early ideas for the title are 'Now That's What I Call Music 9' or 'Pay No More Than £57', but the marketing is at the embryonic stage.

My dearest Skippy,
It worries me that I actually have in my possession a copy of "Now that's what I call music 9" and there are no songs about Hull on it, although the Ward Brother's "Cross that Bridge" may be an indirect reference, as might Genesis' "Land of Confusion". It does, however, have Gary Moore's "Over the hills and far away" on it, so it's worthwhile keeping. But no mention of whelks.

Well, Fibs, my sadness is not beyond happening to know that the platter that you clutch was number one in the album charts in the UK on the fourth of April 1987, when you were a wee girl.

Those colonials, always sure to wait until an idea's a racing certainty, came to the party a bit late, and released their version in 2001.

So it seems this will be 'Now 9 III', which buggers up that idea.

I also humbly submit the titles 'Fare Thee Whelk' and 'WHELKOME TO HULL! Mudcat Eurogathering '04' for consideration.

Have had no response thus far from anyone interested in a ride from Sheffield (or nearby) (Fibula, are you sorted)? If I don't get any response in the next day or two, I will go ahead & make train reservations, so let me know *soon* if you are interested!

The 1971 Morris Traveller can be at the ferry terminal at 08.00, Wilfried, to collect and deliver you to Barrow. As most drive Morris Travellers in Hull - look out for a white one stuffed to the gunnels with whelks, being driven by a naked bloke with three pierced nipples. That should limit the list of potential taxi-drivers to 10 or so. If you have difficulties, please go to a public phone box (they are bright cream in Hull9), insert a selection of small denomination pre-decimal coins and ask the operator to be connected to Barton 962. Press the A button when the call is answered. Button B returns unspent coins.

As Ryanair has decided to fly an hour earlier, I'll now be arriving Friday at 12.50. This means I definitely have to take the 5AM train from Cork, and then go to the airport REALLY quickly.
Iarnrod Eireann had better not break down like last time!

Looking forward to it,

Letty

For those interested in badges, I should be able to make either 57mm or 30mm badges (thats actual badge size - so leave a reasonable border). I can produce Mudcat badges in either size complete with your own name. If you want to supply your own artwork you can bring it either pre-printed (on thin paper) or on a floppy disk in a standard graphics format. I can't rememember the diameter of the actual cut-out for the badges, but will check up when I get home - so you can print a circle for cutting purposes (to get more accurate alignment) if you so wish.
