Should have made myself less opaque. I'll be close by, but with other commitments, as I didn't know this was happening. Harmonic convergence, but off -key! Will email you for info, though. Thanks for your concern, Ferrara.

Jenny,

I posted this in another thread, but in case you didn't see it, I will re state it here.

You have my condolences on the loss of your grandmother. 95 years seems to indicate a life well lived. God be good to her, and to you as well. You are one of the nicest people in our community. And I will meet you next year when we go to the gathering.

All the best,

Mick

Dani -- WHY AREN"T YOU ON THE E-MAIL LIST???? It might still be possible for you to come to the Getaway because of Jenny having to cancel at the last minute. E-mail me for more info. - Rita Ferrara

ps It's a sore disappointment that we won't be meeting and singing with Jenny!

Aargh! I'll be a stone's throw away this weekend, and not there singing because I didn't read this thread in time!

Count me in as well for next year. I haven't checked out the website yet, it may answer my Q, but does the FSGW have a snail-mailing list?

Dani, who will hear you if you sing loud enough

Mick ... I wish I was going to be able to give a critique, however, my grandmother passed away Saturday and I've had to cancel my trip to the Getaway. I'm very, very disappointed and am already planning time for next year's Getaway. Maybe by then we'll have a whole group of 'Cats going. Jenny

Here's a health to all that are heading for this gathering. I am envious, and hope to make it next year. I hope that Jenny will give us a thorough review of the weekend, seeing as how it is her first one. Please share some stories with us.

And as my people say, Sla/n abhaile.

It means "safe home". Be careful goin' and comin'. The Cat needs all its neighbors.

All the best,

Mick

Well, Joe, I wish you could go, too, as well as some of the other Mudcatters. I'm going and really looking forward to it. It's been many a long year since I was in the company of so many people with the same interest in folk and blues as I. The program/workshops look great. I'll give you a report when I get back. My dad said he's worried about me driving by myself from Tallahasee to Annapolis. I reminded him that I drove the 6,000 miles from Fairbanks, AK to Tallahassee by myself, in 7 days! When he repeated his concern, I told him that at least I-95 is paved!!! Jenny

Subject: Tune Add: WAY OF SEX
From: Barbara
Date: 09 Sep 98 - 08:35 PM

This time, the tune should work. I communicated with Alan, and he tells me his conversion program doesn't do key changes (or time changes) so I went back and put in accidentals rather than a key change. This time it should fly. I hope. Worked for me anyway.
So, Jenny, when you have time, download Alan's free program, and use it to turn the teeny red numbers into a MIDI file that plays tunes.
Blessings, Barbara

Thanks, Barbara, for the info ... Right now I'm up to my ears in stuff, so it still doesn't make much sense, so I'll wait a couple of days when life settles down a bit and try again. Jenny

What you need, Jenny, is Alan's excellent conversion program, what you can get by clicking here where it says, "click here" back about 8 posts above. That will take you to the webpage that tells you how to download the file that you need to change all those cute red numbers into a MIDI file.
Then you follow Alan's directions for setting it up, feed it all those pretty red numbers, and shazam, it won't make a MIDI for you either. At least, I couldn't get it to work in reverse for me - this time. Most of the time it does a great job.
Alternatively, you can use the letters at the bottom, and feed them to an ABC transcription program that will make a sheet music or a MIDI out of them. Someone in the last week or two posted a description of how to read/write ABC. I think the name is in the thread caption, so if you use forum search, you should be able to find it. ABC is pretty direct: the letters are the names of the notes, and the numbers and the funny little squiggles are mostly time.
Blessings,
Barbara

Hey, ya'll! I'm just a wee bit challengned on "midi." I downloaded it, but honestly don't know what to do next. HELP! BTW ... thanks Barbara. Are all the numbers in red "tablature?" I'm not familiar with that either. I had never heard of it before this past February, but my cousin says it is very easy and he can teach me in a few minutes. Unfortunately ... he's in Rocky Mount, NC. HELP! HELP! HELP! Jenny

*grin*..Dick..I have this calendar, that, when you flip it to October, the first thing you see is a listing for 'Labor Day'....in Australia! So I run back to the computer with the right date, but the wrong name in my head! Go ahead, laugh...some day you, too, will be old and uh....well....never mind..

(BTW, thanks, Barbara....it sure is easier to find out stuff than it used to be...)

Well, Bill, I used to have a tape or two of theirs. Heard the three women in concert, I think first at Seattle Folklife back in the early 80's. Two women of size, and one petite, Mary was one of the large ones, lots of very funny songs including some about being the way you are and accepting it, one that was a powerful anti war atatement (I think using that line about the Pentagon having to hold a bake sale), and one I recall about a preacher's organ that was clean if your mind was [GRIN]. Seems like Mary wrote most of the songs on the tape.
Heard Flip Breskin sing the Ways of Sex years later, and she said Mary lived in Bellingham WA and was reforming the group as The Rolling Crones.
I don't know if she was serious, tho.
Blessings,
Barbara

I just played it with 'ABCMUS' and it worked fine...neat tune to go with really poignant words...(also, did a search on 'Mary Litchfield' and only got 2 hits..would like to know more about her and the origins of the songs...especially 'Key of R')

Jenny, let me know if the tune came thru okay for you. When I try to play it back on Alan's program, it won't work for me.

The tune, to my mind is rather mischievous. Try this:

In the old days I wanted to get back to nature. Now I just want to get back to the hotel!

You all have a fine time there. Wish I was with you---singing, having sex---whatever.

But be sure to tell everyone that my new recording (CD) is pretty much available now from WATERBUG RECORDS in Chicago.Right now (as we speak) it's being hawked at the Fox Valley Folk Festival.I haven't even seen it yet! But Waterbug will have it for sale at their website VERY SOON --- http://www.waterbug.com or through 1-800-466-0234

Title: THE OLDER I GET, THE BETTER I WAS
concert recordings from 3 decades
73 minutes and 50 seconds--22 tracks

(I just heard that Oasis CD miraculously managed to get it to Fox Valley by today. THANK YOU, MICAH!)

Subject: Lyr Add: WAY OF SEX (Mary Litchfield)^^
From: Barbara
Date: 05 Sep 98 - 03:12 PM

Yuppers, which is why *you* sing it; I don't. That is Mary Litchfield, too, right? I had these tapes from Women, Women and Song,Bellingham, WA, I believe, and that was on one. Or was it We Three, very similar sound, look, message.
Blessings,
Barbara

WAY OF SEX
(Mary Litchfield)

Some of us are single, some of us are married,
Some of us are breathing, some of us are buried;
Some get laid every day or so, some got laid a long time ago;
When they'll come again they don't really know,
And that is the way of sex.

Some of us like big strong men in the clinches,
Some of us prefer to hug lusty wenches
Some of us would rather go it alone
Some prefer things as yet unknown
You can't tell by looking just what is cooking
And that is the way of sex.

Some folks love a roll in the hay
Some would rather not bother
Too bad, ‘cause in some strange way
These two types end up with each other.

Some of us have one lover and one only
Some of us have lost count and still feel lonely
Some of us can do it just for fun,
Some of us have to marry everyone
Most of us can find a way to get the thing done
And that is the way of sex.

Sex begins as childhood ends,
It makes us howl at the moon.
It goes on till we don't know when;
We dance into age to a sexual tune.

Sex causes tears and sex causes laughter
Some times we use it to get what we're after
Sex causes babies and sex causes grief;
Sex is a joy, and a relief
But ignore it or embrace it, some how you have to face it,
And that is the way of,
That is the way of.
That is the way of sex!

Actually, Barry, singing in the key of R is not as hard as singing in R flat minor seventh suspended...
Speaking of which, Bill, does anyone on your side of the country sing Mary Litchfield's Ways of Sex?
Blessings,
Barbara

Hi Bill, the burnee is in cyberspace & his natural/unnatural curiosity is closing in on him forcing him (I believe) to make contact soon. He say's of you, if ever I should cross your path, to get 'em ta sing "In The Key Of R". I'd ask you to post it but I doubt from the the way it's suppose to be sung that there's any written form yet of getting the tune across without you singing it. Sounds like a grand ol musical time, have fun. Barry

*grin*...yep, Barry..a ballad WAS burnt! I know both the burner and the victim..(and they do not inhabit cyberspace so far.)But the most interesting story, for me, was meeting someone who was in the audience when the ballad was burnt...He said that as the ballad was being sung, one fellow was passing the time telling a joke to another, and just before the punchline, the fire was lit, causing a great uproar in the audience and interrupting the joke...which was not resumed. The fellow planned to ask the following year for the rest of the joke, but during the year, the joke teller died....the ballad lives on, but the joke is lost forever!!( I have heard the ballad done by the burnee..a couple of us contemplated a re-enactment, matches were even produced..but decided that the legend was fine as it is)

so..I will be curious to see what this new ballad involves...

I just heard a story of the Burning Ballad (it's author may be checking in on this post or actually may be headed you're way), & how it came to be written, haven't heard the actual song yet. You people, at these getaways, burn the lyrics of songs as the singer sings them, the longer the song the brighter the flame, strange tradition for folkies from the DC area. I met an old deep water sailor, years back in Maui, he was on his way home to England for a visit, after spending lifetime Downunder, during this visit he said he would pay his respects to a former 1st mate of his by a visit to his gravesite, while there he'd think about this mate while he poured a bottle of good rum all over his grave,,,,,,after he drank the bottle & not one drop before. This is the first time since then, that I've heard of any tradition that's been as interesting, wish I could make it, I bring rolls of songs. Barry

Thank you, thank you for all the info. After spending six years in Fairbanks, Alaska and driving the Alcan twice by myself, I'm pretty good at roughing it and adapting. I laugh and say that nowadays my idea of roughing it is a motor home without a vcr. In Fairbanks, we laughed because the first thing we all did when we went "outside" was watch tv, because there were more than two channels, and drink water because it wasn't heady with iron. As I said, I'm pretty adaptable. Just in case, though, I'd like to know about the nearby hotels, also. Anyway, I'm planning to be there and look forward to putting some faces with the names ... jenny

trying something...I think this will give you a map of the last mile or so to the camp...then go to the right side of the screen and click the next higher dot to get progressively wider views...allows you to view and/or print maps to go with directions, if you are a map reader.

Here's a little more detail in addition to what Bill and Charlie said:

Starting and ending times: The camp is available from about 5 pm Friday until Monday at noon. However the actual hours people attend are very flexible. That's why we have all kinds of payment options.

Some people sleep in their homes. One or two even rent motel rooms nearby. Some come for just one day, or two days but no nights. (In this case, if you want meals, you pay the daytime rates.) I don't know the rules for people who come in the daytime and bring their own food.

You may pay for two nights, or three. Lots of people arrive on Saturday morning rather than Friday night. Lots of folks also leave on Sunday evening, especially those (like us) with a kid who has school on Columbus Day. (Actually, we make our 16-year-old son sleep in the van on Sunday night until we are through singing, which tends to be around 1 or 2 am. )

For linens, bring single bed sheets and a blanket or two, or just a sleeping bag. Bring a pillow. The cots are fairly comfortable, they are bunk beds but have decent mattresses. Arriving early will help get you a lower bunk if you want one.

There is light, heat, electricity, bathrooms and hot showers in the cabins. There are rustic cabins which I suppose lack the heat and the bathrooms.

When you get acknowledgement of your registration, you'll receive a list of things to bring, eg rain gear, a reliable flashlight for finding your way to your cabin after singing all night, clothing for all weathers, etc.

I personally recommend bringing some bottled water for brushing your teeth, etc. I also bring an alarm clock with a quiet alarm so I won't miss breakfast. (The diehard late-night singers may become violent if you bring a clock with a LOUD alarm.)

Bring your mudcat tee shirt if you have one. Name tags (very nice ones) are provided.

To avoid misleading, I should quote from the hardcopy about advance payment: "Payment for Overnight Getaway Attendees may be done in installments. Deposits of $25 per adult and $10 per child required. The balance is due by September 25, 1998. After that date space will not be guaranteed."
But if you read this thread and it's after Sept. 25, and you'd like to come, contact the fsgw folk anyway, and see if space still isn't available.

Addendum to Bill D's notes about the Getaway:

Payment is usually done in advance; at least a deposit is required to reserve your space (amounts and dates due are on the hardcopy sign-up sheet you'll get).

Friday dinner is a pot-luck, and not catered by Debby McClatchy. People usually bring foods with them, but out-of-towners often just stop in Edgewater (a suburb of Annapolis you go through on your way to the camp) and pick up soda and juice at the supermarket and/or fried chicken from the KFC or that sort of thing. (Myself, I'm a veggie and would never think of picking up fried chicken.) You'll want to put your stuff in your room whenever you arrive. Dinner is often a good chance to say hi to old friends (or get to know everyone), and the serious music making usually starts after dinner on Friday. People do drift in later. Someone will be working at the welcome/registration table to 10 or 11 p.m., and if you arrive later than that, someone who is making music in the room will step over to the welcome/registration table and provide a warm greeting and help you find your way around. If you arrive at 3 or 4 a.m., you might have to rely on the self-registration instructions provided at the table, but even these are very clear ;-).

Besides linens or a sleeping bag, you'll want to bring a pillow and towels. And in October in Maryland, you might need a jacket or sweater, especially in the late night/early morning. Check the weather forecast as the date approaches.

Hope to meet you there!

Jenny...how 'bout if I/we make sure you get an official hardcopy sign-up document?...will send you email and you can send address.

In the meantime..arrive Friday after 4pm or so...you can stay till Monday morning, though the festivities really end Sun. nite..(hmmm...I guess it does end up being Monday morn. for some!!! ) it will all be spelled out...meals ARE included with the full price..(there ARE alternate arrangements...primarily for locals who day-trip)yep...you provide linens/bedroll...they provide mattress on bunk...

Official sheet has space for preferences in food, type of accomidations..(quiet, non-snoring.(means we supply ear pugs)..*grin*..etc..) then assignments are made by our 'housing committee'..some manuvering is possible if things look awkward after you get here..(hey..it's mostly dormitory...) there are always surprises..we just strive to make them pleasant ones..

Ok ... I checked out the fsgw site and still have some questions re The Getaway:

1. What day of Columbus Day weekend does it actually start and what time?

2. Which day does it actually end and what time?

3. How do I reserve cabin space?

4. Do I bring my own linens?

5. Are meals in included in the above-mentioned costs? Or are they separate?

6. Do you need payment prior to The Getaway? Or do we pay when we arrive.

If this sounds anal, sorry! I travel alone and I don't like surprises at the end of my journey. Thanks ... jenny
