I have been teaching music to deaf kids for ages now and we have always used percussion instruments because the vibrations can be easily felt now I am looking to move on to doing something different with them and last night I was impressed by a cello player and the fact that there are three body contact points on it to allow the vibrations to be transmitted. I think a viola might work as well.

My budget is non existant so I am looking for a cheap cello/viola (preferably free) in the UK it doesnt have to be brilliant its just a starting point to see how they take to it- anyone any advice

Thanks Sue

Ages ago we taught guitar to a deaf girl (with good lip reading). She could hear enough guitar by the vibration but sometimes needed to lean her chin on the body. Not as strange a position as it sounds. She found lower notes easier, which makes some sense of the cello /viola idea.

You also can put octave strings on a fiddle and get a chin-cello out of it, or baritone fiddle. Needs a strong neck on the fiddle-- more string tension. SuperSensitive makes them.

Best by far is cello I would imagine, much more wood to transmit vibrations to the body of the "listner/player". To be honest though, the chance of getting a "free" instrument are very slim I would say, however, I have an idea which may be of help. Will PM you.

Violins (of all sizes) are my business. If I get a 'cello that I can afford to give you, I'll let you know.

I have a viola you can have. Its not wonderful and needs new strings but it is playable. I don't play it anymore and it would be nice to know that its going to a good cause. PM me if you are interested. Im in East London.

Here's a good way to get a free cello that seems a decent box. (I've heard of that Strad-i-something guy and he's supposed to be good.)

But you have to be
(very) talented, lucky and Canadian to qualify.

Failing that, I'm thinkin' Khatts got the best offer likely...
