from new applications of old terms. In
the Chat today we have come up with a couple.
Anyone have any others?

I spent the weekend at the Essex County Club so I could attend all the festivities for my nephew Tom's and his bride Carrie's wedding in Manchester by the Sea. We all came down to breakfast the first morning to discover a desert for a breakfast. Ever have toast with no butter? The little foil wrapped packets were actually chocolate. We enjoyed? the incontinental breakfast.

i was just thinking (as i was pulling weeds in the garden)
that BLOG might mean weB LOg. Any one know of the actual
origin of this term? I have been only hearing it recently.


oh and yes, my favorite "sniglet" is the name given to
restaurant workers (waiters, waitresses) who grind pepper
onto your salad (soup, etc.) the Peppier (pep-ee-ay)

I've always thought of the sommelier as the "wino" and the waiter who pulled the cork out of the bottle of wine as a "jerker."

Been there, done that. 'Misophist' is a new word. The official definition is ' a man who eats peanut butter while contemplating a mirage.' Sort of the opposite of philosopher.

While splitting wood for the stove one day I discovered "octify". If "rectify" indicates finding a solution to a problem..Octify fixes that problem into eight pieces...Along those lines, it has since become a standard of mine used when smashing something to bits.

Then there is "Glork" the sound a bullet makes when it hits a meaty, fleshy body. Usually reserved for TV.

And Spooge, anything unpleasant and usually unidentifiable that is left somplace it shouldn't have.

Spooged, stepping in, or getting spooge on your person.

While technically not a NEW word, I use howrya alot.

George Orwell devoted one of his essays to what he saw as a lack of words in some areas of the English lexicon. One of the samples he cited was nostalgia, around which there were nuances of emotion for which no words yet existed. Anyway, he seemed to think he was stuck with whatever was then available. for he observed that "the art of writing lies largely in the perversion of words." I appreciate the ingenuity shown here in carrying our vocabulary to new heights, but I think the Orwellian view still holds good for the moment.

Ah yes Susan, you are indeed correct, but locally spooge has grown beyond the definition that you refer to. Bubble gum on hot pavement is spooge as is baby puke. Around here you can get spooged by a skunk, or by a water balloon. If I were to take a high dive off onto pavement, what remained of me would most likely be refered to as spooge. That unknown, unidentifible green stuff that grows in my fridge is technically spooge as well. A pedestrian, a mud puddle, and a careless driver are ingredients for a good spooging.

I have heard SPLORK used as a replacement for a particularly messy GLORK. perhaps, this is a spooge/glork combination...

I should have Quat long ago, but I'm still looking to octify a broken computer, I hope I dont glork someone and turn them into spooge when I toss this thing out of the window!!!

Tonights offering was 'pnone' - that word given to phones that ring but on answering them, there is never anyone there.

i often create new words from typos
today i created 2 new seasons
wummer and sinter
i presume one is 1/2 way between winter and summer
and the other is 1/2 way between summer and winter..
perhaps these are the autumnal and vernal equinoxes?!

Hmm, half way between wummer and sinter or sinter and wummer would lead me to imagine that they should be more correctly refered to as fring and spall or fang and sprill.

I took a soundboard from a 100 year old German piano (the piano didn't work anyway) and "reinguitarnated" into the face of my resophonic guitar. The guitar I built is my own unique hybrid cross between a Dobro and a National style resonator so I call it a "Nobro".

Many years ago, I had a very destructive kitten. It was then that I came up with the term kittastrophe. When you hear a crash, and the kitten comes charging down the hall, and hides in the closet, you know there's been another kittastrophe.

open mike, believe me the piano felt nothing. It was already dead. Actually the soundboard is the spruce resonator on the back of all upright pianos and doesn't weigh much atall. I think you are refering to the what's known as the harp (in pianny terminalology) that thing which holds all of the strings in place and is made of some serious metal. It is connected to the soundboard but can be extrickated with one rusty bladed, worn-out, skillsaw. At least, that's what I used. Old Sarky is what I call mine.

The guitar, on the other hand, has been in a comma <(no, that's not a typo) for years ever since but through constant vigilance, reconstructive surgery, physical therapy and a lifetime of kemo we're hoping that eventually it will make a miraculous recovery as a salad bowl or planter some day.

LadyJean sounds like your wee kitten could have used some Kittatonic to mellow out. I here it's on sale at the Mudcat Farmusee.

A friend and I are godparents to 4 kids. He insists on referring to us as God and Goddess; I consider us to have 50-50 shares in 3 goddettes and 1 godling.

I also have another 2 (1 boy, 1 girl) in another family, but they don't use the term 'godmother'. The Dad suggested earth mother, which makes me feel like the Goddess of Willendorf (OK - there may be similarities, but I'm in denial) so if ANYONE can think of a better word, please let me know!

An acquantance of mine in the early 70's used a unique term all his own... "kreech"

It meant to react with horror, disgust, etc, as in "When I saw that horrible mess in the kitchen I just kreeched!"

To kreech properly involved a sharp, noisy intake of breath through clenched teeth (not through the nostrils!), accompanied by a pained facial grimace, pulling back the lips, contorting the facial muscles, and squinting the eyes.

A really good kreech was quite impressive.

I believe the Douglas Adams book is called "The Meaning of Lif". It gives new creative meanings to place names (of course they are all in the UK). I might get round to finding it one day when I unpack all my books.

I also invented some Australian ones a few years ago (the list is also lost somewhere in the bowels of the house). I am just trying to recall some of them:

Sydney - a position between sitting and kneeling
The Grampians - a condition suffered by old people early in the morning
Woolwich - what you get from wearing some types of jumpers
Mildura - those stubborn marks you can't get off bathroom tiles, also known as Greystanes
Forbes - a creeping feeling in the stomach from that curry you ate last night
