The Saturday was excellent, both the guests and the high standard of floor singers. An impressive line-up for the weekend deserved a good turn-out. Thanks to Mark for the kind words (and I must add that his own guitar playing is well worth listening to, not to mention his singing. I especially enjoyed his very fine version of Christmas 1914). And thanks to Hilary (MGAS) for the Anklung! Of the many things I expected at the weekend, this was not one. I hope when I see you again I'll have a tune on it for you. Thanks to the organisers for putting on a great weekend, and thanks to all of them for making us so welcome again (especially Harry, Pauline, Bernard and Dave). We hope to be there for the next one. Harry and I have been down to the Railway and Linnet this afternoon to put the furniture back and collect my gear... it feels so strange going back to an empty room! Thanks to everyone who turned up in their thousands... okay, perhaps I exaggerate slightly...! But what a wonderful weekend we had! Sunday saw a club record turnout of singers - 22 altogether - and it's the first time we weren't able to let everyone have a second 'turn'... maybe we should start a bit sooner next time!!? We had 17 on Saturday (erm, remind you of a song?!), with a total of 26 over the entire weekend. Everyone has really said already what I would have wanted to say - and thanks for all those kind words about me. The atmosphere was magic from start to finish, and I wouldn't like to try to single out any one person for extra praise, as you were all terrrriffffick! The guests were all brilliant in their own way, and all tastes were catered for. We all have our own personal favourites, but it isn't fair to imply that they were any better than the rest, so I won't! Harry managed to sell a few of his newly-released CD, we're pleased to say, and I even sold one of mine!! It will soon be March... and Extravaganza 6!! See you all then? Better get me skates on - down to GMR studios to make a nuisance of myself on Alio's 'Sounds of Folk'... TTFN B |

Subject: RE: Manchester: Extravaganza 5 From: Matthew Edwards Date: 20 Oct 03 - 10:38 AM Alio, what a pity you missed it but Bernard has been busy (where does he find the time?) and has posted details of the weekend here - with pictures Extravaganza 5 It was a lovely weekend, and the Railway and Linnet provided an excellent venue with many of the guests paying tribute to this new home of the Open Door. The room felt very comfortable and the sound quality felt good - most memorably so when John Kirkpatrick played 'When Jones' Ale Was New', but the strength of the building's fabric was also tested by 'When All Men Sing' led by Rich in an incredibly deep bass voice. There was also a delightful moment when George, at the top of the room, was singing his heartwarming song about the fair when he was joined in the chorus from the back of the room by Hilary - and the two voices made a wonderful bridge of sound across the room. It was quite noticeable that the guest artists responded to the warm and friendly atmosphere, and gave very relaxed performances - singing and playing with an infectious spirit of enjoyment. I loved hearing Roger Edwards (no relation!) talking with such vivid enthusiasm about the tunes he and Martin played. So thanks to Pauline and John for organising this event, to Bernard for conducting the singarounds with such élan,to the staff of the Railway for hosting this event (especially Adèle for her cheerful helpfulness) and, on a personal note, to Harry and Sara for their hospitality, but above all to all the artists, and singers and audience who together made this so memorable. |

Great day Saturday - thanks to all who organised for making things go so well. Couldn't make Sunday because of my own club commitments but it sounds like I missed another day of quality entertainment. Colum Sands at the Wooden Horse folk club was also quality entertainment but I couldn't be in two places at once unfortunately. Good to meet and listen to fellow 'catters and put a few faces to names - I could have listened to Mick all night playing his guitar - I must get more practice in with those jazz chords and runs! I've only known the Open Door crew for a short time but they've made me feel like one of the family and when chance permits - and if I can get a pass out from the Wooden Horse - I'll make it over to see you again. For me the highlights were the singarounds. In particular it was lovely to meet and hear the Mudcatters who had travelled so far to be with us. George,Hillary, Rhianna and Mick and those who live close by like Vin and Sue VG--so lovely. Our own Cath made my weekend by singing 'My Lady of Autumn' and Richard a close second with 'When all Men Sing'. Ellison, Edwards and Threlfall (apologies if I have that the wrong way round!) just get better and better and I shall never tire of hearing them. (If anybody sees Amanda will you tell her I followed her 'Handy Tip' in the shower this morning and clenching the buttocks does NOT help ME achieve high notes!!!) So pleased you arrived home safely, George. If it is any consolation, I too am in work--yawn. Bernard--wonderful organisation of the singarounds and a smashing MC even if you did run out of words (is this a first???) Thank you all for a memorable weekend and roll on March when we shall gather to do it all again--yippee. Yvonne |

John K, Tom McC and Steve T are favourites of mine anyway, but I also loved Jane and Amanda's singing, and Dave's too. I had choice spot at the front of course, don't know how they were heard at the back. Chris is almost too perfect for me, but then I'm only jealous of his guitarwork! SINGAROUNDS: Just coudn't get enough of some voices: Yvonne has to be at the top, any woman with such a velvety contralto melts me. But then - in no order: Bernard, your soundbites on the website do not do you justice, I'd happily listen to you for an evening. As indeed I would listen to Harry and his songs. And Mark. And Sue. And John R. And Pauline. Phil, and Cath. I won't flatter Hilary here, she knows what I think of her voice and she'll only get bigheaded;-). And Richard. And Bob's pipes. And...oh heck, they were all great. I would have happily attended an event with twice the time for singarounds and half for guests. Clearly the Open Door has serious depth in its singing capacity and is to be congratulated for that. VENUE: Great room, good location with respect to bar. Hey, I know there was some kerfuffle about the food on Sunday evening, but nothing that couldn't be sorted with pre-ordering in the future (at Dog Days we used to circulate a list for people to make their choice, then at a pre-arranged time we'd stop for 15 mins for everyone to get their ordered meals and bring them to their table - saves time for singarounds). Off-lining the raffle draws also helps release singaround time. But all in all, an excellent venue. BEST OF ALL for me: The people; so warm and friendly, generous and openhearted. The club is very aptly named. Thanks Pauline and the rest for the excellent organisation. Thanks John and Bernard for the quiet (yes, quiet!) beavering away and pulling of strings and toggles and pictures and cables and singers' lists, and raffle prizes and.... BEST MEMORY: Bernard's shrugging of shoulders and raising of arms to the sides helplessly with a "What can I say" after John K's first set; it reminded me of a kid discovering that Father Christmas LIVES! filakia (kisses) to all, and see you soon |

Having broached the subject with the licensee, we now can confirm that anyone with a camper van or caravan will be okay parking overnight on the land opposite the Railway and Linnet for the duration of the Extravaganza. It seems the pub used to have a sizeable car park, which the Council requisitioned and, in exchange, agreed to allow the pub the right to use the land opposite - which is often used by drivers of heavy goods vehicles for overnight parking, too. So don't forget your Yorkie bars!! |

Things seem to range from the deeply personal and trivial to profound, passing through really interesting and useful (did you give me the words for Monday morning by Cyril Tawney?) to what looks like well organised advertising (see Punch the Horse). Although when I tried to poke a bit of gentle fun at Punch on a fresh thread the editor removed it and lobed it into the original Punch thread. Ah well, its all good fun but not as much as singing and playing tunes? And I haven't even mentioned .............. |

The Open Door Folk clubs Fifth Extravaganza will be held at our new (and much improved) venue at the Railway and Linnet, Grimshaw Lane, Chadderton (near Middleton Junction) on Saturday and Sunday, the 18th. and 19th. of October. We'll be following the tried and tested formula of excellent guest spots interspersed with singarounds all under the one roof!! Guests this year are:- Saturday........Dave Burland. Tom McConville. Steve Tilston. Sunday..........Threlfall, Ellison, Edwards. Chris Foster. John Kirkpatrick. Each guest will be performing approximately two forty minute spots. Tickets are priced at £12 per day or £20 for the entire weekend.
