Just to let you all know planning has started on the first Sheffield City Folk Festival to be held hopefully 22nd, 23rd & 24th October 2004.I presented a paper at the South Riding Folk Network meeting last Sunday.Hopefully a steering management committee will be set up in the next two weeks then we start planning. Any interest get in touch with me via here (have to reset my cookie now I've got a new computer) or at scf@omonmail.com. All help appreciated.

The Network will certainly do its best to help with this; Jim's paper was pretty much the same as our own assessment of the potential, made a few months ago, and not pursued as yet because our volunteer workers are already over-extended. The important thing is to draw in a team of interested parties who will be able to work together effectively, and who are in a position to devote the time to it that will be required. We need to avoid the mistakes that have been made in the past with previous attempts at reviving the Sheffield Festival (it ceased, originally, because the local authority, and BBC Radio Sheffield, were no longer able to provide funding and logistic support); Jim understands that, and, if we are careful, there seems to be a pretty good chance that we can make a go of this. Funding opportunities are potentially better at the moment than they have been for some years.

Last time I looked, yes. There are places named after it in Canada and the USA, I believe.

Thanks all for the support so far. Of course R & W R your name was on't list from your expertise. I hope as Malcolm says to learn from the mistakes of the past. My 'vision' is for it to be different enough by being in the Autumn. I also know not to put all the eggs in one basket and as I work currently in the community and voluntary sector my knowledge and awareness of funding and the fact you can lose it just as quickly as you get it is paramount in my mind. I hope there can be a role for everyone who wants to be involved.
