Yes, no problem. Many hosting companies using open-source solutions for security and functionality also support all the FrontPage extensions. One hosting company you might wish to evaluate is ImHosted.com. Their pricing is good and you get more for your money. They support e-commerce (shopping cart, credit cards) if you ever want to get into that. Their uptime is 99.998%, the number of sites per server is very low and they refuse to host porn sites and the like. I don't have any experiences with ImHosted but I think I'm going to use them for a couple of sites I have to build.

Thanks Mark - I'll check that site out. One question though: If I use Frontpage as my web designer, will that work with sites that don't use Microsoft OSs?

If folks are looking for a hosting company for a website, the first place to look should be the Netcraft site. There you can learn a great deal of important information about selected hosting companies; the technologies they use, their uptime, their performance, failures, etc. One page you'll want to visit is their Hosting Providers table that compares the top performing hosting companies. This table may be sorted on different columns by clicking on the column heading. One important sort you'll want to see is the listing by operating system. This will help you avoid hosting companies using Microsoft products. I'm not angry at Microsoft, it's just that their OS products are down a lot more often and have many widely-exploited security flaws.

Once you've visited a few hosting sites, compare features like storage size, data volumes, tools and facilities to help with your final choice.

Hello all,

I refreshed this thread to ask a couple questions. I'm thinking about taking my 2 websites off my "free" AT&T hosting space and get domain names for them. The 2 questions are:

1) Both sites could have some ads on them to hopefully pay for them - how do I get hooked up with companies who will be willing to pay me for the ads?

2) One of my sites' subject is TV theme lyrics - of course I don't own the rights to them (any more than Mudcat does). Will running ads on the site get me in trouble?

Thanks!

I use UK2.net which gives me web re-direction (and e-mail too) for the two year fee. They put an ad at the top of the page which I have been getting rid of but they have just stopped that. The real pages are with Waitrose.com (supermarket) who provide webspace. It would be easier to pay UK2.net 1 GBP per month to get rid of the banner but I would still use another organisation to store my (ad free) pages. Having said that 200 pages would take more than 20Mb particularly with pix so you are going to need payed for webspace.
I can send and recieve e-mails from the domain name which ultimately all come into the same (free) UK2 e-mail box. Which is funded from the dial-up call charges. I use all sorts of e-mail adresses to audit spam.
There are many similar deals but you do have to read the fine print.

A lot of hosts also provide the domain name along with the hosting package.

Do make sure your copyrights are taken care of - your host could actually be sued as well, so they tend to be sensitive about complaints.

A lot of mudcatters can recommend hosting. I have recently started a hosting company if you want to check that out.

Advice on hosting is country specific. In the UK you should be able to get web space as part of your ISP package.

You can also get hosting separately, either:
"free" - ie with popups or banner ads
or paid for.

Term to watch - bandwidth - how much data can be accessed by visitors. IF you are providing music this can get eaten up quickly.

Sort out your basic site design on your PC
THEN
Find somewhere to host it
THEN
Worry about domain names

I just purchased a domain from web.com for $6.95 per year. My hosting is provided by a company called Nevidia.com. It costs $3.50 per month (billed monthly to a card. I used MS Front page to build the site. It is as yet a single page, but I have much room to grow. The web page is: http://www.reanes.com

The site has been up for a week now and I will be adding to it as time permits.

The folks at Nevidia.com are the greatest! I have heard much from others about service or more correctly lack of it. They often say if you need too contact the 'help desk' it takes days for a reply. Not so with Nevidia, the longest wait I ever had was about thirty minutes for a reply to a problem to hit my mail box. They are VERY helpful, which is excellent for a novice like myself!

Laura, one more advice: before putting lyrics on your page, make sure the copyright owner is not against it - otherwise you might get into trouble...

Yes, good advice from Misophist, but of course you are psyched up now and ready to jump in with both feet. If you can get hold of 50 megs of space you will be content for a while and text pages (lyrics, stories etc) take up very little space. Fifty pictures will not load up the room on the server they give you either. Sound files...will suck up loads of room though but fifty megs will still be okay.
I started with 30 freebie megs (with hellaciously annoying popups) and went nuts soon after and bought space from a real ISP company. Great people, superb technical support and very little downtime. I'm up to 78 megs of the 150 allotted under the plan and Tweed's Blues is fairly expansive with closets full of old crap, songs, pics, stories, parables, message board rants, Mudcat CD adverts etc. Nothing like what is stored here at the Cat, but more than I ever figured I'd end up with. I am hopelessly addicted to the thing now and have met and corresponded with the most gifted and cool bunch of people in this world you could ask for. I say just do it and figure it out later,...I have spent many late nites figurin' stuff out and redoing things;~).
Budget Web Hosts Check these out. Many will set you up with your domain name at an additional annual fee. Fun, Fun, Fun~~

Yerz,
Tweed

Good advice, misophist

Laura,

Read misophist's comments, then read them again. Go away for a week and do some research, then read misophist's comments again.

If you still have any queries, ask away...

In retrospect, perhaps you need some definitions. Buying a domaine name gives you nothing but the right to use that name as a web address for a certain period; as in "www.mudcat.org". What you really mean, I think is web hosting; having someone put your site on a server so people can see it. You need to get your contents together so you have some idea how big your site will be. It wouldn't be an entirely bad idea for you to the whole web site ready to go before seeking a web host. This is where it gets complicated. This is also where I run out of suggestions. Except for this: in the long run good service is worth a few extra dollars. Ask around.

There are many companies authorized to sell (rent, really) top level domaine names. Any one will do, just get the best deal you can find. The size of the site has nothing to do with this part of things. That's between you and your ISP and the cost depends on how popular the site becomes. Your ISP can explain that aspect of it best. Remember to put a note on your calender so you don't forget to renew at the right time. In building your site, remember that many people still use dial up and slow modems, so try to control individual page sizes.

Hi there,

I want to start up a website dedicated to my favourite folk singer but whenever I try to buy a domain ( if that's what you call it ) I come across all these companies offering all sorts of things for a range of prices and I don't know which is best for me, or which companies I can trust.

I do want to have quite a big website eventually, with lots of pages of lyrics and some stories. I would think that that would maybe take up about 100 to 200 pages. I would like to include links to other sites ( like mudcat!).

There wouldn't be too many photos; maybe 50 photos in total. Perhaps less.

Can any mudcatters advise me ?
