I first learned on a Selmer in the 1960s. Solid silver but I don't know the model. It was old then, and had the non-standard open G#. It was rather quiet but sounded nice.

Uh I play a Selmer Flute and I think it's pretty good although I'm not very experienced so...take it or leave it, I guess...

Dear Ella,

Selmer make reasonable student and intermediate level flutes in the USA (they are owned by Steinway) but, as Spaw says, they are less well-known for their flutes than their saxes.

I have serviced a few in the past and they are certainly decent instruments for the level they made for. The 200 series seem to be the superior models. I've also worked on a couple of older and nice Selmer flutes.

Best to try one out and see what you think and compare with some others. Spaw has suggested Gemeinhardt which are good and Pearl and Yamaha in a similar price range are worth looking at amongst others.

Basically it really depends on the model but Selmer is far better known for their saxes and clarinets. I know that Selmer recently added a student model under the Selmer name as well. I think it would depend on the price, how it played, and what they are looking for (type of music, silver head, open hole, B foot, etc.). If they're looking for a higher quality instrument I'd look more at Gemeinhardt or start looking for classic Haynes and the like. Gemeinhardt is still making some outstanding instruments IMHO.

I think it's an origninal.... have not seen it yet - it's second hand - I've told a friend about the advert I saw and they asked me (because I play other flutes) to have a look at it for them... just wanted to know whay they are like...
