The Ke'au Crater Boys. One of them is the best 'uke player I've heard.
"On Fire" is one of their cds.
I like Keola Beamer too- His Mauna Kea, especially. Each of these slack key masters has his own style; I don't worry about 'tradition' here.
John Keawe and his "Auhele" is one of the most inventive collections. His "Whale Song," and Auhele," will stick in your mind.

Keali'i Reichel does good work on "Lei Hali'a.

Am I the only one who likes Keola Beamer? Mauna Kea (White Mountain Journal) and the next one, I forget its name, in particular.
Check out Dancing Cat CDs for a lovely collection of slack key and singing, included many mentioned above by Q.
Others tell me Beamer's not as traditional as, say, Ray Kane, but I love the laid back pace of his recordings.
For modern trad music, there's also Keol'ihi Reichel(something like that for the first word).
Blessings,
Barbara

Songs of the Hawaiian Cowboy, various (Warner)
Kika Kila and Ki Ho'alu, Bob Brozman and Ledward Kaapana; steel and slack.
Ray Kane, Punahele, slack guitar
Ledward Kaapana, Led Live

Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau, Ho'ola; Mahalo, Ke Akua; No Kristo; Ke Aluala.

From outside the traditions-
Willie K. singing "O Holy Night." The best ever rendition and almost impossible to get. Anyone willing to sell me a copy??

And for old Hawaiian style pop, get "Honolulu to Hollywood." Old stuff from the 20s and 30s.
You haven't lived until you hear "A Wee Doech an' Doris," by Sol Bright and his Hollywaiians (1934)

Led Kaapana is my current favorite. I also really like the duets he's done with Bob Brozman.

A primer on slack key would include Gabby Pahinui and Atta Isaacs, and would also include the late Sonny Chillingworth.

Sure you want real Hawiian and not Hawaiian flavored popular music?

Early slide guitar is often credited to Hawaiians and is still as much fun as any music ever made. Look for Andy Iona as one example.

One more link for you...someone else's 25 best Hawaiian CDs, "evah". I haven't heard most of them, but the artist, Palani Vaughn, of the last set listed is really excellent judging by a tape I have of him.

Kalama's Quartet from Arhoolie. The lyrics are in Hawaiian, so it won't matter of they're clean or not. Great Hawaiian guitar and vocals.

Heya2L's,

There is a great thread on Slack Key in which I mention my fav. CD of that type of Hawaiian music. Mark Cohen and others listed some great links, too.

Also, if you put "slack key" in the SuperSearch, there are other related threads on Hawaiian songs/musicians which come up.

Sounds like a neat plan for your students,

kat

My current favorite is the album Ohana (means family) by Dennis Kamakahi. He is a slack-key guitarist and vocalist. The album also features his son David on ukulele and vocals. I particularly love the song He'eia from this album. I think it's on Dancing Cat Records.

Do you want real Hawaiian music like slack-key guitar or polynesian lyrics? You may be looking for popular music with Hawaiian flavor, such as "My Little Grass Shack...".

The local libraries and music stores have squat in the way of decent (or any!!) Hawaiian music. I guess I'll have to order something. I want to use it in my music classes, so lyrics have to be clean!
Most important of all, ukuleles must be part of the ensemble!
