The Top of Coom outside Kilgarvan Co. Kerry is the highest. It even has access recognisable as a road since the wind turbines were constructed all around.

My husband was born in Roundwood, Co. Wicklow. His family owned what was then agreed to be the highest pub in ireland - The Vartry Heights.   Subsequently on his travels he met up with a lady who reckoned she was the owner of the highest pub in Ireland - which is in Coolea, Co. Cork.

The argument has not been resolved!!

When staying near and drinking in Roundwood way back in the late 60's I was given to understand that it was the highest village in Ireland. I can't for the life of me remember the names of the pubs there but it was in one of them that I was propelled on to the stage by my (so called) mates one Saturday night and introduced as "one of the lads from England is going to give us a song". My first ever time in front of an audience. It must have gone down reasonably well as I returned to our table to find it covered in pints of black stuff donated by tone deaf locals. I'm stil not sure how we managed to drive back to our tents that night.

A glance at a contour map makes me wonder why the highest *anything* in Ireland should be of note. I am reminded of a time when I caused some hilarity among friends in Colorado by mentioning that in New Hampshire one could get some kind of formal recognition of having climbed all peaks higher than 4000 ft.

Also, I once heard that the highest point in (I think it was) Iowa was in somebody's cornfield, and the owner had left a path to the nearest road for the use of tourists, with a sign saying "Trail to Summit". But that is the kind of thing people make up.

Dunno about the highest pub in Ireland, but I've drunk in what I preume must have been the most westerly pub in Ireland, and logically the most westerly pub in Europe. It was over forty years ago, so I can't remember much about it, but we were camped on the cliffs just opposite the Great Blasket and the pub was within walking distance. So it must have been in Ballyickeen.

Our email is :- [e-mail]. If you drop us a line we will sort you out with directions etc. We normally play up at the high pub on thursday evenings (10.00 onwards) and sunday afternoons (5.00 onwards. It's a very laid back 'join in' sort of thing and everyone is welcome. Other sessions nearby are Kilgarvan on a tuesday night at 'Paudies' pub, and friday night at ballingeery, at 'seortons'. All very welcoming for singers and musicians.

AS far as I know, the highest pub in Ireland is " The Ponderosa" on top of the Glenshane Pass on the road from Derry to Donegal. I know it is definitely the highest in Ulster, after reading the above posts, perhaps it's only the 2nd highest in Ireland. I myself have been quite high in some of the lowest pubs on the island.

Gerry - it was a very brief weekend trip, for a special birthday meal in the Park Hotel, and apart from me, Tim Edwards and Jum Mageean singing to ourselves in the Park Hotel we didn't even get to any music. Will have to make another trip some time.

We regularly attend the session at Top o Coom with John & Marie as we too, live in the area although we have to confess to living on the Cork side of the mountain.

Spent a few days with Marie & John about a year ago. The highest pub in Ireland is just up the road from the oldest pub in Ireland! It's a lovely area and musicians are really welcome in the pubs. I'm the first case of Guinness-induced diabetes I've heard of - my own fault entirely!!

To get to Top of Coom....try for the Beara Peninsula, take a left on the road out of Ballyvourney where you should be going straight, climb a rather steep road along side a raging torrent of a brook, and don't let the sheepdog that lies in wait on the side of that road scare you. When the road flattens a bit and you think you can see the other side, look to your left and there is a pub there.

It helps if your just off the plane and are still a bit groggy; if you have three maps and a grand sense of adventure; and you haven't had your first Guinness.

I'm guessing that it was about 5 km west of Ballyvourney...just before leaving Cork for Kerry.

We live in the Glanlee Valley, the townland is 'Mouying', not Coolea. Coolea is actually a village nearby, approximately 8 miles away. 'The Beauty Spot Glanlee' is a well known local song complete with tune, and many of the locals sing this very long song regularly, including eileens daughter from the top of coom.The song was written many years ago by a previous neighbour of ours, sadly no longer with us.We never actually got to meet him, but the song is very descriptive of the area and the warm and friendly nature of the people who live here, although the person that wrote this song had never been to any of the far flung places mentioned in it. The top of coom is our 'local' , and we normally play there on Sunday afternoons (5.00pm onwards) and Thursday evenings(10.00pm onwards Ish). If anyone wants directions we would be happy to provide them.

The ESB in Coolea is usually known as 'Fifty Years Ago' Not got time to check under this title as I'm off to Otley in 10 mins
The pub in Wicklow is Johnnie Fox's but they don't give their altitude! It is extensively advertised and more than a little larger than the hidden gem in Coolea.

I have pleasant memories of several visits to the Top of Coom, thanks to the warm hospitality of Eonie and Rachel O'Suillibhan of Coolea, and have heard My Home in Sweet Glenlea in a pub in Ballymakeera (just down the road from Ballyvourney). The Coom is also mentioned in the song The ESB in Coolea. Both these songs are in The Songs of Cork. I'll post more info about that wonderful little book when I get home.

A cursory search of the DT did not turn up ESB in Coolea. I'll see if I can enter the words and post them soon.

I have heard that three pubs claim the "highest pub" distinction: the Top of Coom, one in the Wicklows and one in Donegal (I think).

Top of Coom, at 1056ft, is reputed to be the highest pub in Ireland and has connections with the late Sean O'Riada whose family home is at nearby Ballyvourney. If not the highest (Johnny Foxes also lays claim) it must be the most 'schizophrenic' as the pub is in Kerry and the land surrounding it is in Cork - an interesting situation last week during the all Ireland Hurling championship!
Had a wonderful session there last Thursday with local muscians and singers and more recent arrivals including Ray and Verna (Upton etc.) and John and Marie (Ingleton) Thanks to the Landlady's daughter Julie for a great evening/early morning - if you're ever going over the Cork and Kerry mountains don't forget to call in.
