The International Concertina Association is selling a tape that contains this song. (Click to play an MP3 file.)

I took Peace's lyrics, incorporated David Jones' corrections, and then listened to the recording to make a few more corrections.

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
(Charles O'Hegarty)

1. Now there's all kinds of people who people this earth.
Some people they judge people by what they are worth.
Some people they hate people. That must be the worst.
We're not really so different as we might seem at first.

2. Now there's dog walkers, big talkers, gold buyers and old flyers,
Ice sellers, and nice fellers, tug boaters, smug voters,
Rose planters, prose chanters, city slickers and guitar pickers,
Dizzy worriers and busy furriers and men who hang around all day long and don't do much all.

CHORUS:
But there's one thing in common and I really must say,
We're all happy when the sun shines and it's a beautiful day.
For there's one thing in common and I really must say,
We're all happy when the sun shines and it's a beautiful day.

3. Now there's faith healers, safe stealers, bar tenders and car benders,
Pawn brokers, pot smokers, red haters and head waiters,
Beer drinkers and clear thinkers, cello bowers, hello belowers,
Rock-and-rollers and save-your-soulers and men who stuff hard boiled eggs into their mouths to get their name in the Guinness Book of Records.
CHORUS

4. Now there's store looters, sure shooters, baton twirlers, banner furlers,
Money lenders and funny spenders, sit-in leaders and pigeon feeders,
Pub singers and club singers, vandalizers, scandalizers,
Aristotlers and whiskey bottlers, and men who try to play the squeezebox with strange-sounding songs on this tape.
CHORUS TWICE

Right. I missed out the 's' and I can't spell anyway. Much rhyming slang has moved into every day usage without the user fully understanding the origin.

That's "Aristotlers". "Aristotle" is rhyming slang for "bottle", which is short for "bottle & glass", which is rhyming slang for "fuck in the arse". Thus, Aristotlers are buggers. This is all explained by Robert Graves in his amusing essay "Lars Porsena". He in turn needed to have it explained to him, discreetly, after he happened to mention Aristotle while conversing in a pub, and was indignantly told by the proprietor that that sort of language wasn't allowed there.

I recorded "Brautiful Day" many years ago. it is on a CD called "Songs of Exquisite Taste". See   davidjones.ws.

Some corrections to the text printed in a previous post.

1st verse:   BIG talkers; SMUG voters; ROSE planters; PROSE chanters;

2nd verse:   CELLO BOWERS; HELLO BELOWERS.

3rd verse:   STORE LOOTERS; SURE SHOOTERS; BATON twirlers; BANNER
             FURLERS; SIT IN LEADERS; PUB singers. ARITOTERLERS;
             Whisky BOTTLERS.
Charlie changed the last line of each verse to suit the situation.
In the opening line I think he sang; all KINDS of people.
There is a mudcat thread re. Charlie saying that he just died, does anyone have any info.?

IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Charles O'Hegarty

There's all sorts of people who people this earth.
Some people judge people by what they are worth.
Some people hate people and that's really the worst,
for we're really not so different as we might seem at first.

Chorus:
But there's one thing in common and I really must say,
We're all happy when the sun shines and it's a beautiful day.
and there's one thing in common and I really must say,
We're all happy when the sun shines and it's a beautiful day.

There's dog walkers, feet? talkers, gold buyers and old flyers
ice sellers, and nice fellers?,
tug boaters, smug? bolters?,
roast? chanters?, ? chanters?
city slickers and guitar pickers
dizzy worriers and busy furriers
and men who hang around all day long and don't do much all

There's faith healers and safe stealers, bar tenders and car benders
pawn brokers and pot smokers, red haters and head waiters
beer drinkers and clear thinkers
?? and lowly rollers
rock and rollers and save your soulers
and men who stuff hard boiled eggs into their mouths to get their name in the guiness book or records

now there's straw? linters?, shaw? shooters,
patent? twirlers?, batten? furlers?,
moneylenders and funny spenders,
??ing meters and pigeon feeders,
pop singers and club singers, vandalizers, scanalizers,
aristotleists and whiskey bottleists,
and men who try to play the squeezebox with strange sounding songs on this tape

Apparently its name is "Beautiful Day". FWIW, I have it on a tape cassette by David Jones called _Songs of Exquisite Taste_. I have no text, but I suppose I could copy it out if people were desperate. A Google search on "whisky bottlers & aristotlers" is bootless.

This song by Charlie O'Hegarty begins with the verse:

"There's all sorts of people who people this earth.
Somw people judge people by what they are worth.
Some people hate people and that's really the worst,
for we're really not so different as we might seem at first.

Later verses have long twisting lists of different kinds of people with the chorus:

But there's one thing in common and I really must say,
We're all happy when the sun shines and it's a beautiful day.

Any one know the other verses?

Glen
