I'll be there with our ShoreGrass band on Saturday night at 7:00 in the chorus room doing "Civil War Songs." We'll do a selection of songs popular during the war as well as songs written about the war in later years, plus ballads, hymns and songs of the past and present representing both the Union and the Confederacy. (We actually call it "Songs of the Civil War Era" since it's not limited to war songs, but that's the title they put in the program...)

I see a few other mudcat names on the grid, including Animaterra, Sandy & Caroline Paton, Kendall Morse, Jerry Rasmussen.

Who else? Who's going?

Kendall, I understand, as I've had my share of vocal troubles, though nothing like yours. My voice is fairly stable these days, which is why I'm singing in 3 workshops at NOMAD! In addition to "Songs and chants of the world's traditions" which is a snapshot of the kind of music my chorus sings, I'm singing 3 Irish songs in a 4 pm Saturday workshop offered by my sweetie (listed as Morning Star tho' that's the name of his English country dance band!). Also, they just gave me the Sat. 10 am song swap session, which will be chorus songs. So y'all come along and sing!

I'm doing a workshop at 1:00 on Sat. called Ballads, Broadsides and Hymns or Songs I Learned From Helen Schneyer. Joining me will be my friends John and Linda Henry (Worcester County Tradition), Lee Townsend, Jim Bean and Steve Sullwold. Should be fun. A couple of the songs are ones she has not recorded. I taped them years ago and rediscovered them when deciding to do this workshop. At 2:00pm I'll be joining Worcester County Tradition in their workshop Blues, Rags and Gospel. Hope to see a few familiar faces.

The NOMAD grids are not downloading onto my computer, even with Adobe Acrobat open. All I get are blank pdf pages. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Can anyone help me?

Anyway, NOMAD sent me a confirmation last month that I'll be doing two events:

Woody Guthrie Jam Session and Song Swap: Saturday, 11/15/03 at 10:00 AM.

Woody Guthrie's Musical Evolution: Saturday, 11/15/03 at 7:00 PM.

The first of these is self-explanatory. Bring your voices, instruments, and favorite Guthrie songs to share. Everyone is welcome to participate, including children, and I will try to let as many people as possible lead a song. I will bring one or two of Woody's lesser known songs, Blow, Big Wind, Blow being my most likely first choice.

The second is a presentation of some of Woody's songs, including some of his lesser known songs, within their historical, musical, and biographical context. Don't panic, it's not all lecture! There will be plenty of group singing.

I've done one or the other or both of these workshops before at NEFFA, PMN, NY Pinewoods Fall Weekend, Fall Fling, and the Eisteddfod-NY. Those of you have been to one are certainly welcome back. There are always new twists, turns, and surprises, as well as the opportunity to sing all the Woody Guthrie favorites again.

Oh yes, my dear friend and some time musical partner Anne Price will also be performing at NOMAD. If I could only download the grid I would tell you what she is doing and when, but whatever it is you'll enjoy it. I hope we are not up against one another, but if that happens, take your pick. Or come to half of each event. Either way you'll have a good time.

Steve, the grids are LARGE. I just sat here and waited. Got a cup of coffee, knitted a sweater, ran out to buy some cheese (in Wisconson) and when I came back, the grid for Sat had loaded just fine.

I'm beginning to doubt I'll go. This has gotta be the biggest 'buck for the bang' festival for me (and I've skipped the last couple of years), mainly because of hotel costs and CT gasoline prices. I may still end up there though.

It ain't worth waiting for the download, now that a NOMAD festival grid arrived in the regular mail.

Jeri, I do hope to see you again, if not at NOMAD then at NEFFA. Maybe we'll find time to do more than say "hello" while passing in the hallway. As for the cost/benefit ratio, I've never been to NOMAD before, so it's worth at least one visit.

Meanwhile, I'll be appearing at a Rock Against Racism concert in Frank Sinatra Park in Hoboken, NJ, on Sunday afteroon, October 5. RAR is the group that lost a 1989 US Supreme Court decision over the right to make amplified music in the bandshell of New York City's Central Park. I understand that they had to go to court last year against the City of Hoboken to have this concert in Sinatra Park.

I'll be appearing as part of MacDougal Street Rent Party, along with Joel Landy, Anne Price, Eric Levine, Takako Nagumo, and possibly Gina Tlamsa. I don't have any other details, other than it's heartening to know that we folkies are welcome.

Anyone who lives in the New Haven vicinity or who will be going there for the upcoming NOMAD festival has an opportunity to hear Joe Hickerson in an intimate house concert on Friday, November 14, 2003, beginning at 8:00 PM. That's the evening before the festival starts. The concert will take place in Hamden, CT, just north of New Haven. For those who don't already know, Joe Hickerson is a "vintage pre-plugged paleo-acoustic folk singer." He is the person who, in 1960, added the last two stanzas to Pete Seeger's Where Have All the Flowers Gone? thus rounding out the story. Joe's remarkable recordings on the Folk Legacy and Folkways labels span a 45-year era from 1957 to 2002. Joe is also a folklorist, ethnomusicologist, archivist, and librarian, and for 35 years he served as the Librarian and Director of the Archives of Folk Song and Folk Culture for the United States Library of Congress.

If you cannot attend the house concert, you will have a chance to hear Joe Hickerson at the NOMAD festival itself. He will be performing at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 15. Check the revised schedule when it becomes available

It looks like an interesting programme. For instance, the belly dance workshop sounds interesting and I may have been able to contribute to the morris dance workshop (20+ years experience!)

My group, MacDougal Street Rent Party, went to a studio in Jersey City, NJ, last Sunday to record a demo. It took us four and a half hours to do one song, and it still needs a final mix. I figured we would all just sit in front of microphones and sing like we always do, and the guy in the control room would just adjust the levels so all the voices and instrumemts were properly balanced. Our songs usually run less than five minutes each, so even if we did ten takes of each and allowed time for set-up and breaks, we should have been able to record three, maybe four songs in less than four hours. But no, that's not how it's done anymore. First Joel does some sound effects that resemble a dripping water faucet. Then Anne lays down the guitar chords all the way through. Then she goes and sings her part while hearing the guitar track through headphones. Then Eric sings his part. Then Joel and I sing our parts. Then Eric adds his banjo. Finally I add a second guitar part. Maybe next week Gina will come and add a fiddle.

My private thoughts: Ugh! Whatever this is, it ain't folk music. We are already halfway down the Milli Vanilli Highway.

What I say out loud: Good session. Demo sounds great so far, and it will sound even better when it's finished.

Has anyone else been there? You can tell me in person at NOMAD in Connecticut. And if NEFFA accepts us again, you can hear MacDougal Street Rent Party live this coming April in Massachusetts.

Hi Suffet. Our ShoreGrass band recorded live at Phil Rosenthal's American Melody studio in Guilford, CT. We stood around in a circle (each with our own vocal and instrument mics) doing our songs "live" like we always do, and it worked the way you hoped yours would. After laying down tracks that we liked, we went back another day to mix and balance the instruments and vocals. There are different ways to record, and unfortunately yours was the way it was rather than recording live. If your studio can't or won't do it live, there are many others that can.

I've done two albums a track at a time, and two "live." They both have their attraction. When I finally get the time to do it, my gospel quartet will be recording a track at a time. We spent a year, trying to record "live" with very little success. When we sing "live" we tend to get swept away in the song, turn our heads away from the mic, or back up... or get real close, and it was very difficult to keep a balance throughout a song. I recorded Handful of Songs and a gospel album a track at a time, and adjusted to it quickly. It made it possible for friends to add vocal or instrumental tracks at a later date, rather than having to get everyone together at one time.
And, I didn't have to settle for botched lines, or a buzzing guitar note or two. After trying it "live" again, I have to admit that I am looking forward to going back to a track at a time... it also makes it a lot easier to equalize each vocal track and instrumental track individually.

As I say, both approaches have their value. When I listen to some of the "live" tracks I recorded on my first two albums, there are places where I regret not being able to boost individual instruments or voices. To a certain extent, you end up mixing as you're recording, by trying to get the sound balanced by moving people, instruments and microphones around.

I'll be at NOMAD too, Steve, and would be happy to share both views with you. I think that you'll find that future tracks will go faster if you record track by track, but it IS a slowr way of recording..

Even though we were "live" we each had individual vocal and instrument mics and we were arranged in a big circle, which enabled very good separation of the sound. Each mic was on a separate track, and during the mixing process we were able to boost or reduce the volume of each one, thus balancing it the way we wanted and fixing places that were too loud or too soft. We were also able to fix the occasional bad note by re-recording another track (in a later session) while listening to the originals and then patching the good note in at the right spot in the mix. We were also able to add a track to make our fiddler sound like two fiddlers on Connecticut Waltz. A good sound engineer (Phil) can perform all these miracles.

The only problem I had with recording live was the dead sound of the room while recording. This was apparently necessary to get all the sound clean into the mics.

Sorry to get off on a tangent (or continue the tangent?) but it was an interesting experience that I hope to repeat. Our program at NOMAD is all Civil War songs, and I'm planning a new recording (some day in 2004) of these and additional songs from the Civil War era. I would do it again "live" for sure.

I'm getting ready for my Woody Guthrie song swap family event at NEFFA by stocking up on red string, blue ribbons, and a sheet of self-sticking 1-cent stamps, just right for sticking on one's head. The last time I tried this with kids, I also brought glue for the fingers and bubble gum to stick in the mouths, and it proved to be an unmitigated disaster.

I love listening but would love to play with others. When it says sessions dose that mean we can join in?. Sorry Ive been out on my own way to long . I have no idea how these things work .

If you go to the Internet site listed in the 1st post, you'll get all the info. It's not too late to go; you pay at the door. I assume you'd be daytripping? If not, several of us will be staying at the hotel listed on Pond Lily Road on the NOMAD site. Although many of the sessions are to listen to/sing along, others are workshops or song circles. I've gone the last few years & had a wonderful time.

I'm just home from Sat. & Sun. Yes, it was a great time with many wonderful, warm, talented people! Guy, it was a pleasure to see you (finally) in person; I hope it is just the 1st of many visits! It was great to hear your music. Jerry, as usual, it was a joy to see you, Ruth, & the Messengers & to be able to sing along w/ your powerful music! I had lunch on Sat. w/ the Beans & breakfast this am w/ them & a group of the D.C. folks. Delightful! I think the Beans may have been leading more sessions than anyone else on the program this year, but Mary LaMarca & George Stephens weren't far behind! Got to hear Sandy & Caroline Paton twice. Both Folk Legacy & CAMSCO had music available for purchase, thanks to Patons & to Dick Greenhaus & Susan of DT! Hobo Songs was ably handled by Sandy, George, & Keith Baldwin, but Kendall's absence was noted. He was missed by many! Conflicts in the schedule prevented me from hearing karenk & meeting Suffet; sorry! I did hear a little of Barbara Shaw & Frank w/ their bluegrass group, ShoreGrass. I joined Kath Westra only briefly in the Sun. am song circle, but enjoyed our time together over breakfast. Since I was unable to attend Old Songs or the GetAway this year, it was a good opportunity to renew acquaintance & make some new contacts. I saw Vixen & Reynard in the hallways & was thrilled to go to Joe Hickerson's 1-hr musical autobiography! Not only is he folk music history; he's darn funny! I enjoyed hearing Mike Kachuba on hammered dulcimer, mountain dulcimer, guitar, & concertina. I spent some satisfying time singing shape note music & even did a little contra dancing. Staying in one room & hearing "Gospel in Black & White," "Remembering Stan Rogers," & "Hobo Songs" was great! A sincere "thank you!" to the organizers & all of the generous participants! Already looking forward to next year!

There were lots of great programs, many conflicting with other great programs. And no matter what time I get there it's not early enough. An unexpected treat this time was sitting in on a workshop called "Accompaniment and Arrangements" with Jerry Epstein. That man is a warehouse of musical knowledge and ran a most fascinating session touching on unusual harmonies and new angles for accompaniment.

I also caught a few very nice minutes of Women's Voices, the last 2 songs by Too Blue, the last half of Nzinga's Daughters - hey Jerry, is Ruth related to the singer who wore chartreuse/purple? Looked like family to me - and some of the Gospel in Black and White. All most enjoyable.

The facilities are pretty nice. Nothing like the high school I went to back in the stone age. More spread out than Newtown but certainly adequate and very convenient for me. Congratulations to the folks who worked so hard to make NOMAD so much fun once again.

It was a great NOMAD. My complaint is theat there is never enough time to all the workshops that called to me, but that of course is a sign of a good schedule. It was fun to have breakfast with bbc and Rick as well as the Beans and Jerry and Clarice and Suzanne and Geroge and Mary and Kathy (we kept the Diner busy). KathW's concert set was a high light for me as was Lorraine and Bennett Hammond's concert. Women's voices was really good too I know the singing of Mary LaMarca and Kathy Westra but Lynn Noel and Diane T. were new to me but wonderful singers as well. The Hobo set worked even without Kendall (Sandy Paton, Keith Baldwin and George Stephens), but he was sorely missed. Lots of folks stayed up to see them even though it was scheduled at 10. Guys smile was infectious even before I figured out he was a mudcatter. He just beamed in each group he was in, especially when Sandy and Caroline included him in their set. You should get let out more often, Guy. The set was wonderful as the Patons always are. I enjoyed the Stan Rogers workshop that the Beans led, too. I hope that Patricia (the organizers) retirement from NOMAD doesn't mean NOMAD will retire too. Does any one know? Anyway it was very fun. Good music, good singing, good people. I'm tired Lorraine
