Subject: RE: New June Tabor CDs: Echoes of Hooves, Ashore From: GUEST,Azoic Date: 28 Feb 11 - 02:08 PM the last piece from "ashore","across the wide ocean" had me in tears. |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CDs: Echoes of Hooves, Ashore From: Herga Kitty Date: 27 Feb 11 - 05:15 PM I heard June being interviewed on Woman's Hour on Friday, and singing the Bleacher Lassie of Kelvinhaugh (because she could sing it unaccompanied). Also, her recording of The Band played Waltzing Matilda was one of Anne Owers' Desert Island discs this morning (because Anne's grandfather was sent to Souvla, and survived both Gallipoli and the Somme). Subject: RE: New June Tabor CDs: Echoes of Hooves, Ashore From: Bonnie Shaljean Date: 27 Feb 11 - 12:53 PM I've just caught another interview with her (on the iPlayer) from the BBC World Service arts programme The Strand. She's the last guest on, and she speaks so movingly about the various aspects of the sea, and the images of loss and loneliness that it calls up. I thought this was a better interview than the Women's Hour one (though that was by no means bad). Haven't heard Mike Harding's. Like fine wine, June just goes on getting better and better. This should be on the iPlayer for a few more days anyway. It's the general arts page, so you'll have to click "Thursday" for the relevant Strand programme (upper right-hand corner). Couldn't get a more detailed link than this: The Strand (Thursday) BBC World Service http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/arts/ |

Subject: RE: New June Tabor CDs: Echoes of Hooves, Ashore From: Rain Dog Date: 24 Feb 11 - 03:07 AM Mike Harding presents an hour of the very best in folk, roots and acoustic music including an interview with a grande dame of English folk: June Tabor. For more than 30 years, June has been one of the most respected singers on the folk scene, revered for her bold and clear style and masterful interpretations of songs both traditional and contemporary. June's highly anticipated new album Ashore is released on Topic Records this week, and on tonight's show you can hear her tell Mike all about it. We'll hear tracks from the album as June explains how seafaring and coastal themes inspired the song choices - choices that range from the traditional Great Silkie of Sule Skerry and I'll Go and Enlist for a Sailor, to a powerful and sparse rendition of Elvis Costello's song Shipbuilding. Ashore is June's 13th solo album in a rich and varied career characterised not only by essential solo work but also fruitful collaborations with the likes of the Oyster Band, Martin Simpson, Maddy Prior and Les Barker. You can listen to it here on the BBC iplayer until next Wednesday Mike Harding with June Tabor The section on June Tabor starts at about 21.30 minutes in |

Subject: RE: New June Tabor CDs: Echoes of Hooves, Ashore From: GUEST,Azoic Date: 18 Jan 11 - 02:23 PM I agree. The single most inmpressive vocal performance that I've ever witnessed was June and Huw Warren on piano at the East Avenue Pub/Portland,Oregon in 1989.Spellbinding. |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CDs: Echoes of Hooves, Ashore From: GUEST,bobnessuk Date: 18 Jan 11 - 09:12 AM I was fortunate enough to see Ms Tabor play twice last year. In London she sang most of the songs that make up the CD that is coming out in February. I'm far too inarticulate to comment on the quality of the work. I'll just say, I always thought Robert Wyatt's version of Shipbuilding could never be matched, until I heard June's. |

Subject: RE: New June Tabor CDs: Echoes of Hooves, Ashore From: Will Fly Date: 30 Dec 10 - 04:46 AM Azoic - I don't have any June Tabor records in my collection (can't think why) but I do love her voice when I hear it - and sometimes drop into Spotify for a listen. For what it's worth, her singing of Richard Thompson's "Strange Affair", with backing from Martin Simpson, rates very highly for me. What are your favourites? |

Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: Suegorgeous Date: 21 Dec 10 - 04:21 AM Heresy or hearsay? :) Which hearsay, where did you hear this? |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: GUEST,AZOIC Date: 20 Dec 10 - 10:13 PM According to heresay, there will be a new June Tabor cd titled "Ashore" in February 2011.It will include the Elvis Costello song "Shipbuilding". |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: shepherdlass Date: 02 Nov 04 - 08:21 AM It's a really good album - the use of instrumentation and arrangement works so well, underpinning the songs - not swamping them. The choice of material, holding her to border ballads, means there is no room for the modern material (some of which has been very "samey" on her recent albums). Vocally, "Hughie the Graeme" has more fire than you usually expect from her particular style - but the vocal detachment's still there. Personally, I find it a wonderful thing - like Lou Reed, Suzanne Vega, Norah Jones, the cool, intelligent Tabor approach is a refreshing antidote to more emotionally extreme performances (many of which are also fantastic, don't get me wrong) - but it really is down to personal taste. Don't think any other person's views will really decide you more than getting to audition a copy from the library or something. |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: GUEST,jay Date: 01 Nov 04 - 05:31 PM the piano works fine i think. just because she decided to use a piano arrangement doesn't mean its any less folk than if she decided to just use a guitar. folk music needs this kind of thing, it needs a push forward to people can hear how great it is. listen to leige and lief by the fairport convention, it still sounds great after all these years. and with new artists like alasdair roberts playing folk music, hopefully a new wave of folk musicians will be surfacing. |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: Peter K (Fionn) Date: 27 Nov 03 - 08:48 PM I also heard her on the Mike Harding show. On stage, she does have a real presence, the benefit of which was obviously lost on the radio show, where I thought she sounded as pretentious as hell, waffling on ad infinitum about Lord Maxwell's Last Good Night among other things and taking herself way too seriously. I'd heard about the piano and wasn't looking forward to it, but thought it worked OK. I'd say the four or five tracks I've heard are all fairly impressive. |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: Roberto Date: 27 Nov 03 - 02:05 PM I agree with Richard Bridge about the piano in folk, and in this Cd as well, although I somehow like it in Sir Patrick Spens. I'd like to know something about the tune June Tabor uses to bear this version of Sir Patrick Spens. The liner notes say: tune partly from the Harris mss. (pre-1880). Does somebody know something more? Roberto |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: Richard Bridge Date: 27 Nov 03 - 01:21 PM Lovely material. Great singing. Nice guitar by Martin Simpson. Cello nice in bits. Hate the piano. I hate all pianos in folk (as distinct from jazz, blues, contemporary, etc) |
Subject: RE: New June Tabor CD From: Santa Date: 27 Nov 03 - 08:06 AM Got it. Excellent. At first I played it straight through over dinner and was a bit (not very) iffy...but playing it in shorter stretches in more congenial settings.....oh yes, very good. |
