Losing weight always got rid of my hangover. Either that or wearing pants with a larger waist line that'd let me get the waist up higher and over the offending terrain.

I think that there is more to hangovers than only acetylwhateveritis. Really rotgut liquor, for instance, contains ingredients which add greatly to hangovers. So do certain mixed drinks which use good booze.    The hangovers are different (but still hangovers). I know this from the experience of misspent college days.

To avoid hangovers, be somewhat moderate, don't mix your potable du jour with other libations, and absolutely eschew anything with an excess of sugar like liqueurs and flavored anything -- Tom

Drink good Irish or Scottish whiskey and don't mix it with beer or wine. My favorites are Black Bush or Jameson 1780 special reserve, but most of the good single-malt scotches are fine. I drink it straight up ("When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey...") Next morn is loggy and slow, but no pain or nausea. Or maybe I just don't have enough functional brain cells left that can be harmed.

Based on some war stories I've heard, sheer terror can cure a hangover in seconds.

Then too, death is a surefire cure for problems of this sort, as proven by numerous Russian men who have died in drinking contests.

Pure oxygen. The last school I taught in had a dental assistant program. The resident dentist, who was also an aenesthetist (sp?) let it be known that any suffering faculty member could come to him for a whiff of the pure before 1st period class.

Ru21 sounds like a phony name to me. I think this story's bogus.
My dad, who could drink the entire First Armored Division under the table was in Russia during the war, and said they were world class boozers, without any help from Ru 21.
Donald, my former housemate, is a recovering alcoholic. He taught me to drink a large glass of gingerale before going to bed. It prevents hangovers. Thanks to him, I went to church on New Year's day.

Remember that really cheap East European wine that suddenly hit our (British) markets in the late '80s? Very drinkable, but - oi! - what a hangover.

And cider hangovers have to be the worst!

I find that organic wine, however, leaves me with few regrets.

I once had the misfortune to be in the same hotel as a Shriners Convention. Their strategy seemed to be 'never sober up'.

Stop imbibing two hours before hitting the bunk and drink a couple of glasses of water in the first hour. Of course, even that won't work if you drink toooo much. If you are going on a bender, drink until you hit the bunk and get up within five hours, drown one and have brekky. Above all, pace yourself.

Lots of water between drinks seems to work for me. I've heard that a lot of the symptoms, such as the headaches, are caused by dehydration.

Dehydration a big problem, so water in large quantities a grand, if unthrilling, antidote. An ice-cold beer on arising is also a head-clearer. In my experience the better quality the alcohol, the more tolerable the hangover. Worst hangovers I've ever had were from home brewed beer (still green I suspect), and really cheap tequila.

back before Pepcid (Famotidine) became an over-the-counter drug for acid problems, my doctor gave me a prescription for it as a hangover preventative. (I was getting a headache after 2-3 beers, without getting drunk.)
He explained that the executives at (my doctor knew a couple) were using the drug when they went out to eat and drink as a heartburn preventative, but started noticing that symptoms of hangovers were much reduced. They could still get drunk, but with fewer problems. As he explained it, they had quite a debate over whether to advertise this, and concluded that it would not do offer people 'officially' a way to over-indulge...so they were content to make a fortune on it's standard claims.

I have used it for years, and I think it does help...when I remember to take it BEFORE I drink! I do not drink a lot these days, so I am not the best test case, but......

If you test this, use it sanely...

because of my error in not closing a bracket, you don't see that I was trying to make a link to Merck.com, the company that manufactured Pepcid. Perhaps a clone will fix that.

Here you go - now is it a music thread?

The Wine Song

There are those who like their wine
Because it adds sophistication
To that hearty meal they're serving to their friends.
And there are those who like their wine
Because it helps in the creation
Of that party feel on which so much depends.
And there are those who'd like their wine
To come from eastward-facing chateaux
On the plateaux of Lorraine and all that bunk
But their motives are not mine
And I like lots and lots of wine
And I like it 'cos it makes me drunk.

There are those who take a glass
Because it helps them to relax
They find it helps their social manner to improve
Well, that's a jolly useful scheme
Which I have taken to its logical extreme:
I sometimes get so well-relaxed I can't move
And there's another kind of fellow
Drinks champagne to make him mellow
And he swears by Cliquot, Bollinger and Brut
Well, I tried some Brut meself
I found it on the bathroom shelf
And he was right: it got me mellow as a newt.

You can judge your wine by the quality of the vine,
Or its colour or bouquet or all that junk.
But it all comes back to the falling over factor
And the fact that it gets you drunk.

There are those who like to think
That it's important what you drink
They haven't got an inkling what it's all about
They spent their evenings wasting
Decent drinking time by tasting
Drops of this and that, then spitting it all out.
They pass along the tables
Strewth, they even read the labels
Muttering things like, "What a shame
The cork has shrunk"
Or "fruity nose" or "too much tannin"
When they ought to get a man in
Who appreciates the chance to get drunk.

They waste their time describing
What they ought to be imbibing
Which is wine of course, although you'd never think it.
'Cos they use words like "young but promising, "
"Precocious," "full of fun";
You'd have thought they were going to adopt the stuff
Not drink it.
And at a meal these silly asses
Have a row of empty glasses
A different wine with every dish they eat.
Me, I mix whatever's handy
In a stiff, all-purpose shandy
Which goes very nice with fish or Shredded Wheat.

You can judge your wine by the quality of the vine
Or its colour, or bouquet or all that junk
But it all comes back to the falling over factor
And the fact that it gets you drunk

And there are those who take delight
Pronouncing all the labels right
They roll their r's and do those German glottals.
Me, I couldn't give a monkey's
'Cos the stuff for getting drunk is
On the inside not the outside of the bottles
So if you have a cheese and wine
Invite your friendly Philistine
Call me drunkard, call me sot
Or call me wino. What do I know?
You'll find me in the kitchen
I'll be giggerlin' and twitchin'
Having a sup and throwing up
Across your lino

You can judge your wine by the quality of the vine
Or its colour, or bouquet, if you insist…
But it all comes back to the falling over factor
And the fact that it gets you
Misty-eyed and mellow, gets you
Maudlin, mawkish, miserable and pissed.

Every December I plead for an escort on New Year's eve, so I can get blotto. I see the new year in with friends who live up on top of Mt. Washington. The road down is steep, and slippery, in the winter, with the left turn from hell at the bottom! I do not drive that any way except sober. Of course last year, I was so nervous, I drove halfway home with my lights off. But I did it sober!
