It'll come as no surprise that our own Big Mick... accompanied by his energetic daughter... was spotted at the bus stop of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride, in Detroit, along with many other members of Mick's Union UFCW Local 951. Not unlike the original freedom riders, who rode busses to Washington to demand economic justice for African Americans, Immigrant workers, those who do the work of caring for our children, and our elderly, preparing our food, cleaning our buildings, maintaining our parks and public places, are traveling from all parts of the country to deliver a message in Washigton DC, that they too, need and demand economic justice.
Although I've been an infrequent visitor here for the last couple years, oldtimers here will recall that Mick and I are both Union Activists...who weighed in on many of the issues discussed on this forum... music and politics. And even though we work in the same state, and don't live too far from each other (if 150 miles isn't far) we had only met in the Mudcat Forum, until yesterday...

Slainte, Brother Mick... it was good too see you in action.

From: Mark Clark

Hallelujah I'm Travelin'

I'm paying my fare,
On the Greyhound bus line,
I'm riding the front seat,
To Detroit this time.

Hallelujah I'm travelin'
Hallelujah ain't it fine,
Hallelujah I'm a-travelin'
Down freedom's main line.

Good work, both of you.

From: Amos

MAKIN' TROUBLE
(Tune: Makin' Whoopee)

You get on board,
And you're doing fine,
Until you cross that
City line,
You know the heat's on
'Cuz they got sheets on,
You're making trouble!!

When you ride on
That freedom bus
The Detroit gangs
Will make a fuss
They'll come to greet you
Maybe to beat you
For making trouble!!

And old man Bush
Will try to smile
He'll say "You boys,
Cool off a while.
Turn off your motors,
These folks are voters!
You're making trouble!!"

Mighty proud to know ya, Mick!

A

Historical correction: The original freedom riders rode a bus from Washington DC headed for New Orleans (they never got there) to test the old southern rule that blacks had to ride in back, whites in front. See this page: Freedom Rides.

But this is not meant to detract from current accomplishments. Thanks, Mick, Al, and all your companions.

Mick must still be out Boston way to have missed this... Sweet Honey in the Rock also has a great song that belongs here. I'll try to post it later today.
Hey Mister, I love the way your raising that kid...

Thanks, Tinker. She is a great kid. And she loves taking a stand for things she believes in.....hahhaha, imagine that, eh? Growing up in a family that spent a lot of time in the outdoors hunting and fishing, we were taught by our father that one always left the woods/lake cleaner than what s/he found it. We always, at the end of an outing went looking for things to pickup. I have tried to carry this on in my life, and teach my children the same. We must leave this place one day, and part of the judgement of our time spent here will be based on "Did we leave it better than we found it?". I believe that by raising ones children to take a stand for human dignity, as well as economic and social justice, is part of that. Ciara has a great heart, and I am proud of this 11 year old wonder. And what a Step dancer! This year she took up Oboe.....shit...but it is a short jump from there to the Uilleann Pipes.....hahahahahahah

Yep, finally got to meet Al Cholger. He and 'Spaw would make a helluva start to a basketball team. Brother Al would have to play the Left Guard, of course....... Al has a great reputation around this State for speaking plainly. I like that. Great to finally meet you, Brother. Let's not wait so long before doing it again. And the way the times are, perhaps we will have to man the barricades together, eh?

Yes, Tink, I was indeed flying around the country, and I appreciate your bringing this to my attention. I also have a computer with a fried hard drive. Dell is sending me a new one, so I should be able to get back here a little more frequently very soon.

All the best,

Mick

Hate's what got us needing freedom rides and riders. More of it isn't gonna help--although I do understand how you feel.
