I tried chess for a while but it requires more thought than I am really prepared to give to a game. I did get into war games one time but you need the right teams and enough time for that. For Computer games it's Jezz Ball but I don't play it much because I always seem to be too tired when I sit down at the computer. And you have to be alert to rack up a big score. For Bar games it's darts (or is that a sport?) but I don't play often enough to be much good. For outdoor games it's got to be a treasure hunt. |

Its played with 2 players and without explaining the rules fully, it involves no turn taking, just getting rid of your cards as quickly as possible, and then when one player has no cards left, both players slam their hand down on the smallest pile (usually involves another hand slamming down on top of yours...). I stopped playing years ago when nobody would play against me anymore. i have no idea why. |

If you want a bit of nonsense, you can scarcely do better than get a group of like-minded souls together to play "The Court of the Sacred Dido". All sit cross-legged, straight-backed, poker-faced, on the floor in a circle. One person is nominated (or nominates themselves!) as "The Most Honoured and Ultra-Beautiful/Handsome President", (or whatever other title they wish ) and must always be addressed as such by the others, who must stand and bow when invited by the President to speak. The others are then numbered, by the President, as "Brother 1", "Brother 2", "Sister 1" etc. etc. The Rules of the Court are simple: participants must sit straight, hands on knees, and *keep a straight face* throughout. Participants also keep a look out for others who are not following these rules, and alert the President's attention to this. The President decides what forfeits are to be paid for any misdemeanours. The President needs to be able to keep up the seriousness and formality (Anne Robinson style). Participants soon become very incoherent and silly (with or without alcohol). Another of my favourite anti-corpsing games is "I Love You Honey". One member of group walks up to another and says "I love you, honey, but I just can't smile" and they reply "I love you, too." The first person has to walk in a way which is not their usual walk and talk in a way which is not their usual accent/way of speaking, and the person replying must mimic this, in all cases with both people keeping a totally straight face and looking each other in the eye. Any twitch or quiver and you are out of the game (or pay a forfeit). Hmmmmm, I hear you say. Believe me, if you get a group of people daft enough to play along with this, these games are brilliant. We've spent many an evening laughing helplessly at that one. (I find the thought of yet another game of Trivial Pursuit boring, but once I get started, the knives come out!) Balderdash is a very simple game, but so funny. It's on the lines of "Call my Bluff" in that you have to guess a correct definition of a word or initials, say what happened on a given date, say what a particular named person was famour for, give the basic outline plot of a film title etc. Here it's from amongst those submitted anonymously from the other players. As the real definitions are often a little bit odd, it's good fun. When we were first married there used to be a lot of Risk played in our house, especially when friends came back after an evening in the pub. One year my SO asked for a Mah Jong set for Christmas - we never got beyond trying to build the wall as the rules were in an incomprehensible form, and 25 years later it's still on the shelf. Dominoes, I play 5s and 3s, like they do in the pubs here. I used to be in a darts and dominoes team, and I get quite serious about it. I used to play Backgammon a lot many years ago, but kept losing (money) too much. I like Scrabble too. But I was hopeless at Bridge - I couldn't work out the bidding. After that it just seemed like Whist, and I'm ok at that. When I was a student I kept being dragged in to make up a foursome. I used to hate it. It was the same bloke who used to beat me at Backgammon that used to force me to play Bridge too! I mainly play basic Rummy now. Andrea |

The info is very helpful. I got the rules from a library book and haven't played with anyone who actually knows what they're doing. Kinda like pitching darts in the dark. Mudlark - the game you're referring to is, I belive, "A Question of Scruples" or just "Scruples" for short. I remember playing it, but haven't seen it around in the last decade or so (no more "scruples" in America?? Hmmmmm...) I have played some board/card/solitaire games on the computer but it doesn't compare to sitting across the table from a good friend with something to eat and drink - just good, solid fun. I remember all-night games of "Risk" in college (never did conquer the world - was usually the conquered :-)) and some great matches of Othello (called "Reversi" on the computer for some reason). Play "War" and "Beggar Your Neighbor" (mindless card-flipping) with the kids on occasion. The internet is a great source of rules for games, though... check out card games Might keep ya busy for awhile - gotta love cheap entertainment!! Peace, Bo |

We spend our time and money gathered at massive tournaments where we play all day, grab a meal, play all evening and argue all night. Even golfers think we are a little extreme. I can take or leave cards, but I learned to play Euchre without thinking about it. Just remember to always play your second highest card. You won't win all the time, but you will win regularly, and you don't have to think about it. It works the same with Oh Hell, which is Euchre with a full deck. |

Bat'n'ball games had a phase in the 80s and early 90s, with the classic unsurpassed version being Arkanoid 2 (sequel to the earlier Arkanoid). I love Mah Jongg - the proper one, not the crappy solitaire game (which only exists on PCs AFAIK, not as a RL game). Besides it being a great game, and allowing strategic planning like going for a more risky hand returning more points, there's also the effect of the tiles. It's like playing a game using wooden wind chimes - the clicking sound is kind of soothing - and the feel of the tiles is much nicer than cards. I never used to play much, but Yahoo now have an online Mah Jongg game which is good. It can't beat the feel of actual tiles in your hand though. :-) Backgammon's fun too, but I don't play much of that. I win a lot at Monopoly (years of practise when I was younger :-) but it's kind of boring. On an "odd-ball" theme, my wife got me a card-based game called "Citadels" last year, where the idea is to build your city first. Once you've got the hang of how to play (which doesn't take long), it's really good fun, and you can be reassuringly nasty to your fellow players (war and assassination are options! :-) Recommended for something to try at Xmas instead of the old standards. Board games: Scrabble, Pictionary...and there was game in the early 90's that posed ethical questions, then you had to decide on what side your partner would come down, then defend it if partner disagreed...then up to other players to decide who was "right" or most truthful, or whatever. Cant remember the name but it made for some VERY interesting evenings! |

S/He "kills" by a wink and the victim silently counts to thirty and then pins or tapes the piece of paper as you would a name tag and announces that they are dead. If you catch or suspect the murderer, you accuse that person. If you are wrong, both you and the person accused have to don the piece of paper. Sounds childish, but it WAS fun. |

I've not played Gin Rummy in a long time, but Mah Jongg is an extended version (collecting sets of matching tiles or sequences), although the presence of a 'pack' of 144 tiles (136 if not using seasons/flowers) gives a greater variety. In both Gin & Mah Jongg, much of the strategy is in choosing what you will collect, but knowing when to change your objectives. Watching your opponents discards gives you two important pieces of information. 1,what they are not collecting (safe discards from your hand), 2 what they are not collecting & amy be expected to discard more of the same. Dominoes is a different beast altogether. Like cards, there are numerous games, but the most common is probably the simple "Block-em" type game played by two or more. In this each player starts with the same number of tiles, and attempts to play one tile each turn, exhausting his hand first. If a player cannot make a valid move (by matching a tile in his hand to one end of the current chain) he either passes (misses his turn) or passes and picks up an additional tile. Strategy starts whenever you have a choice of tiles to play. Deliberately playing a tile which leaves both ends showing the same number is usually a good move and it takes very little to check its likely effect. With a 'standard' set of dominoes there are 28 tiles numbered Double blank; Blank One; Blank Two - Five Six; Double Six. Players are quick to spot that a game can be blocked completely if a tile is played making the two ends equal after all other of those tiles have been played. Then it is a matter of how you're scoring. If by remaining pips (i.e Double Blank=0; Double Six=12; Six Five=11)then it's worth blocking the game if your remaining tiles are low, but not if you're still holding high tiles. By a similar method, if you start with (say) several fours, you will be looking for a chance to get fours at both ends. This will force others to pass, while you know you will be able to play the next round. I could go on, but this is just some basics Nigel |

Everyone writes down a possible meaning, including the person who originally looked it up, and then everyone guesses which one is the real one. Only things needed are a dictionary, pencils and paper and enquiring minds! a good chance to improve vocabulary, too. I used to love monopoly, but when i realized it encouraged development, ammassing huge amounts of property and charging rent in increasing amounts, decided it was going a direction i did not care for. I have not much cared for Monoploy since discoveriny Anti-Monopoly. (sub titled: the bust the trust game) It is hard to obtain, though due to copyright issues. |

I most enjoy games that don't require that people feel like loosers. I find computer action games really boring too. The readme says it's a clone of something called Archazoid, I think. There's another computer game called Kolf, like miniature golf using the arrow keys to aim. Except for the difficulty in controling how hard you hit the ball, it's quite good. |
