Subject: Lyr Req: Papa Won't You Make Me a Brand New Pair
From: Janie
Date: 01 Oct 03 - 05:57 PM

I am looking for the lyrics of this song. I'm not sure I have the title right--couldn't find anything with DT, Forum or Google searches. I don't know who wrote it. I do know Robin & Linda Williams recorded it but don't recall which album. The Chorus is something like:

Papa won't you make me a brand new pair
of red dancing shoes
Make them like the ones that only you know how to (choose?)
Make 'em strong, make 'em (bright?)
You can make 'em just right
Then she'll dance with me all night.
Papa won't you make me a brand new pair of shoes

Thanks,

Janie

I might have my pronouns wrong--maybe it should be "her" instead of "me", but still no luck searching with this change in words.

The song is "Red Dancing Shoes," written by Peter Ostroushko. It has been recorded by the Middle Spunk Creek Boys on "No One Else"; by Robin and Linda Williams (with Peter Ostroushko) on "Dixie Highway Sign"; and by Peter Ostroushko on "Down the Streets of My Old Neighborhood" (the same album that has the fine song "B-O-R-S-C-H-T").

Sorry, I couldn't find any sound samples or lyrics.

I believe there are archived programs of "A Prairie Home Companion" available somewhere on the net; and I'd bet "Red Dancing Shoes" is in there somewhere.

Thanks Jim. Knowing the real title and who wrote it may help me--

I still haven't found anything from on-line searches, even with the new and accurate information. Maybe some one here knows it.

I found the Prairie Home Companion web site, and I found that they do have a lot of archived programs and an excellent search engine, but I still haven't found "Red Dancing Shoes."

However, I have bookmarked that search site for future use.

Great song that I haven't done in years. Peter said the song was a tribute to his father, who was a shoemaker. There was also a great recording by Peter's old group, the New Prairie Ramblers (?).

I've got the words at home and will try to type them in over the weekend-
I think the chorus is:

Papa won't you make me a brand new pair of red dancing shoes
Make them like the ones that only you know how to do
Make 'em strong, make 'em light
You can make 'em just right
Then she'll dance with me all night.
Papa won't you make me a brand new pair of shoes

And one verse - I think - is

Now where's that girl with the pretty dress on
She stole my heart, and now she's gone
But that's alright, 'cause I'll dream of her tonight
And someday in our heavenly home,
They'll hold a dance and you know I'll be going
Just to see that girl and dance with her one more time

Here it is - some changes from prior post - I guess if could remember lyrics I would have gone on the road! I used to do it in F.

(1)Oh, how are you my (4)pretty little (1)miss
If you (5)show me a smile, I'll (1)show you a kiss
(4)Then I'm gonna tell you just exactly what I'm gonna (1)do (5)
If you (1)put on a dress that will (4)make you look fine
Get some (5)colored ribbons, tie your (1)hair behind
(4) We're going dancing and I (5)want to make you fell real (1)good

cho--
(1)Oh, Papa won't you make her a (4)brand new pair of red dancing (1)shoes
(5)Make them with the love that only (4)you know how to (1)do
Make 'em soft, make 'em light
You can (4)make 'em just (1)right
(5)Then she'll dance with (1)me all night.
(4)Papa won't you make her a (5)brand new pair of (1)shoes

Then I grabbed that girl and I held her tight
Made me feel everything was right
I felt her heart, it was beating close to mine
Then I stole a little kiss and I was feeling fine
Pretty little eyes, oh how they did shine
I could hardly wait 'til they played the next song or two

Now where's that girl with the pretty dress on
She stole my heart, and now she's gone
But that's alright, 'cause I'll dream of her tonight
And someday in our heavenly home,
They'll hold a dance and you know where I'll go
I'll go to see that girl, just to dance with her once again

I hope that someday Peter may be able to release a cd of some of his great work on PHC. He is a tremendous musician. I even liked the Mando-Boys and hope they too may be back some day.
You're welcome, Chris

Used to listen to A Prairie Home Companion all the time years ago. Being from central Minnesota I could relate to a number of the stories and people. Loved this song. Off and on I would try to find it, now the internet has put me onto it again. Am bookmarking this page and will copy the lyrics down, pull out my guitar and play one of the most favorite songs that I know of. Loved to hear Peter do it on Prairie Home Companion. Have been trying to find episodes with him playing it on the show. Although this post looks like it is from 2003, I wanted to add something to it and to give a very heartfelt thanks. Best Regards, Don in Lugoff, SC
